It's being reported elsewhere that Mike Archer has interviewed for the DC position at North Carolina State.

If I remember right, both Joker and Archer have 2 year contracts rather than 1 year that the other assistants have. Being that year 4 just ended, that would mean both their contracts would be up for negotiation. I wonder if this is a bargaining chip or if he is not satisfied with the contract offer (if there is one at all).
Personally, I'd like to see him with at least 1 more year. I expect the defense to be considerably better next year. Much like the offensive improvement this year, I think the defense will show that same kind of improvement.

Let him go. I am sure Brooks can dig up a better DC somewhere.

We wouldn't have to look very far, Chuck Smith would make a good DC.

No, NC State. Their site on Scout.com has a premie article about Archer. I don't subscribe so can't read the entire article. He may also be interviewing at North Carolina, but I haven't heard that one.

If Archer leaves and we promote from within, I would bet a substantial sum of money that the new DC will be Steve Brown. Smith doesn't have enough seasoning at this level yet.

Interesting. It's quite fascinating that NC State is where Archer's former boss, Bill Cowher, graduated from.

CJ says that Archer and O'Brien coached together in early 90's.

I doubt Archer goes anywhere for next year. He deserves one maybe even 2 more years to prove what he can do, IMO. He has been sattled with probation, and youth. I'm not even mentioning the lack of overall talent on that side of the ball...
Archer is a good coach if given the right personel.
If he does leave, I'd like to make a run for either of the Ryan brothers. One is DC of the Raiders and the other is the DC of the Ravens. Their dad lives in Anderson Co. and is the creator of the famed bears 46 Defense.

I have been curious as to why the specifics of Brooks' new contract haven't been made public. Is it just a coincidence that Archer is looking to leave?

I hope Archer gets the job. Good for us, IMO and good for him.
There's also speculation that some NFL teams have inquired about his availability.
It's painfully obviousgiven the fact that Archer is interviewing - again - that he is looking to leave. What is not obvious is whether this is his choice or a choice made for him.

Whether Archer goes or stays, the defense is going to get a lot better.
It's whether he gets the credit he deserves for it or not.

This could be the next biggest thing for the UK program since winning the Music City Bowl.

What type of asst coach was Larry Coker at Miami? Was he defense or offense b4 he took the head coaching position? Frankly, Archer leaving is no loss at all imo except maybe the kids like him- thatI don't know.

My feelings are coach, whatever you are going to do, do it now.
Let the team move on to preparing for a better 2007, knowing who's going to be the DC.

Isn't this what the CAT fans have been waiting for???????????
It makes you wonder if Brooks took over some of the DC duties the last couple of games. They were markedly better. You would think that they played well enough the last couple of games for Archer to keep his job if he wants, unless they played better because someone else was doing the coaching. I have zero info on this, just pure speculation. I know Brooks was very, very frustrated with the D before the UT game and stated in private that he would have to do something about the defense, whatever that means.

Doesn't Archer have a kid at UK? Would that weigh into his decision?

I obviously have no idea if Archer will be back as DC next year or not but there are some intriguing possibilities for DC vacancies right now, especially in the SEC, including both people with experience as a DC and head coach, and position coaches who might be looking to make a move up:
Dom Capers, DC for the Miami Dolphins (was he recently reassigned as "special assistant to the head coach" or something like that?); if Alabama can't pay enough to bring him there and the new coach doesn't keep him, he might be looking for a job; was head coach of the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans and DC for the Steelers
Joe Kines, DC at Alabama under the prior staff, also LB coach and assistant head coach; was Alabama's DC for four years, was DC at Georgia, Arkansas and Florida previously and Arkansas' head coach for a season
Bobby Allen, DB coach at Arkansas, was DC there on two different occasions; has been position coach for just about every defensive unit; was also DC for Houston Nutt at Murray State; began working as a DC at about age 27 (though not at Division I-A level)
Greg Hudson, DC at East Carolina for the past 2 years, was DC at Minnesota before that (and also recruiting coordinator there) and assistant head coach at Cincinnati; ECU has improved greatly on defense under him
Earl Lane, DL coach at LSU, assistant for 10 years under Jim Leavitt, strong recruiter in Florida
Doug Mallory, DB coach at LSU, coached at Oklahoma State and Maryland before that and at Indiana under his father Bill Mallory; was DC at WKU in the early 1990s; LSU's secondary was outstanding this year
Tracy Rocker, DL coach at Arkansas, won the Outland and Lombardi trophies prior to being on the NFL All rookie team; member of college football Hall of Fame; units at Arkansas and Cincinnati played well
Terry Price, DE coach at Auburn, former NFL player, was DL coach at WKU 12 years ago
Don Dunn, DT coach at Auburn, from Louisville
Bradley Dale Peveto, special teams coordinator and LB coach at LSU, DC at MTSU before that
Billy Davis (former 49ers DC and DC for 3 other NFL teams)
Tommy West, head coach at Memphis - if Memphis fired him after his recent 2-10 season he would be an interesting possibility as a DC somewhere
Chuck Amato, just fired as NC State head coach, former assistant head coach at Florida State for defensive units
Not recommending these guys, but just curious if anyone knows their current status:
Whatever happened to Rick Smith, the former UK DC who had to give up the Georgia Tech DC job over resume issues? I thought he went to East Carolina as their DC but I don't know where he is now.
And where is Joe Lee Dunn (former DC for Memphis, Mississippi State, etc.) now, after being dumped mid-season as Memphis' DC?
Does Woody Wiedenhofer, former Missouri and Vanderbilt head coach and Steelers DC, who went toNew Mexico State with Mumme, have much luster these days?

How about Rutgers coach. He was DC for Miami. He'd be a good one.

I can't see a guy who turned down the Miami head coaching job turn around and accept a DC job. I was surprised he turned down Miami.

Well I for one think Archer's defense played a big part of UK winning the Music City Bowl:thumbup:thumbup:thumbup

Thiswasalluded toearlier in this threadTrueBlue....but the question remains...did the light bulb suddenly go on for the D or did Brooks step in and take a more assertive hand in the D?
I'm sorry my friend, but I need to see more to be sold on Archer.

I have hoped for some time that we would make a run at the one who coaches at Baltimore. Also, if Brooks was responsible for the improvement of the defense the final two games, is it possible for him to take over the role of DC. I believe Schiano at Rutgers is their DC.

There is an unconfirmed report on the free football forum on TCP/Rivals that Archer has declined.

Archer has a daughter at UK, she was a manager for the football team, there was a picture of her with Jacob Tamme a while back. SHe may be a senior and ready to graduate, I don't know, even if she isn't, I'm sure she's a big girl and could take care of herself at UK if daddy bolted to NC State.
