With the college basketball season in full court press, Wheaties® announces a special-edition package rolling out this week featuring the elite University of Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball program. Kentucky has built a reputation by which the standard in basketball has been set, befitting of the “Breakfast of Champions®” tradition of honoring remarkable champions.

For over a century, the Kentucky Wildcats has built an unparalleled legacy, maintaining college basketball’s winningest tradition. As 7-time national champions (1948, 1949, 1959, 1958, 1978, 1996 and 1998), Kentucky men’s basketball teams have accumulated more overall wins, more national postseason tournament appearances and wins, more Southeastern Conference championships and more SEC Tournament titles than any other school. In addition to leading the nation in attendance in 10 of the last 11 seasons, Kentucky’s win percentage at fan-packed Rupp Arena is an astounding 90 percent.

The Wildcats package features an image of its home basketball court, Rupp Arena, and a prominent school logo on the front of the package. The back of the package showcases an image of the team cutting the net from the rim after a big victory as well as the famed school mascot.

“Kentucky basketball is proud to be featured on a Wheaties box and share this esteemed honor with the school, the fans, alumni and program supporters,” said Tubby Smith, the famed Kentucky Wildcats Head Coach who led Kentucky to five SEC tournament titles in the last seven years.”

The boxes are available now at supermarkets in Kentucky and the region surrounding Kentucky, Johnson said.
The picture on the box shows the Rupp Arena court and UK’s championship banners. NCAA rules prohibit a picture of a current player on the box.
“It’s to honor not a specific team, but the program,” said Jason Schlafer, UK’s assistant athletics director for marketing and licensing. “The picture on the box is pretty timeless.”
Schlafer said the deal with Wheaties is part of UK’s arrangement with the Collegiate Licensing Company, a company that administers the use of college logos. Wheaties paid CLC a royalty fee of $85,000 for the use of UK’s logo and images. UK will receive 85 percent of that fee.
Smith noted other benefits.
“It’s a great advertisement piece,” the UK coach said. “Besides that, (the cereal) is good for you.

I like that big standup next to Tubby. It would have been cool if they could have used the old court, the one that now sits between the arena and the mall, along with a picture of Rupp.

I suggest that WCN get a couple of cartons of these to auction at the Rathskeller, Rick. I want a carton for Central Ohio's Derby Party in May. I'm going to investigate how I might do that. Maybe at www.wheaties.com (http://www.wheaties.com).

LEXINGTON - Wheaties has a new Kentucky basketball-themed box for its cereal celebrating UK's seven national championships.

The new boxes will be available at stores in Kentucky."We've got to do our part to keep up the tradition of Kentucky basketball," Kentucky coach Tubby Smith said. "That's for sure."

The cereal that labels itself "The Breakfast of Champions" has honored other college programs in the past.

I bought mine at the Wal-Mart grocery, Cathy. They had a special display set up with them. I know you're on the other side of town but if one WM has them surely the rest will. I think Kroger has them, too.

Should be found at major supermarkets all over the state. I had my son look for them while he was in Lexington this weekend, so hopefully I have some on the way here.

Thanks. I have a co-worker that works part time at Wal-Mart. He is a big UL fan and doesn't like UK. I may ask him. There is a Wal-Mart close to me. I'm sure they will sell as fast as they are put on the shelves.

I hope the Wheaties box doesn't list 1959 as a NC for UK.
