Blown tire. Freshman tailback C.J. Spiller said his sprained right ankle could keep him sidelined for the bowl game.
Spiller, who suffered the injury during the final offensive drive of the USC loss, said he tried running Monday but felt pain comparable to what he experienced when first injuring the ankle.
He wore a walking boot until Thursday. Spiller said team doctors expect him to be OK in time for the bowl.
Consequently, coach Tommy Bowden said he will not use youngsters against Kentucky with an eye toward the future, but senior tailback Reggie Merriweather’s role could expand.
“That might be the exception to where there’s a plan to get a guy more work because there’s not a lot of separation between him and the others,” Bowden said. “Playing him, to me, wouldn’t necessarily jeopardize trying to win the game
