I seem to recall that during the early Pitino years, UNC actually was leading UK in all-time wins. Of course, they were also using archeologists to dig up prehistoric, non-recorded wins, something we later retaliated with ourselves. But the UK program was "down" during the end of Sutton and beginning of Pitino regimes, soI assume that is when UNC briefly led. Can anyone tell me how long UNC held the record for most wins? I think it may have flip-flopped a few times before UK took over for good as Pitino rebuilt the program. Just wondering. Thanks.

Kentucky's record: Wins 1,909 (103 seasons)
Losses 584
Ties 1
Carolina's record: Wins 1,863 (96 seasons)
Losses 681
For many years North Carolina would play a lot more games than UK. In fact the ACC tournament was being played for years and years before the SEC started one in the late 1970's. The SEC had discontinued their's decades earlier because Kentucky won all of them. By playing more games they piled up victories.
Our winning percentage is much greater and when we started playing as many games as North Carolina we took the lead back. I think as long as we play the same amount of games we will hold the lead. Their lead as "team with the most victories" was short lived. They have never been the winningest team when you look at winning percentage.
I don't know the exact years they led us in total victories but when Pitino came on board we started playing more games and took it back.

In today's Courier-Journal, top five list.
Kentucky 1,909
North Caroline 1,863
Kansas 1,850
Duke 1,770
Saint John's 1,680I remember back when Kentucky went on probation. North Carolinatremulously made ground. It was single digits maybe even lead for UNC. Then UNC compile 20 loss season and Kentucky went to championships. This exstend lead back to postion. This does not change much year to year, of course; overten yearsonehas acknowledgement.
The below graph shows the region where UNC overtook UK. The game UK regained the lead was the Wake Forest game against Tim Duncan. I believe Billy Packer claimed that UK regained the lead back from UNC in about a year or so, but it took longer than that.

As far as 'digging' for victories, I talk about this a little on the page below.

Wow, I am impressed! Thanks for the graph, it is exactly what I was looking for. And thanks to the other posters who pointed out that even though UNC had the most victories for a short time, they still didn't have the best winning percentage. Again, thanks to all who responded!
