View Full Version : In Defense of Marty Moore

I have said it here before and I'll say it again;
MARTY MOORE HAD HIS FACE MASK PULLED JUST AFTER HE CAUGHT THE BALL AND JUST BEFORE HE GOT HIT AND FUMBLED.
All anyone every talks about is the fumble. The officials, (who admit they were out of position on the fumble on the goal line call) were so worried about covering the play and fumble, miss calling the face mask.
A Clemson receiver reaches out at the moment Marty starts up field and grabs for a slight moment the mask. I was screeming the night of the game as the play was made we were going to get the ball back because of it. I like to have torn the room a part when they gave the ball back to Clemson. I SAW IT THEN! People I have watched that replay a thousand time just to make and its there. Watch the replay yourself. You will see his head turn to the left for a slight moment. Then he is hit and fumbles. It hard to maintain control when a facemask call should have been made.
Marty felt so bad about the play he never brought that up in the press conference.
He's a class guy and one of the greats to wear the blue.
To you 2006 Wildcats, "Win this one for Marty"!

Thanks for the reminder. I never thought it was his fault. I have always blamed it on the officiating. That was a TD earlier in the game too.

OK, I've never been hard on Marty and the fumble he made. But trying to blame it on a face mask and saying it is hard to hold onto the football is just grasping with straws for an excuse. He fumbled plain and simple. It was unfortunate, yes. Yes, the refs missed the face mask call. BUT, he still fumbled. Had he not which is something that most players do not do after getting their face mask grabbed, the missed penalty will be forgotten.

:cool:I loved Marty Moore and my heart ached for him...it is just another in a long line of "how to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory" stories...and when the fumble was recovered I knew the outcome of the game...however, never, ever was I down on Marty...what a great player and that's how I remember him...give me a bunch of Marty's, David Roller's and Dicky Lyon, Sr's. and we will kick some ***.
Back in those days I really don't remember anyone giving Marty grief over that play. (Thank goodness for no internet back then)
I just remember that he was such a well liked andstrong player for us that the feeling was of sympathy for Marty and regret in the loss. These feeling linger still today.
In a very much removed way we can gain a little redemption when we beat Clemson on the 29th.

I saw Marty play in high school and he was one of my favorite players. BUT, you have got to go down in that situation. The game is over, no need for a return.

Yes, Marty should have gone down. You always try to coach your kids about everything and then ever once in awhile a situation comes up you have not thought about.
Too bad he just didn't realize he was in the point of the game where yardage and more points were no longer the issue. But it all happen so quickly.

I, too, loved Marty Moore, Terry, and my heart also "ached for him." Also, johnkyblue is so right that the Moore play shouldn't have mattered anyway, for we had actually scored a touchdown that was incorrectly ruled a fumble. Like UedK said, beating Clemson would be really "sweet" for Marty Moore.

what he said....except read it again with the accent that Mel Gibson used as William Wallace in Braveheart.

After being named mr. irrelevant, he went on to play in the NFL for about 10 years. That's one heck of a long time there.

Marty used to be my neighbor back when he lived in Ashland. Very nice guy, would talk your leg off if you would let him... :D:D
Anyway, one day I finally got the nerve to ask him about the Peach Bowl. I thought I might have been taking my life into my own hands since Marty is a big guy, and he could have taken me out with just one finger and all... haha!!! :D
Anyhow, he smiled and told me that during all of his coaching he's had throughout his life on defense to take the ball the other direction when intercepted. And during the heat of the moment, that's what he did. But during that situation at the end of the game, he told me that he should have fallen down. Just wasn't thinking... going back to his natural instincts and all. But he did admit he made a mistake.
Now Marty's not losing sleep over his decision or anything, but he said that if he could go back in time and do it all over again... he'd fall down after the interception.

Marty was a converted fullback. When running backs get the ball, that's what they do - run. His offensive instincts came back and so be it.
Me?? I'm always proud when a Northern Kentucky boy wears the blue andwhite and does well. I'm prouder to say that Marty was only one of a LOT of Northern Kentucky boys to do so.
Long live the 9th Region!! (Let's see Terry - how many state titles did we win this year????)
