Overview:
For me, I thought this game can be a measuring stick for Mickey DeMoss and the UK Lady Cats to see where exactly her team stands in the SEC. It was very telling if you ask me. Talent wise, the Lady Cats were totally out of their leagues. The LSU Lady Tigers just took it to them hard and didn't let up either.
But the good news for Mickey DeMoss is that she knows exactly where her team stands. As for that measure stick performance I took a look at last year's game against LSU down in Baton Rouge. You can tell that our defense really improved over the year. Last year the Lady Tigers scored 81 points on the Lady Cats who had 58. This years school was LSU 66 and Lady Cats 36. So, just point wise, we held LSU Lady Tigers to 66 points. But you are saying, so what? Let's take it even further comparing last years stats to this years. Last year, the Lady Tigers shot 33 of 66 to UK's 21 of 51 from the field. This year, the Lady Tigers shot 29 of 58 to UK's 14 of 48. The Lady Cats have cut down 4 made shots and 8 shot attempts from LSU.
So, you see the defense believe it or not is really has stepped up and improved over the year. I do know that Mickey DeMoss has been really putting emphasises (sp?) on defense during the offseason and this season. Still not convinced? Well, let's look at the rebounds from last year to this year. Last year, LSU had 37 total rebounds with 17 of them being offensive rebounds and UK had a total of 29 rebounds for the game and 13 of them offensive reboudns. As for this years game, LSU had a total of 34 rebounds with 13 of them being offensive and UK having 30 total rebounds with 12 of them offensive rebounds. As you can tell on the defense side of the ball, the Lady Catscut those total of offense rebounds down by 4 eliminating points from LSU.
Want more proof how the defense improved? Let's look at the turnovers. Last year UK forced 8 LSU turnovers. This year, the Lady Cats forced 13 turnovers. Yeah, I know some of this could be LSU throwing the ball away and stuff but it still proves that the defensive pressure is there.
Another good set of proof to show how far the defense has come you can look no further than at the "Points in the Paint", "2nd Chance Points", and "Fast Break Points". Last year, UK gave up 42 points in the paint whereas this year they only have up 34. That's an improvement of 8 points. For the "2nd Chance Points", last year UK gave up 17 points whereas this year just 10. That's an improvement of 7 points. And lastly, for "Fast Break Points", last year gave up 10 points whereas this this year just 6. The improvement in the "Points in the Paint" and "2nd Chance Points" can relate tothe lady Catstoughness downlow in the point on the defense side of the ball. Where as the Lady Cat's transition defense has improved as well.
This is more than I can say for the offensive side of the ball. If Mickey was to look at the offense compared to last year, she would probably see that it's probably is a little behind the learning curve probably. But this game does show how far the Lady Cats defense has come over the year. This team is very much improving and in it's first measure stick game, it can be seen.
So, now on with my The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly analysis of this game from today's action...
THE GOOD:
1) Carly Ormerod - This lady is a true freshmen playing her first game against real tough LSU team and what does she do? She showed that she is truely the Lady Cats point guard. She had a very decent game that is probably average for anybody else that's a sophmore, junior, or senior. She was the team's leading scorer with 14 points. She handled LSU's pressure moderatly find only having 4 turnovers. But she needs to set up her teammates more probably. She had zero assists. She also played the most minutes out of anybody for the Lady Cats. In 34 minutes of playing time, she was 5 of 11 including 4 of 4 from 3pt linefor a team high 14 points with 4 turnovers. The REX-Factor Candidate Consideration
2) The Fans - I was totally blown away by the noise that was coming from the crowd. For this game there was 5,930 fans there cheering on the Lady Cats. It was totally amazing and I know it helped the women get up for this game. Great job fans!!!! Keep it up. The REX-Factor Candidate Consideration
3) Measure Stick Game - In my overview, I broke down how this game is a measure stick game for Mickey DeMoss to see exactly where this team is. I think she got that a little bit of a measure on the defensive side of the ball. She has to be proud to see improvement from this side of the ball but less thrilled from the offensive side of the ball. The next true ultimate measure stick game is against Tennessee.
THE BAD:
1) Samantha Mahoney - Last year, she torched LSU with 22 points. This year, hats goes off to the LSU team. They hounded her like heck to make sure she didn't burn them this year. I don't know exactly if it was the defense or her just having a poor shooting game. In 30 minutes of playing time, she was 3 of 10 from the field including 0 for 1 from the 3pt line and 3 for 3 from the field for9 points with a team high 5 rebounds, 1 assists, and team high 6 turnovers.
2) Sarah Elliott - The two games I have seen her play, she seemed (to me at least) she has gotten slower. She didn't have any defensive rebounds! That's amazing! I think it was fair to say she was overmatched against Fowles. I think during the summer, she needs to work on losing weight but then gain the weight back but in muscle mass. She should dominate the game coming next year if you ask me. She will be a force to be reckon with though. In 23 minutes of playing time, she was 3 of 5 from the field and 1 of 2 from the line for 7 points with 1 rebound, which was offensive, and 2 turnovers.
THE UGLY:
1) Turnovers - The Lady Cats had 20 turnovers. You aren't going to win games with this many turnovers. They need to take better care of the ball. They are already at a disadvantage but they don't need to cripple theirselves even further.
2) Assist to Turnover ratio - As I mention above, 20 turnovers is amazing but as a team they only had 7 assists. So, the lady Cat's assist to turnover ratio is 1 assist to almost every 3 turnovers. That's not going to win you games. Easy goal is alway try for a 1:1 ratio and go from there.
3) Field Goal Shooting - The Lady Cats were 14 for 48 for 29.2% including 4 of 6 from 3pt line for 66.7%. Most of this can be because of Fowles and also the tough LSU defense. But overall everybody struggled.
4) Free Throw Shooting - The Lady Cats were 4 of 7 from the line for 57.1%. They need to take it aggressively to the rim. Either make the other team foul you or get a layup. But be aggressive!
The REX-Factor Award:
The name of this award has been changed from Player of the Game Award to The REX-Factor Award. When I pick a player, I'm not looking for the actual player of the game which sometimes can be the same. But most of the time, I tend to give it to a person I think without their effort, the team either wouldn't be in the game or refused to let the team lose. Exactly like the X-factor. So, thanks to BigBlueAngus who came up with this new name. For my The REX-Factor Awardis going to go to the fans that was at the game. I thought they really really supported the team will there. The crowd was loud from the get go to the finish. So, Congratulations UK Crowd for winning The REX-Factor Award.
