View Full Version : Lets turn back the clock to the point where Pitino returned on Papa Johns jet...

Lets turn back the clock to that glorious day when Pitino was returning to Kentucky on Papa Johns jet. Back when Terry Meiners was applying a thick coat of lubricant to his nose prior to inserting it firmly in Ricks butt. News copter 11 followed the procession from the air as Pitino's white Bronco moved down I65 to the "Welcome the Savior" press conference. These were grand times. The expectation was for 1 year of rebuilding and then National Championships unseen since the days of John Wooden's UCLA Bruins knocked them down one after another after another.
Even the early '80's under Denny Crum would be NOTHING compared to what was just on the horizon. Denny Crum, remember him? He was the guy in the room with the dagger in his back. You know, the dagger with Tom Jurich's finger prints on it. Despite that nasty little dumping of a HOF coach, these were to be high times. The cards were to be heard from again by gawd.
Fast forward.....
It's February 2006. The 5th year of the mightyPitino reign and $10-million in salary later....yetits a two game losing streak to big brother and the cards are not to be found in the Top-20 polls. There is serious talk even among it's hard core fans that an NIT bid is a distinct possibility.
It wasn't supposed to be this way. Denny's players are long gone and Pitino has his players and his system firmly in place. Yet the last 5 games the team has not scored over 60 points. He's the same offensive genius but but the outcome is not quite the same. No McCarty No Delk No Mercer No Walker No Mashburn no way it was supposed to be like this.
Got Pitino?
Was this what you expected when Pitino rode into Louisville on that jack-*** Terry Meiners? What say you? Our fans and theirs, I'd love to know.

I was living in Louisville at the time and I know that their fans expected a ring by the 5th year. They thought that it would take 1 year to get Crum's leftovers into shape and that 3 recruiting classes later and they'd be ready to enter the NBA.
As I stated the other day, UL thought that they were hiring the Pitino who coached at UK, instead they got the shell of the man who coached the Celtics.
Sure, they went to the Final Four last year and that's an achievement however it was a Cinderella run and they were supposed to be a dominating program by now. Dominating programs don't have "cinderella" runs.
Here we are in year 5 and Pitino has come full circle, he took a team to the Final Four and now has them close to where he found them. The style of play that made him famous (full court press & 3 pt baskets) is no more and the game is starting to pass him by. He's great at motivating players and can dominate when his talent level is VASTLY superior but most coaches can do that. The problem is when he doesn't have those things, his gimmicks are gone and he doesn't have the game coaching skills to aide his team in overcoming that adversity.
The funny thing is that Pitino seems to be mirroring Crum in his latter years. Crum came to Louisville with an exciting new style, took on the college basketball world and achieved a great deal of success... then the game started to pass him by. IMO, Pitino may not be over yet but when he boared a plane from Lexington to Boston, he lost something, he went over that hump and the best of his career is behind him.

You all wish Pitino was all washed up. Lots of freshmen. lots of injuries, new assisstant coaches, and having one senior who is always injured and one junior who is not the leadership type means struggles. I still think this team will put a "what in the world" game out of their posterior and beat somebody far better than them.
P.S. Anybody that has Tubby for a coach does NOT have room to talk about a coach letting the game pass him by.

As you said and LilBro's fans failed to believe....Kentucky made Pitino. He was a good coach and was able to recruit because of UK.
Now all of his flaws as a poor bench coach are coming to light. Everybody has players now and there are a lot of good coaches now.
WHat Pitino does best is SELF PROMOTION. He's not the same guy because he is not at the same school.
What little bro got was a FAILED NBA COACH.... not the UK Pitino.
Maybe now they will start to see that.

Why does the defense of Pitino always turn into an attack on Tubby?
Can you really say that as a Cardinal fan that you're satisfied with Pitino's performance?
You can point to incoming freshmen but I've been hearing that story for 3-4 years from Card fans.
Lots of injuries? I remember when Derek Anderson went down in '97 and I don't recall Pitino out there complaining about injuries. He said on his show that you couldn't use that as an excuse, that the other players had to step up their game that much more and that we were still going to win.
I bet you wish you had THAT Pitino on your bench this year... instead you got the guy saying "Pervis Ellison isn't walking through that door..."
What's this with "new assistant coaches"? When did that become an excuse? Are they learning on the job? I mean c'mon, if they need a season or two to learn their jobs, what were they hired for?
I don't know if the game passed Pitino by or if people just saw that the Emperor had no clothes but he's a different person, a different coach and he's yet to match the same level of success and I doubt that he ever will.
I will say this about Cardinal fans. I know there's a core bunch out there that still believe that Crum would've made another run... we'll see if history repeats itself.

Spin , spin , spin Uofhell. Boy Pitino is rubbing off on you guys big time. Pitino in his fifth year at UL and Pitino in his fifth year at UK are no comparison. The game has changed too much and there is too much parity for him to have dominating teams like he did at UK. He never made excuses at UK. That is just proof how far he's fallen. Wonder what the Courier will come up with tomorrow.

Y'all make me wonder sometimes....
Who were the particpants in the final four last year?
I don't like him. Don't want him back. Agree that he won't succeed at UofL like he did at UK. Continue to be amazed at the media love he gets. But he's a good coach.
And this, I guess, is where I differ from many UK fans....
I like UofL having a good strong program. It's not a rivalry otherwise. Yes... even if it means they beat us once in a while.

Excellent question.
If you ask it outside the border of Kentucky there will be very few who could answer it. They will recall that UNC won it all and possibly that they beat IL in the final.
Beyond that ityou have a trivia question worthy of big bucks and a "phone a friend" on "Who want's to be a Millionaire." TheF4 losers are simply 3rd place with a spot on a cool T-Shirt.
As I've said before....lil bro won their overtime game and we lost ours. That is the only difference.
BTW....do you remember who won our game in freedom hall last year? I do. Dont even need to ask the audience.

I hate to generalize but based on my experience with UK fans, I see 3 tiers.
1st Tier - Those who live in Louisville
These people have to deal with a very biased media and of course work with the UL fans that recite everything Pitino. It started the day that he returned in a very "OJ Simpson like" manner and has only gotten worse. It's ironic because when they recite his accomplishments... they sorta inherently become temporary UK fans:shock:without realizing it. The fans in Louisville have to put up with a lot and it creates a great deal of contempt and unfortunately some it gets personal and they lose sight that it's just entertainment. You can find a few posters here that, IMO, meet that description. The fans in this group look at it as a zero sum game, that we're not truly up unless UL is definitely down.
2nd Tier - Those who live in the state
These fans, IMO, just don't care for the city of Louisville and especially the Cardinals. They've been raised to believe that those who live in the city look down on them and would be happy if the state legislature voted them out of the state, as long as they'll continue paying for their roads, etc. Again, the fans in this group look at it as a zero sum game, that we're not truly up unless UL is definitely down.
3rd Tier - Those who live outside of the state
Fans outside of the state lack a full appreciation for the intense media focus on Pitino and the Cards and do not understand the contempt that the fans have for each other. This group of fans look at Duke & UNC and wish that the schools could have a similar rivalry. The fans in this group believe that the programs feed off of each other and that as one strengthens it can only improve the other program.
This is definitely a generalization and does not apply to all fans in the three categories however since I've experienced #1 and #3 and have a lot of friends who are in #2, it's what I've experienced.

Sorry Rick but your football team and to a degree your basketball team built its "reputation" on the CUSAweenies. You have completed one disappointing Big Least Football season (3rd place) and just half of a Big East Basketball season...likely 10th place or worse.... so don't come around here talking conference smack. Your unrealistic Commuter College expectations cause Jurich to push you into something you really were never built to accomplish, that being a big-time conference upper echelon player. Most UL fans are disappointed with this year's team that is for sure. They did have high expectations of success. I don't think we will be getting rid of Pitino any time soon though.
You can try to convinve yourselves UK is still superior, it is a free country. We know better though don't we? Uk has been backsliding under the might Barnhardt administraton. Jurich is building UL into a powerhouse. Enjoy, we do.

I never said that Pitino can't motivate with the best of them but there's little doubt that he's lost the Mojo that he enjoyed so much in Lexington. The factis that in Year 5, the first team that's all of his choosing, it's looking like you're NIT bound. I think there's a little bit of wishful thinking going on, but not by UK fans.
Also, I don't think that you'll get rid of Pitino anytime soon. You guys held onto Crum for a decade past his prime... history will likely repeat itself. Cardinal fans have demonstrated to put up with several lackluster seasons before demanding better and even then there's a core group who pine to give the coach another chance. UK fans are often too fanatical but the upside is that would never happen here. If we end up in the NIT, there will be calls for change.
I would agree that Jurich is a better AD however I think that he has to be disappointed with this season. The basketball program is only slightly better then where Crum left it and the football program, when it's not fighting off coaching rumors, is falling below expectations in the league it was supposed to dominate.

Spin it any way you want. Our athletic programs have never been in better shape.
Bad call away from possibly tying UL and winning the football game! Men's baseball swept UL last season. UK women's basketball just upset #1 team in the country. Mens basketball is on a 2 game winning string against UL and has a huge margin in the series. Men's and women's tennis and golf are nationally ranked PLUS UK athletics teams just finished 1st in SEC in academics. OH and the women's volleyball team made it to the NCAA for the first time since 1993. Didn't we just beat UL in swimming?? Amen. Unfortunately the media hype machine that creates all the smoke about Jurich and Company have convince our own fans that MB is second to TJ. That is a load of crap IMHO. The football program is in great shape and will be routinely beating the crap out of little brother and not just losing to them by a fumble on the one yard line.
Don't forget that MB stole TJ's lunch on the WHAS deal. He won the argument over us being able to schedule our home games when it is in our own best interest which made the media and TJ whine like a little beotch.
Facts are that MB has been winning the battleof the AD's for a couple years now.

You guys are missing my point. The freshmen excuse just doesn't cut it anymore. If Pitino truely had all of the big-time recruits he claims, then they should be able to contribute right away. What I am saying is that while youth certainly is a factor, it is not as big of a discrepancy as it used to be. Just because there are a few examples of freshmen on winning teams years ago doesn't make it the norm. The norm is guys like Hansborough, Shaun Williams, Carmelo coming in and being immediate impact players.

Sorry Rick but your football team and to a degree your basketball team built its "reputation" on the CUSAweenies.
This coming from a basketball school playing in a football conference. I didn't waste my time reading half the posts here so sorry if I repeat anybody. It's just funny how Suk fans say Pitino is washed up when he just took our program from 12-20 to the Final Four in 4 years. In Pitino's 5th year at Suk he lost 7 games and was bounced in the round of 32. Not exactly anything to write home about. Keep telling yourselves what you need to buy time/make it feel better. But you and I both know we wouldn't trade him for ANY other college coach in the country....especially one that has ruined everything Pitino did for Suk. Make it back to the Final Four and then talk. You all spend more time and energy talking about our coach (the one you want back) than your own, who has failed to take you back to the FF in 8 years.
BTW, Pitino made Suk. If that weren't the case then why do you suck so bad now? You are squeaking my mid major talent. You suck.

NOknees, he made us wear blue-jean denim uniforms in year 6. Are you all so tied to our history that you expect new denim uni's next year. Will that make you happy too. You got your Padgett to duplicate our Scott Padgett. A Muhammed to dupe our Nazi.
Can you all do anything for yourself without "jocking us" at every step? Do you have your own tradition or are you just living through us? Was Pitino 89 thru 97at UK really just "The University of Louisville: The Lexington years."
You guys need to find your own history to tap from and leave ours alone.

I want NO association with your crooked program, but thanks anyway. I am comparing his accomplishments...not the programs. I use his accomplishments from his tenure at Suk because they are so similar to his years here. Had Pitino played in the Big East in his years at Suk, an NIT would be just as likely. Let me reiterate, I want nothing to do with a program that bought it history.

Puhleeeze! You all are a bunch of Wannabees. Always have been and always will be.
There is little or no similarity to what UK brought Pitino. Do you really think in year 5 that we were in 12th place in our conference and headed for the NIT?
The only similarity is 5 guys dribbling a ball on a 94' wooden floor. The similarity ends there.

Comparing playing in a football conference to playing in the greatest conference ever assembled in the history of college basketball is a complete joke to say the least. No comparison. We are throwing the exact same argument you used against us in C-USA. Deal with it because it will never go away. You always be beating up on a bunch of football first schools. This is why you flame out every year and haven't been to the Final FOur in 8 years.

Yeah, those 4 wins are doing a whole hell of a lot for you. They bought you one single vote. That's what you get when you play a bunch of nobodies. Still ranked ahead of you....play somebody.

That really tells how terrible UK is and how far they have fallen. When Louisville loses the amount of games that we have here in the last few weeks and UK wins x amount of games in a row and UK is still ranked behind Louisville. I would feel disgraced to be a UK fan when you're still ranked behind a team that's lost so many in a row. You guys are being ranked similar to how mid major teams are ranked.
