On not being ranked in the polls…
“We still have a lot of teams left to face like Tennessee and Florida, and we don’t want that [the rankings] to be our main goal. We want to focus on our goal of winning the SEC Championship.”

I realize I'm probably being overly-sensitive about this, and probably just picking on semantics...but I really hope our goal is not just to win the SEC championship.

That said, I'm glad Joe's focus is on that, rather than just being ranked. :thumbup

I'm OK with a "one-goal-at-a-time" approach from this squad. Let's focus on the SEC Championship first, then worry about the NCAA. Fact is, we're at the mercy of the NCAA selection comittee and will only earn greater respect by doing well in the SEC. We must beat FL, UT, AL, LSU's of our conference to earn a good draw for the NCAA.

Let's go Joe! Keep playing well and the rest will happen!

You're probably right, which is why I prefaced my remark with "overly sensitive". There is a tendancy, amongst all humans, to "let up" once a goal is attained. I hope that wouldn't be the case with our basketball team.

My thoughts exactly, SEC, SEC Tourney, NCAA Tourney in that order. Take care of the first and the road for theothers gets easier.

Probably a dumb question,,but has there ever been a year when we won it all,,the SEC, the SEC tourn and the NCAA ?

I wouldn't think so. I'm not exactly sure when the SEC Tournament began, but I assume it was in the early-to-mid 1980s, so that would exempt the '78 team.

The '96 team, of course, lost to Mississippi State in the championship of the SEC Tourney.

SEC Tourney has been an on, off, on again thing, but the answer to your question is that the NC teams in 48, 49, 51 and 98 won all three, SEC regular season, SEC tourney and the NCAA.

SEC did not play the SEC tourney in 58 or 78, but those teams also won the SEC regular season as well as the NCAA.

The 96 team won the SEC regular season but lost in the SEC tourney before winning the NCAA and the1998 team won all three.

1997-1998 season UK won sec regular season and eastern division (14-2), won the SEC tournament (beat bama, ark, and sc), and then won the NCAAtournament (beat sc state, st. louis, ucla, duke, stanford, utah).

Rome wasn't built in a day or even twice a week.

We're not building Rome, though. It's already built. We're just responsible for its upkeep.

I trust Raleighcat is correct, and that Joe didn't mean that our only goal is winning the SEC championship.

If Joe is correct, and Coach Smith set the goal at the beginning of this season of winning the SEC championship...I'll be disappointed. No less of a fan, mind you, but somewhat disappointed.

A good goal for the Chicago Cubs is to make the playoffs. That's not a good goal for, say, the New York Yankees. Their's is to win the World Series.

Our program is to college basketball what the Yankees franchise is to Major League Baseball. (But boy do I hate the Yankees.) :thumbup

I believe the SEC East and SEC regular season championship are 2 of their 4 goals every year. The others being the SEC and NCAA tournaments. Last year was the first time a Tubby-led team failed to acheive even one of their goals. I doubt if that's a record but 8 straight years ain't bad.

Come on man, let it go, it was just a quote the guy made. He didn't say it was their only goal of the year. I am sure he is sorry that he didn't phrase the quote like you would have liked to hear. Anyways, his quote that the SEC is the right thing to focus on right now, they should be focusing on each and every game seperately, not on winning the NCAA's.

Thanks Shim. I was getting a bit carried away there. I've got a bad habit of responding to people when they quote my posts. You're right, I should just let it go. (Which, well, I had...but then you go and quote me again.)
