I'm not sure who wrote this, but I found it on Facebook and thought you all would find it interesting.
"During high school, a young man needed some extra cash. He found a job as a dishwasher at a local five-star restaurant. During his time washing dishes, he became good friends with the restaurant’s owner. After he washed dishes for a few months, he really started to dislike being in the kitchen all night. His admiration for the restaurant’s owner was the only reason he continued to work at a job he didn’t like. About a year later, the owner decided to sell his five-star restaurant. The owner, who this young man greatly admired, decided he’d try his hand in another business and bought a construction company. Thankfully, this five-star restaurant stayed open. Unfortunately, not many people liked the new owner.
Because the first owner left, the young man decided to jump at an opportunity to advance and became a waiter at Denny’s. Sure, Denny’s isn’t a great place to eat, but it’s better than washing dishes. After a couple months of great service at Denny’s, he found another opportunity to advance! An Olive Garden, which is a pretty good restaurant, was being built nearby and he was hired as a waiter. He did a great job of serving the pasta, salad, and breadsticks. He was rewarded by being named employee of the month in two consecutive years! Unfortunately, his work isn't fully appreciated by the local people because not many like Italian food! Everyone still loves the five-star restaurant where he used to wash dishes! In fact, the five-star restaurant has won "Restaurant of the Year" seven times!
While at work one day, the young man was approached by the current owner of the five-star restaurant. This man said, “Son, I’ve been watching your performance at work for quite some time. I’m getting old and working at this busy restaurant is taking its toll on me”. He listened intently as the man continued, “I’m leaving my job. I found a less stressful position at a restaurant in Minnesota.” The young man realized why he was being told this information. It was his time to take the reigns. This news made him ecstatic and he couldn’t think of any reason to turn down this opportunity!
This was all happening on a seemingly mundane Thursday. After a slight hesitation, the young man said, “Please allow me to finish working this week here at Olive Garden. After this week is over, I would be thrilled to accept your offer and take ownership of the five-star restaurant”. After work on Friday, he notified his boss that he would be leaving. His boss was shocked. In a way, he wanted to keep the young man at Olive Garden because he had done such a great job there. But in the end, but he was happy for the young man because he knew he was leaving for a better job. As the young man walked out to his car, he ran into his mentor, the first owner of the five-star restaurant. As he approached the young man, he said “I heard the big news, kid! I’m happy for you!” It was very encouraging to have his blessing, but the young man inquired “Do you have any advice for me?” The man simply smiled and said, “Don’t worry…you will do great, Billy”.
Over the next several years, the owner of the great five-star restaurant, “Billy the Kid”, received several more “Restaurant of the Year” awards. It was a match made in Heaven. His unparalleled success allowed him to drop the title “Billy the Kid”, but only to retire, and go down in history as “Billy the Great”. Welcome to the University of Kentucky, Coach Donovan.
(Five-star restaurant – played by UK, Olive Garden – played by UF, Denny’s - played by Marshall, Dishwasher position – Billy as an assistant, Five-star restaurant’s first owner – Pitino, Five-star restaurant’s second owner – Tubby, Focus of the story – Billy Donovan)
For the record, the five-star restaurant’s first owner’s construction business didn’t work out. He quickly returned to the restaurant business. Unfortunately, he was only able to open a four-star restaurant that was approximately an hour away. He openly admits his mistake and often times wishes he could return to the five-star restaurant. He accurately claims that the five-star restaurant is the “Roman Empire of the Restaurant Business”.
Bring on Billy!
