I was doing color commentary for a game on the radio and I missed a call. Here's the situation: It was 3rd and 20 something for the offense. They run a play and do not get the first down. After the play is over there is a personal foul penalty on the defense. I was under the impression that it was an automatic first down. Instead they moved the ball up 15 yards and called it 4th and 4 and the offense had to punt it away. Why didn't the personal foul result in an automatic first down like it does in college and pro ball?

I checked with and official, and here's what he told me. A flagrant personal foul of course would involve an ejection, roughing the passer, or kicker would result in an automatic first down in HS. Any other personal foul, a late hit, or something like that would not.
