As bad as this season has been, it still doesn't seem to match last year's team, u know? I mean, last season was just bad all-around, and was really the first bad team we've had since Team Turmoil. For some reason, I keep thinking that even though we ain't too hot now, "At least it ain't last season." Well, after some research, it appears these 2 teams aren't so different.
Last year's team went 22-13 overall, (11-8) in the conference. But at this point last season(2 games before the SEC tourney), we look strikingly similar. We were 18-10 overall, (8-6) in the conference. This year's team? 19-9 overall, (8-6) in the conference. Merely a game apart overall, with an equal conference record. Sad, you know?
Now, of course last season we had those blowout losses vs. Kansas, IU, and 2 by Florida. This season, we've only had 1 true blowout i can think of (vs. Memphis). But, last season we defeated 3 ranked teams: #13 W. Virginia, #4 UofL, and #11 Tennessee. Those were their ranks at the time we defeated them. Honestly, that's not all bad. 3 teams in the Top 15? Pretty solid. Then of course, we also lost to UNC, IU, Kansas, swept by Vandy(LOL...), 2 by UF, etc etc...
This season? We haven't defeated ONE single ranked opponent. That is just flat-out awful. I mean, are we even a tournament team right now? If I were on the committee, I'd say no, unless there were just a lot of teams w/o wins against the Top 25. If you can't defeat one ranked team all season, esp. when you've played a bunch of them, that's just not impressive at all. And although we had an 11-game winning streak(most vs. weak competition), we've also lost 4 of our last 5 games, including bad losses to UGA and ALA, both of whom are struggling for Tourney bids. We did defeat a bad LSU team(w/o Davis) and UT(w/o Lofton), but that's it. IU? They're fading fast. Hell, our best win of the year came against UofL, and that's when they played like...well...us. We have nothing impressive on our resume right now.
So which do you prefer? Wins vs. ranked teams but blowouts? Or no blowouts but no ranked wins? Either way, we ain't doin too hot this year, and we've gotta turn this around before we make a visit to the NIT. I love and support my Cats as much as anyone else, but this crap is a joke. It's time for our upperclassmen to step it up and pull us out of this rut, make us proud guys!
