Have you ever had an urge, to do something or buy something, that seemingly comes from nowhere and is completely unexplainable?

I want to buy a tuba. A real tuba. One of the big ones, too.

I want to sit on my front porch playing one of those standard tuba walking bass lines.

And I have no idea why.

Get the Tuba.

We had a slide trombone in the housewhen I was a kid, I've always wanted to get another one and see what kind of noise I could make on it.

Have you ever had a sudden, unexplainable urge completely squashed because of a price tag?

Just do an ebay search for a tuba. One of the big ones. You'll see what I mean.

UedK, how much are slide trombones going for these days?

Per Ebay, you can get into a trombone for a couple hundred bucks. The big Susaphone Tuba is another story. Start saving your money of you want to follow your dreams. LOL

I do have a very nice old silver flute that needs a complete overhall. Back in the crazyseventies a guy traded me for it for a coffee tableart book about Salvadore Dali.

Littlemeyer, if you're feeling that strongly about it, BUY IT!:thumbup

If you don't, you'll always be asking yourself: "What if?"

And, have you checked with the local school systems to see if they have used but still good instruments they'd be willing to part with? You might be surprised.

I always wondered about why anybody would want to play a tuba. As you say, they cost a lot, they're heavy, and the trumpet players get all the cool solos. But, I guarantee that if you're looking for attention, playing one on your front porch will do the trick.:)

It's not really that I'm looking for attention. Rather, I'm looking to embarrass my wife. I can just imagine the talk around town.

"You know her husband, right? The tuba guy?"

"Oh. Him."

Of course, I could end up facing the wrath of the neighborhood kids who, for some reason, don't think a middle-aged bald guy playing the tuba on the front porch is "cool". Kids these days...:?

Yesterday my wife and I were in a youth center basement and I found an "air soft" pellet gun.I had an urge to shoot her in the butt. That was not a good idea.

I'm sorry to hear about your tubosis.

The scientific consensus is, of course, rather bleak.

(Bleak, as in the sound a tuba makes when a dilettante first applies lips and attempts to make a pleasant sound come out of ....yep.....a tuba, but it's more like bleeeeeeak.)

Seek help.

The consensus agrees that there is no known cure for the sudden urge to purchase a tuba, unless you count the delaying effects of viagra, of course....or, if you're on a budget, (or actually saving for ...I don't know, a tuba for instance?), you can just mix equal parts of fix-a-flat with miracle grow.

Unconfirmed reports from the fields are hard, sorry, difficult to verify, but show promise.

There is however, total agreement from the consensus regarding the good news and bad news.....
First, the good news is....you have 24 hours to live.
The bad news is.....

we should have told you yesterday.

 Just like the buffalo chicken tenders I ate at the Rathskellar, the urge to buy a tuba has passed.

Now I'm thinkin' drum set. Five piece. Hi-hat, two crash, and a ride.

It'll take a lot of boxes, and some extra manpower (which won't be a problem, because we will have a new daughter next year), but I'll bring the drum set to Catlanta.

And yes. We will rock. :thumbup

Rent one for a month. You may find at the end of the month that you have another completely different unexplainable urge.

Yeah but my urges usually involve going to 7/11 for an ice cream cone...

Rent a tuba for a month.

Then do as Bob Uecker did whilst with the Milwaukee Braves eons ago.

Prior to a home game, a local high school band had been practicing the National Anthem. They quit so the team could have batting practice. The larger instruments were left along the wall to be retrieved later.

Uecker decides he's going to take one of the tubas and shag fly balls during BP.

Had to pony up to the student for a new tuba to replace the one with multiple baseball dents in it.

I remember that story from his book. Thanks for reminding me of that.
