Lexington Catholic’s athletics program faces penalties for violating Kentucky High School Athletic Association rules governing financial aid to student-athletes.
The KHSAA sent Lexington Catholic a letter this week detailing the sanctions, which include a hefty fine, forfeiture of games, a reduction in the number of games the Knights can play next year, and probation.
Lexington Catholic has 15 days to file an appeal, but principal Sally Stevens said today that the school probably won’t appeal.
Neither the KHSAA nor Lexington Catholic would reveal the specifics of the penalties, but Stevens confirmed that the fine is “close” to $30,000 and that the Knights’ baseball and football teams would see a reduction in their schedules.
Stevens said coaches had nothing to do with the violations, which occurred in the administration’s handling and supervision of financial assistance to students.
Stevens said the school needs time to review the sanctions before commenting further.
Lexington Catholic issued a statement that the school’s “mission has everything to do with helping our … families when they encounter hardship. … It has nothing to do with influencing students to play athletics.”
“In fact, Lexington Catholic provides this same financial aid to families of non-athletes as well.”
The statement concluded: “If those actions conflicted with a provision of the KHSAA, it was inadvertent and the school apologizes for it. Nevertheless, Lexington Catholic takes Commissioner (Brigid) DeVries’ ruling very seriously and has already implemented procedures at the school to assure strict compliance with the bylaws of the KHSAA.”
