I was watching highlights of the 98 Duke game today and this popped into my head.
Mu Evans didn't have the high rankings, etc. But he was one of those players that gave his all every minute that he was on the court.

I have said it before, Mu Evans is the only player that I can recall that was Chuck's equal. One who would sacrifice his body and gave everything he had for the glory of the TEAM. We need a lot of that this year. I don't think we win it all in '98 without Mu.

One of the first names that pops in my head is Dale Brown. That guy played D like Hawk andgave ChuckHayes effort.

Gerald Fitch- One of the best combinations of offense and defense on a UK roster.

Anthony Eppes. Not the most talented point guard ever, but nobody could knock him from the starting spot. He was a winner. He proved it in HS and it continued at UK. You didn't hear a lot about him because he surrounded by so much talent, but Kentucky would not have been nearly as good without him.
Also, Charles Hurt and Freddy Cowan. They were the Chuck Hayes of their era.

:cool:Going back to the Coach Rupp days, Larry Steele...what a great hustler and team player...hit the wing shot and filled the lane on the fast break.

Saul Smith,....not that his name belongs in the same sentence with Heshimu Evans, but he was probably the most disrespected player that I remember. He wasn't the best player we ever had, but most of the flack he caught was simply because he was Tubby's son. I can remember many players who were not nearly as good as he was, but were not trashed by the fans as much as he was.

Larry Stamper.....if his shirt-tail was out, the rebound was his. Unsung
Fred Cowen.....smooth as silk. Underrated.
Saul Smith...maybe took more unnecessary crap than anyone anddidn't deserve it since being here was not his fault. Played harder than anyone.
Roger Harden.....tough PG that played tough as well.
Tom Parker....as good with the lefty shot as Grevey or the Goose but seems to have been forgotten.

Marquis Estill, Known his family for years. An amazing 3 point shot for a big man. Was a shame that he wasnt given a chance to shoot it more at U.K. He had that skill was just never untilized.:wildcatface

Erik Daniels. Any Tubby Smith offense that flowed with efficiency had "E" to thank.

:thumbup:thumbup Daniels is my all-time favorite college basketball player. He was so much fun to watch play. He'd pull some move out of the 1970's on someone, usually an overly exaggerated ball-fake followed by an up-and-under (or, my personal favorite, the ol' "watch what I'm doing with this hand...ooops!...the ball is NOT in that hand! It's in my other one....sucker! Two points!"), then he'd laugh on his way back down the floor. Loved it!

I can't argue, nor would I dare, with any of the names mentioned. A couple more to throw out are Mark Pope, Tony Delk, and Ed Davender. Also, if Dale Brown doesn't get injured we cut the nets down without question that year. Mash and Travis were bigtime players too. I will never forget that James Lee power dunk in that lsu player's face. It was awesome with a capital A! Also, as I type I think that Derek Anderson was one of the best players to ever wear the colors and Arizoina goes down in flames if the slick one lets him play. Bummer. I don't think I will ever forgive coach p for that decision. Not to expound too much but if you are so worried about his pro career why have him practicing wide open leading up to the game and telling everyone he is looking the best of any of the players? Oh well..I guess the pain of what should have been is still there lurking under the surface.

Dan Issel
I know he is a UK legend, but I think that a lot of todays kids have no idea what a true superstar is; this is why they called the 6-8, 210lb Issel "The Horse". The boy carried his team in both points and rebounds. Even though he wasdouble and tripple teamed, he still dominated.
24 times in UK history, a player has scored 40+ points. Only one player has done so more than 2 times.
Dan Issel recorded 9 games of 40+ including 4 of the top 6 highest scores and of course he is the all time highest single game scorer with 53pts.
Dan averaged almost 34pts per game as a Junior before turning pro, and leads UK all time in both scoring and rebounding, even though he played just 3 seasons.
Scored 27,482 pts in his combined ABA/NBA career.

Issel averaged almost 34 as a Senior. The reason he only played 3 years is that Freshmen weren't allowed to play at that time.

:cool:Since I had the pleasure toseeboth Dan and Louie Dampier play while a UK student here is a trivia question most people outside of Kentucky never answer correctly: Who are the two leading scorers in American Basketball Association (ABA) history: 1...Louie, Louie Dampier (one of my three favorite Cats) and 2. Dan Issel.

Dicky Beal was a favorite of mine. He certainly had the respect of our two-year-old son. He would stay up to halftime of the delayed broadcasts, thinking that the game was over, all the while rooting for his favorite player, RICKY Beal. :ggrin:Thanks for the memory. :)

Mu Evans and Cameron Mills.....to me without either of those guys we don't win it all in 98'. I remember a sports call-in show ( which aired a few hours before that game), which stated the Evans had to be "the X factor" in that game, and sure enough he was.
And Mills, I have been over this a thousand times, but he gave hope to every 12 year old boy, that ever shot hoops in the driveway or backyard. One of the things that angered me was a couple years ago at the state fair, Cam was there to sign autographs, but noone was there, just me. I thought that it was the ultimate disrespect to a ky kid that gave his all, and in the end, brought us an NCAA title.:(

You are so right, delkfor3. By the way, if I had been at that state fair, I most certainly would have been there with you. I so respected Cameron, both on and off the court, and still do. Sad (and embarrassing, as Spanish Moss just said). :(

Thanks for those nice comments about Cameron, poodoo. As a parent I know I would be proud to call him my son. This young man is a model as to what it means to play basketball for the University of Kentucky. He has a championship ring and was never a problem, not for a minute. You have to love and respect someone like Cam.
Yep, Cameron Mills. I wondered about the lack of a crowd at the State Fair also. My son and I were there, bought a couple of posters, and had Cam sign them. He also happily posed with my son for a few pictures. I run into him occasionally at Frisch's on Harrodsburg Road.

Three from back in the day....
Adrian "Odie" Smith. Solid as a collegian, solid as a pro. Same for Larry Steele.
And Ted Deeken was a very good player who was part of a one-two punch with Cotton Nash. He would have been a star, had he not played in Nash's shadow.

Well-said, Spanish Moss. Every UK basketball fan should indeed love and respect Cameron Mills. Also, unfortunately, sometimes it's only the "stars" who are remembered and whose autographs are wanted by the fans. :(Whatdelkfor3 shared shows that Cameronshoulddefinitely be included in this thread's discussion.
