I have a question about a situation that I have never heard of before.

This happened in a local high school game (Virginia)in which a nephew of my was playing. My nephew's team was on defense and one of the players tried to draw an offensive foul on the ball-handler. As we see in almost any game the defender fell as soon as the offensive player touched him. Contact was minimal and the official called a personal foul on the defender for quote, "faking a foul". He did not call a block or a technical, but a personal foul. The coach of my nephew's team went completely wild and heDID receive a technical. After the game he stated, "There is no rule that allows an official to call a personal foul on a player for "faking a foul"; a technical foul is another matter, but that is not what the official called."

So, is there a rule concerning this or did the official get it wrong?

Because I didn't see the play, I can only speculate. First of all if there was actual contact, it should have been called a block or charge. But, the penalty for faking a charge is a technical foul. There doesn't have to be, but normally is a warning issued before calling a T.

The play situation you described could have called 2 ways and 1 is more severe than the other. The first way is a T which means the offended team get's 2 shots and the ball. The other way is a block which the penalty could be only the ball, if the offended team was not in the bonus. Remember, either way the foul counts as a personal and team foul.

It sounds like the official was trying to go easy on the defender and stated his call wrong.
