View Full Version : It's My Turn

I know this is mainly a UK sports forum and therefore, have hesitated in making this request. But I also see this as a gathering place of friends who care and are always willing to pray or offer encouraging words if one develops a need. I guess it’s now my turn to call on you.
I have a beautiful 6 year old daughter. She was born perfect, never sick a day in her life until 11 months old when she got the flu. What was different with her was the virus got into her spinal fluid and worked it's way into her brain causing a swelling called encephalitus. Basically, it choked off the nerves that control her physical motor skills. That led to a movement disorder called Dystonia. It left her completely incapacitated. She can't talk, walk, play, hold a toy, she can't even eat. We have to feed her through a feeding tube surgically placed into her abdomen. She has some movements but they are mostly involuntary. Her brain misfires rapidly causing her to stiffen up or arch backward. Sometimes to the point of pain.
Her mind is still there. She’s right where she is suppose to be for her age. She has been tested using cue cards. She has a million dollar smile and uses expressions to communicate. She’s just locked in a body thatnolongerworks.
I haven’t been online much lately because we are currently in Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville where she is fighting for her life due to an onset of pneumonia. She has actually stopped breathing twice. It’s been rough but she is showing signs of improvement.
Here’s the good news:
The FDA has approved a medical technique called “Deep Brain Stimulation”. They can actually put sensors in the brain to help it fire the electrical impulses the way it is suppose to. The youngest you can be is 7 years old because of certain brain developments. She will be 7 in February and we will soon be going to Washington for the procedure.
We have actually talked to the doctors doing the surgery. They are having wonderful and dramatic results with ALL patients undergoing the treatment. We were told of a little boy who had dystonia so bad that the only way he could get any type of relief was to lay on his stomach in a fetal position with his butt in the air…..Now he can ride a bicycle. Needless to say, we are excited.
For you, as my friends, I want you to be thankful. Not just for medical achievements but for life and health. If you can go home and have your kids run to you; embrace them. If you can sit down to a meal together, listen to them with your heart. If you can hear them say “I Love You”, cherish that moment. And when you pray, please….remember my little girl.
This is Gracie and me two weeks before she got sick 6 years ago:

When Jesus had gone indoors, the blind men came to Him, and He asked them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?"
"Yes, Lord," they replied.
Then He touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith will it be done to you";
Well, I also believe. He will be with her and she will walk again. May God bless your family as you prepare for this healing.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

BK, you're right, this is a sports forum. But you are already finding out - and I'm sure will continue to find out - that this group is more than just a bunch of folks who want to talk about UK! You're right about another thing: my wife and I, who have had 4 kids grow up and move on, have told each other countless times how lucky we have been!
My best to you and your lovely little girl...I will be watching for your reports in Feb.

Why wait? Lets pray right now! If you guys want to pray this prayer with me as you read this then feel free!
Father God we come before you now with thankful hearts. We thank you for every blessing that you give us each day. We thank you for caring enough about us to send your only Son to die in our place. We know that because of that sacrifice that you KNOW how hard it is for us to see our children hurting in any way - you have experienced the worst pain that any parent can feel.
Father, we come before you right now and ask that you be with Gracie and her family. We ask for the healing that you promised to us, Lord. Bring peace to the family and let them know that you are near, Father. Take this sickness from her and make her whole again. I have seen Doctors amazed at a medically inexplicable turn around in someone's condition and what a witness it can be - I ask for that type of healing today, Father! Lord, please heal Gracie and return her to health! We know that you are more powerful than ANY treatment that man can devise and we know that you can do it instantly. Lay your healing hand on Gracie!
We love you, Father, and ask all of these things in your name, Amen!

Just a quick update. Gracie was taken off the ventilator today. All vitals are stable and she is smiling again.
Your thoughts and prayers have meant alot to her. I have read them to her and called you all by name. Including all the PMs I received. I wish you could see the look in her eyes. She knows lots of folks are pulling for her and seems to draw strength from it.
I started to take her picture to post here but she let me know she didn't want to. I couldn't get her to smile for the camera. I asked her when we get her fixed up and looking pretty and she's not in the hospital if she would like to send the Nation an updated picture and there was the positive affirmation, an immediate smile.

BK, I had never opened this thread. Having done so today I am very sorry I didn't. I saw that subject line but being so busy around the holidays I just didn't open it. I had no idea of the importance within.
BK, I can't even imagine how deeply painful this must be for you. Having a beautiful and healthy child fall prey to a condition like this has to cause pain for you and your family that comes back far too often and a pain that in many ways never goes away. I pray that things get much better for Gracie as soon as possible. She is a beautiful little girl.
I am familiar with both Dystonia and DBS surgery. I have a friend in PA that has had one form of Dystonia for many years. She recently had the DBS surgery herself. No amazing results yet, but it can take a bit of time before that to happen as the doctors adjust for the individual. She does see improvement though. Hers is Cervical Dystonia which involves involuntary spasms in the neck and shoulder causing the head to pull to one side and then just stay there and a few other symptoms.
I do not know all that much about DBS surgery but it sounds as if your daughters condition is one that would benefit from its purpose. I certainly pray that if she does have it one day that it is a complete success. I also hope that there are even better options for her to come along very soon as well.
Wildcat Hugs and Prayers for Gracie, you and your family from all of us.

Hello everyone,
Thanks for all the new responses. I read them to Gracie when they are posted.
Sorry to take so long to get back. The last couple weeks have been quite a roller coaster ride. Gracie got out of the Critical Care Unit two days after she was taken off the respirator. She still required oxygen but at least she was out of the woods.
The next day, a newbie respiratory therapist was trying to suction out her throat and caused her to aspirate. It went from bad to worse and soon became aSTAT situation. Within seconds, there was a room full folks trying to revive her. She did pull through but it cost us four more days in CCU.
Anyway, she is doing fine now and brought her home on friday. We piled up on the couch yesterday to watch the game with Alabama. She loves for me to explain the game to her. She wants me to tell you guys that if you have any prayers left, you might want to send one up for our Wildcats. She doesn’t think they have a prayer this year. “OUCH”.
Hey Freethrow. I haven’t heard of “Cervical Dystonia.” I know there are many types. They are calling Gracie’s “Secondary Dystonia”. The damage is in the basil ganglia part of the brain. You are right. It does take awhile to get everything set just right. They told us that we could possibly be there as long as three months. I have been to Pittsburgh with Gracie. There is a world reknowned movement disorder specialist there named Leland Albright. He implanted a baclofen pump in her abdomen that helped a lot and made it a lot less painful. If you or your friend would like more info, shoot me a PM and I will be glad to give you the details.
Thanks again, Wildcat Nation. You have played an important part. I will update you on the latest happenings.

I'm so excited for Gracie to be back home. That is wonderful news, we are still praying for her regularly at morning prayer in my office. My hats off to the doctor who was able to implant that pump in a body so small, that must have been quite a task...we use those alot where I work so I'm somewhat familiar with what is involved there. I'm glad it is helping her. We will continue to pray for her as you enter the next phase of her treatment. Give Gracie a hug from me.

I'm glad she's home and doing better. Did she develop aspiration pneumonia from that incident? I'm not sure how that could be avoided with aspiration...we went through something similar with my youngest child as a newborn. Instead of a pediatric lung specialist as promised, the hospital sent someone from the nursery with a bulb syringe. That costhera week in intensive care. I'm sorry that happened to Gracie, butpleased to hear thatshe recovered so quickly.

4thecards, you are always welcome here. Thanks for sharing your story.
It is tough. I guess we just learn to play the hand we are dealt and never give up. I do thank God for giving her to me to take care of. Gracie has taught me many things through the years. She has given me the opportunity to discover the depth of my own character, my commitment, and my abilities. She drives mefurther than I would ever go on my own, working harder, looking foranswers to many questions. Some of which, there are no answers.
She has taught me about how precious this life really is. About not taking things for granted. She has taught me to have hope and faith and reminds me to pray. I don't worry so much about my own needs anymore. Through Gracie, I have learned about giving and unconditional love.

I haven't been on here much lately and just read your post about your daughter. Gracie will be a permanent fixture in my prayers. My stepdaughter, who I raised from the age of eight also has dystonia. She was diagnosed at the age of 8 years after many visits to doctors who misdiagnosed her as MD,
MS or cerebal palsy. Hers started in her left foot and soon her entire left side was involved. She had no balance and would fall out of chairs.I will not go into detail here, but she stayed on her knees and chest folded up most of her middle school years. She went to Emory university to a great, great doctor, Dr Mahlon Delong, who was at the time the scientific research Dr for the dystonia foundation. When she was 15 she had brain surgery. She is now 21 and is not perfect but much better. My father - in - law also has a form of this called dysphonia which effects his vocal chords. I would love to chat with you sometime about this. I spent a lot of time researching this disease. My prayers are with Gracie and you and your wife.

UPDATE:
Hello all. We still don't have a date for her surgery. We may end up in Atlanta instead of D.C. Also, we have recently signed Gracie up for that new reality show called "Miracle Workers". We may wait just a little longer to see if they respond. According to their web site, her condition is one that they are looking for.
Some of the moderators and members of this site recentlyshowered her with several gifts, UK related merchandise, that she absolutely loves. I know I have thanked you all privately but I also wanted to thank you publicly. It has meant so much to her and our family knowing you all are there and care so much about her.
I also want to thank the UK Cheerleader Squad for the autographed picture. She really lit up when she saw that and smiles whenever she sees you on TV.
And last but not least, thank you, Eric, aka BigBlueAngus and all the folks at "Logos Unlimited" for the t shirts you made for her. On one of them, they put Dad's "Feeding Time" logo and the other one has her name on the front along with #1 Wildcat Fan. On the back, they put the number 44. Eric saidthey picked that numberbecause Chuck Hayes was such a fighter. AWESOME, we love it.
Here's a couple pictures of her in her new UK Cheerleaders uniform. She has lost her two front teeth and is trying to hide it with her tongue. LOL.

Thanks for providing the link, Blue Knight. I would also like to submit a request for her and will ask Kristen for the information.I'm wondering...doesMiracle Workers have resources that help withliving expenses for the familyduring hospital stays? That wasn't mentioned on their website, but it would bewonderful if they did. I'm assuming it would still be done out of state and remember yousaid it would be several weeks before she could come home afterwards.

Good question. I know that other reality shows do that and I've been told this one does too. But not by an official of the program. That's one of the reasons we are trying this route. Here's to hoping.

Hello everyone. Here is the latest update. We never heard from Miracle Workers but that is ok. They are doing alot of great things. Thanks again to everyone who took the time to write to them.
Since my last post, we have been in contact with doctors in California, Atlanta, New York and Washington DC. It seems the best is still in DC. The doctor there has called us on several occasions and asked for a documented video. We sent that tohis teamover a month ago. He called today with positive news. The team feels confident they can help her. They want us there in two weeks on 5/30/06 for the preliminaries.
I have had a couple of PMs from some of you that knows someone or has someone in the family with dystonia. I wanted to go ahead and list this web site from the "Washington Brain and Spine Institute" ofDoctor Lavine with his picture and medical background. He said he has done hundreds of these procedures and no less than one a week. He gets results even from secondary dystonia. http://www.brainsurgery.com/pubs/24_61_532.cfm
Our family is so emotional and excited right now. Please, continue to remember Gracie.

I just gotta share this with you guys. I had no idea how we were gonna get Gracie to DC. It's hard for her to ride in a car seat for extended periods of time. A 10 hour road trip would be a nightmare.
"Angel Flights" turned us down because she wasn't able to walk off the plane on her own.A coupleof the airlines have a special package for situations like ours but you have to give them a two week notice. No exceptions. We missed that by one day.
No way were we gonna change our appointment. We have waited too long. We made the decision we were going and the "how" would come.
Two days ago, we got a call from someone who offered a private jet. I wish I could tell you who it is but they wish to remain anonymous. They are gonna fly us there and wait for Gracie to make her office visit and then fly us back home. Yes, we are shouting some victory cries around here.
Thank you all for your prayers. Prayer does work. I'm reminded of something a wise man once said: "Fear knocks at the door. Faith answered. There was no one there."

Great news!!! We were told Gracie is a perfect candidate for Deep Brain Stimulation. They were very impressed with her MRI and how small the actual damage was.
They told us she has a 90% chance of regaining control of all her mid section. No more painful arching and twisting of her back and neck. That would be immediate results. She should be able to learn to use her hands again. They couldn't promise she would ever walkor talk but with lots of rehabilitation, it's definately possible. We were shownvideos of some of their patients that did.
I wish I could give you an actual surgery date but there are still a few details that need to be worked out. As soon as we have that established, I will let you know.

First, let me apologize for leaving you guys hanging like that. I was having a bad day. The problem was concerning Gracie's insurance. At the time, it didn't look like it was gonna be any good. The cost was astronomical to say the least.
I won't go into all the details here, but alot of good folks went to bat for Gracie. Our state senator, Richie Sanders got involved and got the job done. If anyone would like to drop him a note of thanks, his email is richie.sanders@lrc.ky.gov (mailto:richie.sanders@lrc.ky.gov). Also, Senator Brett Guthrie has been instrumental in making sure Gracie is taken care of.
It is now confirmed, her actual surgery date is scheduled just two weeks away on July 28th. I told her to smile big for WCN and give you guys the good news...

Just a quick update. Surgery starts at 7:00 am on the 28th. It's suppose to be complete by 2:00 pm. We are not gonna be there as long as we first expected. It's funny how you get completely different information from different doctors.
We were told yesterday that she would only be in the hospital for a couple of days. They will still do some fine tuning on a daily basis for about another week and then we come home. There will still be follow up visits every two or three months for the next year.

Thank you for remembering my little girl. Right now, as I type, she is in surgery. I was thinking about you guys and came to the hospital library where they have computer access for patients and families.
Graciewas actually admitted yesterday for preparation. She has been so excited. She knows exactly what is going on. It was hard for her to sleep last night for being anxious, excited, etc. I was impressed that she didn't even cry when they gave her the IV. I 'm sometimes in awe of her courage. The only time she cried was when they took her into the surgery room and Mom and Dad couldn't go with her. One of the team members came back out and told us that by the time they were in the room, she was smiling and winning hearts again.
I will write more later on.

I just spoke with Blue Knight, who asked me to post the most recent update. He had been posting from the library at Children's Hospital, but the library closed at 5 PM, so Bruce has no access to a computer.
Gracie came out of surgery at 6 PM and everyone was very pleased with how the surgery went. She was in surgery for 11 hours, so you can imagine that she's been through quite a procedure. She's currently in intensive care and will be so for the rest of the night. Doctors have told Blue Knight that progress will be very gradual, but they are looking forward to a good recovery. Blue Knight also noted that the people at Children's have been wonderful. (I can attest to this, as I've a lot of dealings with the hospital through the years and have friends who work there. It's a wonderful hospital.)
I think Blue Knight is experiencing a little culture shock, as well. He'll be here for at least a week or two, so we hope to get together and have a meal and swap a few lies....:thumbup

I just spoke with Blue Knight again and he wants everyone on WCN to know how much he appreciates the prayers and support that have been sent to Gracie and her family. I could feel his joy over the phone, as things are going much better than expected. :thumbup
He has been told that her improvement will be gradual, over the next several weeks, but this morning she was able to lift her arm and bend it at the elbow, something that would have been impossible for her before the surgery. He also mentioned--and this may have been posted before--that Gracie is one of the youngest children to have gotten this procedure, as her condition was the result of an injury instead of congenital.
If there are further updates before Monday AM, Bruce will call me and I'll post them as soon as I'm near a computer.

He wants everyone from WCN who sent the balloons to know that Gracie loves them. :) He continues to be awed by the support Gracie and the family are getting from all of you here.
She will be in the hospital for another day or two and is still in considerable pain. The doctors are saying that it will be from two weeks to two months before we will see a whole lot of difference in Gracie's motor functioning, but they remain very optimistic.
Bruce said that he will call with another update later today or early tomorrow. (He'll probably be back on the Children's Hospital computers by then, so you may get the next update from the source.)

Hello everyone! It looks like we get to leave the hospital today. YAY!! Gracie has been sitting in her chair for the last couple hours. Not once has she arched or twisted. We arenot sure if it's because she's tired or we are getting early results. I choose to believe the best. Julie and Iare bothnoticing small, subtle differences and have high hopes that they are a sign of things to come.
I told her I was coming down to write to you guys. Her eyes lit up, backed with that smile of hers. I know she can't wait for me to read her, all your posts and responses.
Jeff is right. Gracie's procedure was documented, complete with photos because of how rare her condition is. She wasn't born with it. It was caused by an injury inflicted bythe fluvirus. They are looking to offer hope for others with similar circumstances.
I can't say enough about Dr. Lavine and his medical team. The best in the nation as far as I'm concerned. The main reason the surgery took so long was because of how picky he is and wanted to make sureeverything was precise. One ml. could be the difference in success or failure. He treated my daughter like his own andis greatly respected by all in the medical field.
I will keep you all updated as she continues to recover.
Ok Jeff. It's time for us to hook up. Anyone care to join us? :)

Here's another update. Just had a long conversation with Bruce and the news is very good. Gracie left the hospital yesterday and is doing better than fine--no stretching or twisting since Sunday and her pain has abated.
In fact, Mr. and Mrs. Blue Knight took their son and Gracie to the Smithsonian--Museum of Natural History--and were out for a couple of hours, including short stints in the unbelievable heat. Luckily, they rode an AC'd bus from the hotel to the AC'd Smithsonian. Bruce says he believes in giving Gracie all the experiences possible and says that she had a great time. They are thinking about going up to Baltimore and spending some time at the Inner Harbor and the aquarium there. Gracie continues to smile more and more, so you can imagine how good her family must feel.
She has an appointment to see the docs at Children's on Thursday, when they will give Bruce a better feeling about how long they'll have to stay here. (I'm getting the feeling that the family would love to be back in Franklin, out of the sometimes chaotic energy of DC.) We're hoping to find a way to get together this weekend.
They are alread looking into rehab centers, as Gracie has lots of catching up to do. She will have to spend fairly extended periods of time in rehab, so she has her work cut out.
On a personal note, I've got to say that I am getting a lot out of this--each time I talk to Bruce, I have to smooth the huge goosebumps on my arms. There is something very special happening here. We had a fun conversation tonight, straying at times from Gracie to our mutual love of music, cars, and general good humor. (Calsegs, Bruce's oldest son also plays in a rock band. :thumbup)
More next time I hear from Bruce...

Blue_Knight wrote:

More from Bruce. The appointment went very well. Gracie continues to exceed expectations, so much so that the docs have released her to go back home. So the family will catch a plane for Franklin tomorrow. Gracie is beginning to stiffen again, but Bruce said that the docs expected that, that it's part of the healing. It will be temporary, but she will like return to the baseline that existed before the surgery. I told Bruce I'd let him fill in the details, because he knows the particulars and can describe more how the healing is supposed to work. But the family is very pleased.
They went to Baltimore today, toured the Inner Harbor, and went to the aquarium. They had a terrific time. Bruce was quite taken with the crabcakes--Maryland makes the best!--and the crab. Glad he got to get up there.) Despite the searing heat, the breezes off the water kept them reasonably cool.
The bad news--for me--is that I won't get to meet Gracie and the family this time. But they are coming back in six weeks, the weather will be better....so who knows, maybe a cookout?
We were saying our goodbyes when a huge thunderstorm--a blessed harbinger of the exit of this heat wave--and we were cut off when he lost his cell. He will undoubtedly have much to say tomorrow or the next day.
But for now, things look very good. :thumbup

Hello Everyone! It is great to be back home. After reading all of your posts, we all had to dry our eyes out. Including Gracie. You all are so important to her. She has been strengthened by your prayers, blessed with your love, and encouraged by your hope.
We've had quite an experience in DC. I agree that there is truly something special going on here. I have personally witnessed what I believe to be a higher power at work. There were so many things that took place in order for this trip to happen, I couldeasily write a small book about it. There were times it would have been easy to look at the circumstances and doubt it would happen. If just one piece of the puzzle had been missing, it wouldn't have. I guess I'm still learning, even at my age, that success is not a destination, it's a journey. Always have faith and stay the course.
The first few days after the surgery were incredible. No sign of dystonia. She was free from the twisting and arching. She was already working one of her arms by bending it at the elbow. She could look in any direction she wanted to.Doctor Lavinetold us that it was a great sign but that she would return back to her base line and improve from there. He was very optimistic that Gracie would takebetween 6 and 8 weeks. We were toldthat some took as long as 6 months to a year.
When it started coming back, she cried. We had to explain it all to her in an excited way and you could see that hope start taking the placeof tears. She did regress some but thankfully, she hasn't returned to the way she was. I went home for lunch today and she was on the couch watching Mr. Rogers. I could see her from the kitchen table and she looked up at me and smiled. I stuck my hand up and waved my fingers at her. Instantly, her little hand went up and waved back. Well....down here in southern Kentucky, we did a little thing that we like to call, " 'Hooping and Hollering." YEEE HAAW!! THAT'S MY GIRL!
Once the dystonia is in check, Gracie will undergo intense therapy. She still has to overcome the initial damage. She is such a fighter. I'm posting some pictures and you can see her still trying to work that arm. Who knows, maybe some day she will be designing graphics just like Dad.

Just above that picture, click on "View Slideshow."
Before I close, I want to send a special thanks to Jeff Craddock. For the calls and local support. Jeff is one cool dude and I hope to take him up on that cookout.

Thank you for the update and the photos, Bruce. She appears to be going through a growth spurt...what a beautiful girl she is and more so every day.Looks like a private plane/jet...is that from the sameindividualwho arranged for transportation on earlier trips? It's really something to see everything come together for Gracie and your family. You're blessed, and there's a reason for that. Thanks for allowing us to follow Gracie's story.
