Offensive coordinator Al Borges grew up watching Stanford football. Now he wants to be the program's figurehead.
Borges said Wednesday that he's ready to become a head coach, and wants to interview for the Cardinal's vacant position. Still, he added there's no hurry to leave Auburn. Only certain jobs appeal to him. Stanford is one of them.
"I was in the Pac-10 Conference for a long time and everybody knows that's home for me," said Borges, who has coached at Cal and UCLA. "It's a job I'd love to have. With that said, it's not like I'm itching to get out of here. I know how good I have it."
Coach Walt Harris was fired on Monday after only two seasons with Stanford. The Cardinal finished 1-11 this year, and Harris' disciplinarian approach drew criticism throughout his brief tenure.
Representatives from the Palo Alto, Calif., school have not contacted Borges or his agent, Barry Terranova, to gauge interest. The school reportedly is considering Tennessee Titans assistant coach Norm Chow, Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach, Tulsa head coach Steve Kragthorpe, UCLA defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker and San Diego University head coach Jim Harbaugh.
