Just in case you’re wondering where University of Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich stands on the issue of men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino — and believe me, some are wondering — wait no longer.

“Rick Pitino is my coach,” Jurich said in his Freedom Hall suite right after the Cardinals’ 61-49 loss to Kentucky on Saturday. “I know people are asking. Quote me on this: He is the coach here for as long as he wants to be. Period.

"He resurrected this program. People don’t realize, they forget how far down we were. I don’t care if he has to rebuild this thing all over again, he’s the coach.”

I'm not sure who spins harder over there, Pitino or Jurich.

"People don’t realize, they forget how far down we were." Another nasty shot at their legend and HOF coach Denny Crum by Jurich.

Usually these type of quotes from the AD are the beginning of the end.

What is the purpose of this post?

I think it is the general consensus on this board that Pitino is going nowhere........

exactly what has he "rebuilt"? Things got pretty bad under Denny Crum for a while there, but not a whole heck of a lot worse than they are right now.

And by "nowhere" you mean the NIT.

Wow, I didn't realize that you could spin a block. Way to slam an ex-coach, shows true class.

I don't think that I've ever heard Mitch Barnhart throw Mumme/Bassett under the bus despite their wretched sins.

Yup, I was about to post the above as well. The end is near for RP and UL.

In Pitino's fifth year at UL--with 100% of his players being his own recruits--Pitino went to the NIT. If I were saying that about a UK coach, I would want him fired, and I have never called for a coach to be fired. Things don't look any better for UL this season. Things really haven't been so good for UL since Prop 48 was first enacted. UL has only been to the final four once since then, to the final 8 only one other time. It's not much commented upon that the secret to Crum's great teams were very low admission standards at UL. The Pervis Ellison recruiting class, UL's last before Prop 48, had ACT scores of 4, 5, 6, 7, 7, and 8. Theathletic ability of the players Crum signed after that was not the same as before. What Pitino faces goes deeper: the traveling teams have badly hurt the development of high school basketball players. The emphasis is on individual showing off rather than team play, and they play so many games that they don't ever practice. Heard a teevee commentatorsay that the reason European and South American teams are now beating the U.S. pros in international competitions is that players still practice over there, whereas in the U.S. all they do is play games. You have one basketball for 20 players during a game, whereas you have as many basketballs as you want for 10 players during a practice. At one time, Pitino would have made up for the lack of knowledge of the game on the part of his recruitsby practicing them to death, but the 20hour rulenow nixes that.

If Pitino makes the NIT, which he very well may not(he could easily lose 12 games in the BE), that would be 3 NITs out of 6 years. If it was the first three you could live with that, but years 5 and 6? You can also live with it if you are having great success the other years. UConn went to the NIT a couple of years in the last 10, but they also have 2 NCs, several Final 4s and Elite 8 appearances. Pitino has lost in the first weekend 2 out of the three years he did make it. So other than a lucky win against UWV, who completely choked away that Elite 8 game after getting a 20 point lead, he has had almost zero success at UL. THey weren't great Denny's last couple of years, but I would hardly say UL is vastly improved today over that time.

Fine with me if he stays. UL is terrible and doesn't seem to be headed up any time soon. They two most highly touted FR are not playing and seem to hate it at UL. Not good times to be a UL BB fan.

ROTFLMAO!!

Four?! FOUR?!!

sardiscat remembers why I sometimes refer to them as Brookshier State U.

Real trouble at Louisville for Pitino and their fans. They are going to get hammered in the Big East. For several seasons they coasted through a terrible conference. Looks like this year they thought they would load up their schedule at home with cup cakes and now they're really struggling.

This is the least excited I can ever remember being over defeating UL because they are really, really bad. I'm glad we won but they are a mess.

The thing that most surprised me Saturday was the reason UL was missing everything from outside was the shooting form of the guys missing the shots. Almost every time, they were falling away. In myplaying days, I could shoot a basketball as well as anybody who has ever breathed air, but I couldn't hit anythingfalling awayfrom 20' out. You have to go straight up when you shoot from outside. You send mixed messages to your brain when your body is leaning backwards but you're shootingthe ball forward. Falling away isn't as big a deal closer to the basket when your shot is more just a matter of the feel in your fingertips, but you need your whole body cooperating with itself when you're shooting from behind the 3 point line. Pitino used to be on top of that sort of thing, and it was stunning to see UL players clang one jumper after anotherwith that sort of flaw in their shooting form.

Don't you get 5 points for getting your name right on the ACT? :ggrin:

Now that UL is playing in a legit basketball conference, the program will remain mediocre. I saw the rest of their schedule and they may have 15 losses at the end of the year. You can't spell Pitino without NIT.
