You don't have to involve the lower tier bowls and thereby deny some teams the opportunity to participate in a bowl.

It could be very simple really. First you have to remove the human factor out by removing the opinion polls from the BCS computation. You then pair the top 8 teams and have them play the weekend of December 16 (or two weeks after the league championship games). These games would kick off the bowl season. You call these ‘play in’ games and you pit 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5 as shown above. The games are played at the higher ranked team’s home field. Then the losers of these four games play each other in two of the BCS games and the winners play each other in two more BCS games all on the same weekend as they are currently. The two winners of the winners games would play in the final (5th) BCS game one week later. Voila’ national champion and the bowls stay intact.
