This season I have noticed a second whistle while the basketball is being put into play. The first whistle as the ref hands the ball to the out of bounds player to throw it in. Then there is a second whistle. At first I thought I was hearing the first whistle againdelayed over the radio. Then it occurred to me the second whistle was being blown when the inbounds player received the ball. I've never noticed this before. Is this something new, or is my hearing getting better with age? :?

I'm checking it out, but I can't imagine a second whistle when the ball is first touched in bounds. The whistle is used to signal the official time to stop the clock, and this would go against everything the whistle is used for, because this would be a signal to start the clock. That has always been the raised hand brought down in a chopping manner.

That's what I was thinking. That second whistle would just make everybody stop. :?

Not when the ball is first touched in bounds, when it is first touched out of bounds after being served by the ref. Whistle blows....5 seconds to inbound the ball.....
Not sure.....

It was certainly confusing to me. :? Of course, I confuse easily. :) I really thought I had to be mistaken about the second whistle, so I asked the people sitting around me if they were hearing it. This was at the Northern State game. They all said they were hearing it and were puzzled. I wasn't at the Georgetown game, so can't say for sure about that one. I'm pretty sure we weren't all imagining it. We were only drinking water. :D

Well, I am pleased to say that I solved this mystery tonight. The delay on the radio was so bad thatI (we) were hearing the inbound whistle again on the radio.

It sure is hard to type while I'm rolling on the floor. ;)
Well, I'm glad that issue was solved because it had me stumped. The mistake is actually understandable, though somewhat humorous all the same.

When the second whistle blows, confiscate the whistle from the dork in the crowd......

I'm sure glad this issue was solved, because I went an officials meeting and asked 2 NCAA ref's about the second whistle. They looked at me like I was making it up and both asked me why would they blow a whistle starting the clock. They both have worked a couple of games and neither had heard of this. Funny bleedbluelady, and it sure had me puzzled.
