View Full Version : Ramon Harris

I have tried to keep all of my recent posts and new threads to strictly basketball and stats, I don't want to get in to the Tubby battle or the he said/she said discussions.
I do, however, want to discuss basketball. What is the general consensus going in to the final regular season game on Ramon Harris?
He averaged 16.3 points, 13.1 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game his senior year and was "Mr. Basketball" in the state of Alaska. Everyone on the message boards seems to agree on one thing and they want players to appreciate the tradition and love to play for UK like Woo does and Harris did say upon signing with UK that it was a "dream come true" (Rivals.com).
Did he just join too late in the season to really build that chemistry and learn enough to have an immediate impact?
Just want to hear some thoughts, I think he appreciates UK basketball and I think he can be a contributer on this team at some point.
Just my humble opinion, any thoughts?

I think next season will really tell the tale on Ramon Harris. I agree with you; he probably just came in too late to really "gel" or be a factor this season. (Pure speculation on my part.)
He has shown some athleticism; something this team drastically needs. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do next season.

Well Ramon hasn't got much playing time here of late...........but I honestly think him coming in late and not getting to practice until Dec.15th might be a big part of it.....just my opinion.....hopefully after being able to practice with the team this summer and next fall it will make a difference..lets hope so

Bill Keightly told me that it was really just because he didn't come until late. He said he doesn't understand why he wasn't redshirted.

agreed............this year has been a waste for Ramon
Just as I posted in a previous thread, I believe Ramon should have been redshirted. This year has been a waste from him. Getting a few minutes here and there, hopefully, has been a positive experience for him.
I think he shows a lot of athleticism though. That's evident by the way he dunks the basketball. But I've seen too little of him to be able to know what type of a ball player he is or is going to be. I don't even remember him taking a jumpshot this season.
Plus, unless something happens and Tubby decides to go really deep with his rotation for the tournament, we may not see him at all for the rest of the season.

I still think Ramon will be a good player,,I agree he should have been redshirted,,but he is very athletic, seems to have a good attitude from what I've seen and read about him, hopefully he as well as the rest will vastly improve next year.

I bet Ramon gets it done in practice. I bet he's one of the three or four most effective players out there.
Why?
Because he's one of the few athletes on this team.
Tubby may have become enamored with his athleticism and figured that he could do something in game situations. The problem is almost everyone on our schedule is more athletic than we are; other teams can shut Ramon Harris down, whereas Harris going against Bobby Perry is probably a push.
In the practice I watched, Eric Allen was one of the two or three best players on the floor.
He was also one of the most athletic.
Our lack of athleticism skews things when you watch this bunch in practice. And this is one reason we get knocked back on our heels every time we play a really athletic team.
We need some runners and jumpers in the mix at UK. Until we have them, we're going to continue to struggle guarding and keeping up with the Derek Byars and Corey Brewers of the world.

Who would you consider athletic players on our team now,, and who would you consider non-athletic?

I think we have athletes on this team. Just not athletes in the front court, especially at the 4.
Bradley, Morris, Crawford, Meeks, Porter, Jasperect. are all athletes, imo.
But all of them, except Morris, play the 1 or 2, and maybe the 3.
When Perry, Orbzut, and Thomas are the athletes you have at your 4 and 5 positions, then you're in trouble.
Just my opinion, but I'm no expert. I'd take Will's word over mine, lol.

I define "athletes" as strong runners and jumpers.
Using that definition, the only real athlete we've got is Jodie Meeks.
Joe can jump and he's strong, but he's slow.
Perry Stevenson can run the court and jump, but he's weak.
Derrick Jasper can leap, but he's slow of foot.
Ramel is quick, but he's not a jumper and he's small of frame.
Bobby and Sheray are Bobby and Sheray.
Randolph has some athleticism but you'd never know it.
And so on.
I think it's our biggest problem: our lack of athletes and play-makers. Notice that we never can take people to the basket off the dribble. Yet we try to do that quite a bit as evidenced by the fact that we're often standing 30 feet from the basket, dribbling.
We just don't have the speed or the jumping ability to be a very good team off the bounce. And we don't have the strength to be a punishing team down low.
All facets of our game are hurt, in the end, by genetics.

All freshmen have a hard time learning the system well enough to earn playing time at UK, coming in at mid season gives you no chance. Whether it was his choice or not, a red shirt year would have been very beneficial.

Complicating this whole situation is that Harris played in Alaska. Not exactly a hoops-hotbed nationally. I once heard he got 40 rebounds against two Eskimos and 3 penguins. Tends to skew the stat sheet.
Seriously, who really knows what Ramon Harris can give us down the road. We don't know, Tubby doesn't know, Harris probably doesn't know. He appears to be athletic enough to earn time at the 3 next season, but only time will tell.
[Yes, all you zoologists, I know penguins live in the Antarctic, not the Arctic, so no angry pm's or links to Happy Feet videos on YouTube. Thanks in advance!]

I have asked this question about Harris before, but never got an answer. . . Does anyone know the rules on redshirting. Since Harris came 2nd semester, would a redshirt mean he couldn't play until 2nd semester of next season? Also, anything to the thought that a redshirt for half the season could be seen as "wasting" a redshirt? You never really know what might happen, right?

Kids from Alaska are always hard to read. As other posters have said, the basketball talent there isn't very deep. Heck, I'm not sure there's even that many high schools there that could put a legitimate team on the floor.
You may end up with a Trajan Langdon.
you may end up with a Carlos Boozer.
But you could say the same about any small basketball community.

I remember Jared Carter saying he is glad he did not redshirt his freshman year...I wonder if Ramon did/did not want to redshirt.

Didn't you hear? Harris catches Salmon in his mouth jumping upstream.
Where he wades patiently for them.
