Lexington Catholic’s athletics program faces penalties for violating Kentucky High School Athletic Association rules governing financial aid to student-athletes.

The KHSAA sent Lexington Catholic a letter this week detailing the sanctions, which include a hefty fine, forfeiture of games, a reduction in the number of games the Knights can play next year, and probation.

Lexington Catholic has 15 days to file an appeal, but principal Sally Stevens said today that the school probably won’t appeal.

Neither the KHSAA nor Lexington Catholic would reveal the specifics of the penalties, but Stevens confirmed that the fine is “close” to $30,000 and that the Knights’ baseball and football teams would see a reduction in their schedules.

Stevens said coaches had nothing to do with the violations, which occurred in the administration’s handling and supervision of financial assistance to students.

Stevens said the school needs time to review the sanctions before commenting further.

Lexington Catholic issued a statement that the school’s “mission has everything to do with helping our … families when they encounter hardship. … It has nothing to do with influencing students to play athletics.”

“In fact, Lexington Catholic provides this same financial aid to families of non-athletes as well.”

The statement concluded: “If those actions conflicted with a provision of the KHSAA, it was inadvertent and the school apologizes for it. Nevertheless, Lexington Catholic takes Commissioner (Brigid) DeVries’ ruling very seriously and has already implemented procedures at the school to assure strict compliance with the bylaws of the KHSAA.”

I can't stand Lex. Cath. They're recruiting cheaters most definitely. For once, I hope Louisville beats Lexington. (Highlands v Cath in football) That has NOTHING at all to do w/ UK though and should be in the prep sports forum.

Rick, what exactly does this have to do with UK?

It would be like one of us posting a thread that, say, Ballard High School was caught cheating and linking it to U of L.

I know you're anti-UK, but that one has me baffled. Why did you even bother? Just because a high school is in Lexington, UK is at fault by simply being in the same city?

Ohhhh I get it. He's stereotyping. Better yet, he's putting 2 and 2 together (figuratively speaking...he's probably not that smart in real life).

He's saying that because Lex Cath got caught cheating, and UK got caught cheating back in the day (the basketball program), that everyone in the city of Lexington cheats.

That's asinine. It would be like me saying that because U of L puts up billboards billing its town as "the greatest sports town in america," and because the city of Louisville recently incorporated all of Jefferson County and pathetically calls itself the 16th largest city in America, both of which are quite laughable when you get down to it (this run-on sentence isn't finished yet), that inferiority complexes are quite commonplace in Louisville, and not just among U of L fans.

See how that works?

http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/27/272218.jpgBecause Lex Cath has 20 days, I think, to appeal the KHSAA decision. Then the appeal has to be heard and that could still take some time. The penalties most likely won't affect them this year.

Man I live down the road from Catholic, and I hate them. This is over due. No big shocker here.

The girl in that picture is the only good thing to ever come out of U of L. Bravo.
