View Full Version : Commonwealth Renovations

If Commonwealth was to undergo renovations, what would you like to see done?

I myself would like to see the aluminum bleachers start getting replaced with actual seats similar to what PJ has at least in the donor areas and expanding to the other season ticket areas.

A large Jumbotron would be nice too.

What are your ideas??

Mine would be a relatively inexpensive and easy suggestion:

Put some blue paint on it!

The outside is almost all gray, beige and cream. The inside is mostly gray.

Use The Swamp as an example and make the place look like the home of a team that wears blue.

Paint the outside (at least the currently cream and beige girders and panels) UK blue, and replace a lot of the gray paint (especially on the walls and steps) with UK blue.

Those parts that aren't painted blue: make them white.

Gray is not one of UK's colors. Neither is cream nor beige. Painting UK's football stadium with those colors is akin to when they had those orange seats in Rupp Arena.

The cheerleaders don't get the crowd to shout "gray" and "cream"; the stadium should be painted to match the cheers and the uniforms and what the fans should be wearing.

I agree. Dip that popsickle in blue paint. Put in Smurf Turf. Heck, even make the goalposts blue.

I found the seats in the Pizza Pit to be very uncomfortable when we were there to watch the State Championship Football games. I am not a tall person but my knees were crowded up against the seats in front of us. I am quite fond of my bleacher seat. I like to stand up on it and scream my lungs out for the Cats!

GO BIG BLUE!!!

More Blue Paint.

A new sound system please!!!! At the minimum, speakers in the east end zone.

Those seats at PJCS STINK!!!!! I had to corkscrew myself into the seats to keep from hitting my arms as I sat down. I'm a pretty average build, but those seats were tight even for me.

1. Need lots and lots of blue paint in that place.

2. New sound system "surround sound" please. Why does only one end of the stadium have speakers? Stupid... Let's spread some speakers around and pump in some noise!

3. New jumbo trons to accompany the new sound system.

4. A NEW BAND! OUr band sucks! Okay, okay, I know that they are not part of the stadium per say... but come on!

5. TAKE C.M. Newtons name off the freaking field!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

I am a big fan/follower of new stadiums and stadium renovations.....I've always wondered what could be done to Commonwealth Stadium to make it better. I can't believe they land locked it with the upperlevels at only 70,000 capacity, leaving no room to expand. I would like to see those sky boxes redone...They kinda look like someone pulled their trailer home up behind the endzones and set up shop... My ultimate stadium is one that accomplishes 3 things..... 1. college size seating capacity (110,000 +).... 2 NFL luxury boxes and amenities.......3. Room to breathe and relax in your seat.... That's what their trying to accomplish with the big house in michigan right now... can't believe ppl are opposing it.... http://www.savethebighouse.com/ ............. I'd also like to see a rectractable roof over commonwealth so that the games aren't freezing cold but this would be too expensive and I want the UKAA to save money for the eventual building of RUPPII across from Commonwealth.... Btw I heard UKAA approved something like $30 mil for stadium renovations....anyone else hear that?....thats enough to build a AAA baseball park!

What I'd like to see be done would be a huge undertaking. I would like to see the outside of the stadium bricked so that it looks like a stadium instead of an oversized high school bleachers.

I want to see Commonwealth Stadium look like a royal blue and white Taj Mahal when I am driving up to the stadium that is also lacking in the name CM Newton Field. Make it Dodge City stadium for all I care just lose the CM part. Also put in some wide Blue and white stadium seats with backs, that also have a straight and strong bottom for my fat butt and for me and others when we want to climb up on them and jump up and down while screaming at the top of our lungs. (I have never left the stadium not hoarse) Give me the best jumbotron screen and sound system money can buy and let me pick the playlist. Something that will get the excessive hair on the back of my neck standing on their ends and chills running up and down my spine while my mind spins into a frenzy of Royal Kentucky Blue! Then the energy from the stands transcends unto the playing field and we literally kick the sh#! out of the opposition. WOW! Fired up you say? You better Catdaddy believe it!!!!!!! Woo oooo! C.A.T.S. Good suggestions, especially taking down C.M.'s name. That was the worst move the university has made in 100 years. Please take it down Board of Trustees.

I love the new sound stystem and the blue and white decor suggestions. We also need to come up with something that makes a statement , something to identify UK football. Georgia has the bulldog, UGA, the Gators have the Gator "Chomp", the Vols have Smokey and Rocky Top, LSU has the Golden Girls and FSU has the Cowgirls. You get the idea. What can UK come up with that puts a signature on our program.

The addition of a lotmore Blue and the best JomBoTron and sound system money can buy need to happen as soon as possible.

Quadruple the number of dance team girls, enough to ring the entire stadium.Quadruple the size of the band. Get a band director that can put the band on the map. Name them all the WildCat Thoroughbreds and make them the focus of every second of down time before game, during game and post game.

Now you are getting somewhere. Put the focus on the beautiful girls of the bluegrass. Form a college football marching band that you can hear all the way to Frankfort. College football needs color and pagentry. All great programs have it. It may take spending a little money but the benefits will make money and UK can move up the ladder.

Excitement breeds winning and winning breeds championships.

Blue endzones. Look at the synthetic surface practice fields that have blue endzones and tell me that doesn't look 10x better.
Paint the UK logo at midfield blue with a white outline, not just a white logo.
Install synthetic grass, like atMichigan, Louisville, Ole Miss, and the Georgia Dome.
Do SOMETHING about the ugly astroturf sidelines
Move the visitors section to the other side of the stadium so they can't be seen on TV (or, when there's a bad opponent like UL-Monroe, there won't be a huge empty pocket of the stadium plainly visible on TV).
Huge, widescreen, HD video board on both ends
Install the seatbacks for everyone, not just the people who pay an extra $30.
Put some SEC championship flags up (well, I guess we'll have to earn those; it would look pretty ridiculous to put up totally false banners like "1995 SEC Champs")

I love the suggestions of more blue. The main thing I would like changed is the band and also "ANOTHER FIRST DOWNKENTUCKY!!!!". I hate that and it gives the impression that we get very few first downs. I know those aren't the stadium but I wish they would change. I would also like to see more people in the stadium next year.

Jordan- The stadium is not as "landlocked" in terms of renovatingas you may think. The Commonwealth renovation had three phases, and obviously these phases would be constructed as ticket demand required it to be completed.

Phase 1-Already completed. Endzones bowled in, luxury suites added. Capacity increased from 57,000 to the current 68,000.

Phase 2- Adds a second level of bleachers above the luxury suites. Would require reconfiguration of the current scoreboards. Would raise total capacity to around 80,000.

Phase 3-Adds a third level to the sideline seats bringing the capacity to the 100,000 -105,000 range.

I would love to see Phase 2 implemented as soon as necessary, but with the decline in attendance this year, you will be hard pressed to find any logical reason at this point to do. Now if we can sustain some success over the next few years, then this may become a possiblity again. Keep in mind, these renovations were suggested when Mumme was here and Tim Couch was wowing us with his talents.

While I've been a fan of Kentucky sports my whole life, I've only recently started to get into the inner workings of the school. (I watch the games on tv, but didn't care about athletics directors and stuff like that) so I'm a bit confused.

What is wrong with CM Newton? I seriously don't know. I know nothing about him.

Also, this year i went to 4 games, and none of them were full. So why would adding 40,000 seats improve things?

I should note that I was shocked at the lack of full attendance, considering in the past every game i went to was full.

When the field was christened CM Newton field, he was the outgoing AD at Kentucky. He had been responsible for hiring Pitino and Mumme. He did great things for UK Athletics.

The problem is that he was a BASKETBALL player in his days at UK. Football diehards like us don't care to have a basketball player's name on the field. It gives the impression that we are always going to be a basketball school.

Perhaps most important, there is a former coach who should ahve had the field named after him: Jerry Claiborne.

you can't expect Mitch to make all these changes at once...that would mean raising the ticket prices yet again--it is already going up next yea if I remember correctly--and cause even more of a LOD uproar.

Mitch will make the necessary changes in time...the only one he can't make is the removal of CM's name as I'm sure the board has the final say in that. Perhaps we could remove it from the football field and give CM the last stall in each of the bathrooms.

Damn stright! A few years ago, I attended a game at The Citadel. Their rest rooms were a large square, with a brick tile trough on the floor around 2 walls to pee in. About 5 feet off the floor, there was a galvanized water line with little holes drilled in it that had anicestream of water coming out (kind of what you have in football practice to grab a drink from)to keep the urine moving towards the drains. I was standing next to this well dressed (obviously a Citadel grad) older gentleman as we were draining our radiators, and just being the friendly guy I am, I remarked...."This is really nice....a man can come in here, take a leak, worsh (wash) his hands, and get a drink all without taking a step." I don't know what he thought about it, but he looked at me like I was speaking in Chineese and moved away quickly....

I don't think that's true at all. I think that most people put the blame for UK's troubles at CM's lack of institutional control. He apparently kept the "good ol' boy" network to the point that he was still getting "consulting" fees well into his retirement.

Also, it was CM who recommended Larry "Poison" Ivy for the position.

I don't know that I'd expand until we sell out more frequently. I would think it looks better to recruits to play to a packed house of 67k rather than a stadium with a capacity of 86k but 20k empty seats. JMO.

Speaking of petered out & troughs, I recall a HS game I attended at Dixie Heights 6-8 years ago. The entrance to the johns is on the right end of the long side of the building, so you must turn left as you enter. When you turn left, there's a 25' long trough against the wall you just came through the door of. Gazing down the length of the trough is not a pretty sight.

Anyways, I was in line to said trough. In bops this lady who was concentrated on talking to her friends ouside vs. looking where she was "headed". She takes one look down the trough at about a dozen hoses being emptied & screams & runs out. LMAO then & now.

After seeing this I'm glad to see I was wrong. I figured with the upper levels already intact that it would be too much too renovate the stadium. I really hope UK will go through with their plans to turn Commonwealth into a top 10 venue...btw...I hate to hear you won't be making it to the bowl game..Can't believe all of the homegame tailgates are already over....seems like the season just started....Hopefully, I'll be able to make it to some next year... Thanks for all of your work at the tailgate ...those tents sure kept the area warm the past few games.

Ha! Nah, the really old school Wildcat, He means.

I'm more for putting the block K back at midfield.

"I remember concrete gutters, not troughs - sorta like the Clemson description."

Come to Starkville today and you can see exactly what McLean Stadium used to have.

I came. I saw. I peed. Reminded me of the troughs in my grandfather's dairy barn back in the day.

The ability to keep a thread like this alive is just one more thing that separates us guys from them gals.

UK has its own version of the Golden Girls also - they control about half the season tickets in the lower level of Rupp . . . .

My father and I have gone to UK Football games all my life. . . We sit in section 111 (his Dad had tickets at old Stoll Field before there was a Commonwealth). At any rate, as a very excitable football fan, I have often bemoaned the lack of passionate support for our team on Saturdays from some of our *ahem* less mobile fans. While I think it is a much bigger problem at Rupp, it has been at Commonwealth, as well. I hate to say it, but I think the pre-season ticket purge (which I believe is more about price thanMark Story, John Clay, and the Athletic Dept.are willing to admit) may turn out to be a good thing for the atmosphere of Commonwealth. I know that 111 looks and feels quite a bit younger and more vocal. However, Mitch is really putting the squeeze on. . . Between ticket prices & K-Fund "contributions" I have had to talk Dad out of giving up his tickets the past few years. Luckily, I can go halfsies with him.

At any rate, my wish list:

1) Backs for the bleachers (don't have to be full seats, just throw some backs on those bleachers.

2) More blue.

3) More student seats.

Back in old Stoll Field, the urination system was, as previously described, a concrete stream in a dark, dank, cold section under the stands. A few rusted, but handy pipes traversed the low ceiling and kept many a drunk from falling headfirst into the stream.

One cold afternoon, one particularly drunk fellow stumbled in, humming something like the fight song to himself, grabbed a pipe with his left hand and grabbed the end of his BELT with his right. He then pointed the belt at the stream and proceeded to pee.

Finished, he shook the end of the belt, slid it back into the loop and happily headed back to watch the game.

True story.

I would definitely like to see some changes to the field. The endzones would Look great Blue, One with a white KENTUCKY and One with a white WILDCATS in it. I also think that a new logo on the 50 would be great. The current one is washed out and just looks old. One thing I did notice at either the second or the last game of the year this year, they had sometype of stripes mowed into the grass similar to a baseball field around the 50 yard line. This looked really good. Maybe doing something that simple would make all the difference. And the astroturf sidelines really need to go. I understand the purpose of them, but maybe one that doesn't look like you got it at Home Depot next time.

Now, that is funny.

I believe something similar happened at the bowl game. A guy came out of the restroom and look as though he forgot to do anything other than walk up to the urinal before letting it flow. (sorry for mentioning this, if that guy happened to be anyone on the site)

Funny!!!

I also seem to remember that the restrooms had a community sink in a round circle. When the lines became long at halftime, wasn't it common for the fans to begin using it as a second urinal?
