I see in Smith's contract where this is a provision for a $1.5 million dollar Retention Bonus if he is still around April 3, 2007. And yet a bigger retention bonus, $2.5 million dollars if he is still around on April 3, 2011.
These "Retention Bonuses" are in addition to his salary, compensation for radio/tv shows, endorsements for shoes/athletic items, his basketball camps, and who knows what else?
Further, if he makes theFinal Four before 2011, it appears the contract is sweetened and automatically extended to 2013.
I am speechless. And quite frankly, if I were inTubby Smith's shoes, I wouldn't give a rat's behind how each of you felt about me. I would continue to do what I was doing and stashaway the money. (I hope I haven'toffended anyone, but nowhere in his contract does it say anything about keeping people who post on the WCN boardhappy).
Just something to think about thissad Sunday morning!

Tubby got that contract after the 03' season, and many thought that Mitch messed up. I think MB was afraid that Tubby would be a hot item, so he made sure that no one could beat UK's deal.
Right now, Tubby get's to live the life, "money for nuthin' and your chicks for free". There is no incentive now for Tubby to do the things he needs to do, to get this team back on top. And why should he? Would you? I sure wouldn't, if I had Tubby's bank account.

I figured that was the case. Besides, I have thicker skin than most, lol! Comes from being 50 years old and watching a lot of games during that 1/2 century!

Don't we all go to work every day for the money? Why do we expect Tubby to be any different? There have been many times throughout my work history( I refuse to call it a career) that my performance didn't warrant the salary that I was receiving, Did I go to the man in charge and say"I don't think that I am earning what you are paying me" NO! I probably was asking for more. MY point here is , regardless of what Tubby gets paid, this team isn't playing very well. I am by no means praising nor bashing Tubby, I just do not think that money is a factor in what is happening on the basketball court. GO CATS!!!!!!!!

I think money is a huge factor. I think Tubby got his payday at UK and he went soft. If money wasn't an issue, he'd still be at UGA. Why not? SEC school with good resources, great recruiting base, and if you win 20 games a year there, they name the gym after you. They loved Tubby in Athens.
He came to UK for the big payday and the glory. Don't forget, he leveraged interest from South Carolina when he was negotiating that huge contract with Mitch. Tubby even balked at a buyout clause and Mitch backed down.
If you negotiate a contract like Tubby's, you better be ready to deliver or ready to step aside. Joe B. was gentleman enough to step aside, I don't think Tubby will do the same.

Tubby was pushing for a major contract because Pitino got a big contract at UL. MB went a little crazy and made the guy the highest paid coach in the land and here we are.
I don't think that it is a lost cause. Even if Tubby doesn't leave, if he fails to turn this around, immediately, the noise from the fan base will grow and either he'll leave on his own or MB will be facing a revolt that may unseat him as well.

I just dont buy that! I cant begin to believe Tubby's work ethic is that bad. You dont get to the top of your profession(atleast the coaching profession) by not performing. Sorry I just dont buy into the argument that Tubby is satisfied simply because he has abig contract.
I am by no means happy with the situation this program is in but to insinuate Tubby is just happy with the money and doesnt care about a program that he is forever linked to is ridiculous.

You are welcome to disagree, of course. My point was that there is not much incentive for Tubby to work his tail off. The vast majority of his compensation is tied to longetivity, NOT to PERFORMANCE. His recruiting RESULTS seem uneven. His post-season performance has been less than stellar. My point is that there is really not a financial incentive for him to do better, because the contract doesn't require it. None of us know what is inside Tubby's head, or what his work ethic might be. But I know that I wouldn't pull TOO MANY all-nighters if I was guarranteed millions to just put in a normal day's work. SOme may be different, most are probably not. Just an opinion. I don't think my opinion is ridiculous, though.

It is good to see that MB's standard for making the Final Four is at least 1 every 13 years... :X IMO, it's just another example that he doesn't understand the expectations for an athletic program at this level.

I truley believe, if Tubby is the man that most of us think he is, that money is not really an issue here. You can't possibly tell me that Tubby has no incentive to perform well because he has a huge paycheck.... He is at the top of his profession. I can't seem to fanthom that he got there without working his a$$ off. My point is why would he stop working hard... because he gets paid a lot of money??? If so than he is a lot more immoral than i ever thought. I don't bellieve this is true however.
You all can express your opinion that Tubby isnot doing the RIGHT things, but to suggest that he has given up because of a large salary is OURAGEOUS!!
