LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Douglas Beaumont has added one more postseason award to his collection.
Beaumont, who played wideout, tailback and defensive back for Louisville Male, adds Mr. Football, voted on by a statewide panel of 16 media outlets, to the Gatorade, Paul Hornung and Roy Kidd awards for the best high school football player in the state.
Beaumont received seven votes for Mr. Football, followed by Franklin County's Kaelin Ammons with four, and Louisville Trinity quarterback Nick Petrino with three. Christian County quarterback Keith Tandy and Lexington Henry Clay defensive back Chase Minnifield got a vote each.
Beaumont said the award he really wanted eluded him throughout his high school football career.
"The most special would have been helping my team win a championship," Beaumont said. "But I didn't get that. ... Four years come and you always say, next year you can get it."
A championship was not an unreasonable expectation for him. The Bulldogs have been a fixture in the state playoffs for the past nine years, playing in four final games and winning it all twice. This past season the Bulldogs, who finished the regular season ranked No. 1, lost to Louisville Trinity in the quarterfinals, 38-34. Trinity eventually won the 4-A state championship.
Coming up short in the big game doesn't discount Beaumont's season, he said. He finished the season with 1,169 rushing yards, 550 receiving yards, and 32 touchdowns and led Male to an 11-1 record.
Beaumont has committed to play for the University of Louisville next year. There he could play alongside two previous Kentucky Mr. Football winners, Michael Bush and Brian Brohm, if both decide to put off their professional football careers for another season.
"Seeing the program becoming a powerhouse now, it's right here in my hometown," Beaumont said. "You might as well just stay, so your family can come see you play."
