I wasn't at the game or anything, but last week my former high school was playing one of their rivals to a tight game and led by one with like six seconds remaining. There was a stoppage of play because blood was spotted on one of the players on my high school team's shorts. The player went over to the side of the court and the team huddled around him so no one could see while he changed shorts quickly. Upon re-entering the game the player was hit with a technical foul for failing to go to the locker room to change shorts. The other team hit both foul shots and won the game by one.
Does anyone know why this is a rule, and if you were the ref, wouldn't you remind the coach or player of such an obscure rule or overlook it in such a critical game situation?

First, you never overlook a violation of the rules. If it's wrong in the first minute, it's wrong in the last minute. I'll get an answer and try to post it tomorrow, but let me be quick to point out, "preventative officiating," is always a good idea.

I've looked at the rule book and can't find this situation anywhere. I have a call in, and will report the answer as soon as I get it.
My thoughts are this. If a player is taken out of the game for whatever reason, a sub has to be immediately available to replace him/her. The coach has 30 seconds to replace the player, but if he doesn't, it results in a delay of game technical. This might have been what happened.

That may very well be it. But, the way it was described to me is that the player did not go back into the lockeroom to change and that was the violation.
Thank you for your research.:D

Well I was wrong.:( I appreciate so much these questions because since I retired, it's more difficult staying up with some rules that don't happen often.
Rule 10, Article 7, sub topic h states.
It shall be a techincal foul if a player commits an unsporting foul. This includes, but is not limited to, acts or conduct such as: Removing the jersey and/or pants/skirt within the visual confines of the playing area.
The official was correct in calling a T. He could've helped the situation by doing some preventitive officiating, but ultimately, it's the coaches responsibility to know the rules.

Thanks again for clarifying
