Here we are on the doorstep of the next great era in Kentucky Basketball. Alot has been said and dissected over the last week. So what is your list at this point?
Donavan - He would put the Basket back in theball at UK.
D'antoni - Long shot but man that would be fun.
Grant - Long shot but not for the same reason as D'antoni.
Barnes - Not on my list originally but the more I read about him the moreI think he could be very successful at UK.
Ford - Not as much of a long shot as Grant probably but still out there a bit. This, atleast for me, would be a very exciting hire.
Pitino - He says he isnt interested but I would still take him.
The only coach removed from my list is Calipari. Just not a good fit in my opinion. Sure he would come and win games but I dont see him as a consistentchampionship coach.

My top three as soon as I heard that Tubby Smith was leaving were: Donovan, Gillispie, Calipari.
Donovan and Gillispie are still #1 and #2 by a large margin, but I haven't completely scratched Calipari. I'm not crazy about Barnes, but like you, the more I read about him the more I see how it could be an entertaining option.
Jay Wright is right there with Barnes on my list. Not crazy about it, but it could work.
Beyond that, I'd rather take a shot with Pelphrey or Ford before going after other names being mentioned. (Crean and Few, specifically.)

Rick Barnes is a horrible in game coach. Horrible.

Would it be worth sacrificing one thing for the other:question

My thoughts and list are exactly the same as Littlemeyer.
Donovan - Gillespie - Calipari.
I don't see how it would get past either Gillespie or Calipari. Either of those guys will take this job in a heartbeat, I don't care what their current contract situation is.

Tell us what excites you about Travis Ford? From what I hear he is a very realistic plan B.

Not to me. He has had amazing recruiting classes at Texas and can't get it going there. He looks like a deer in the head lights on the sideline. If he were just an OK game coach it would be one thing, but he looks over matched in almost all games I've seen them play.

You can't be successful without having BOTH!

Makes one wonder why Texas so irresponsibly pays him what they do. Sounds like he's not worth a damn and should be coaching high school ball somewheres.

I originally wanted Donovan first, then Calipari my second. I have since cooled on Calipari (Although I would still like to have him, just after Billy G) Now I would like Gilespie if we cant get Donovan. I dont think I need to go any lower than that because if Billy D dont take it, Billy G will, IMO.
I know people will say he just signed a new contract and all, but to me that doesn't mean anything unless there is some big buyout.

Well he is IMO, a pretty decent in game coach. He seems to have the fire in his belly to get the job done. He has the confidence that any UK coach needs. Uptempo style of play.Like I said its a long shot but I would take a chance with him beforeI would hire a Crean or a Few.

I've seen him get his *** handed to him too many times, but thanks for the sarcasm. Check out games this year if you don't believe me... Michigan State (Tom Izzo), Tennessee (Bruce Pearl), Kansas (Bill Self), USC (Tim Floyd), Gonzaga (Mark Few), Texas A&M (Billy Gillispie), and Villanova (Jay Wright). I list the coaches because they all out coached him head to head this year, and because I would take any of them over Barnes. Just watching the USC game alone was telling. USC put a small, quick guy on Durant. Did Texas post him to take advantage of the 6 INCH height advantage? Not once. Again, deer in the head lights was all that I saw.

Actually, A&M offered him an extension but BG stated that he wanted to wait to see what happens with the UK job.
So BG is still an option I suppose

All I'm saying is Texas is paying him nearly 2 mil per year for a reason..................they can't be the only dumbaces to think he's worth it.

LOL In that regard, I guess I just mean to say that I hope we're not as stupid as Texas. In other newsregarding overpaid employees, I've been on thisboard for approximately 5 of the 6 hours I've been at work today.

I don't think it's fair to judge Barnes by his team looking lost this year. This is a team that started 4 freshmen and a sophomore, and went to two more freshman and sophomore off the bench. None of their juniors of seniors (of which they have 3, combined) averaged 8 minutes a game. So Texas didn't have the Green, Terry, Jamar Butler, or Ron Lewis type players that UNC and Ohio State were able to lean on to accompany their youth.
To me, then, it seems unfair to criticize them for looking lost, especially for games just as the season was starting (Mich St. and Gonzaga), or against teams like Kansas, who are loads more talented and experienced. To get a 4 seed as Texas did, with that little experience, is an unbelievable accomplishment.
What worries me more, and where I do agree with Craig, is what we've seen in past years. Stuff like last year when they were just slapped around by Duke and Tennessee back to back, with a team that was both talented and experienced. That shouldn't happen.
Barnes has done a great job getting talent and improving it, but he hasn't quite made the pieces fit the way they should. For some reason, he can't assemble all the necessary parts at the right time.
Still, in the last five years, Barnes has produced a final four and an elite eight, which is tough to argue with.

We've already set the bar at Kentucky that this will not get it done. Five of his nine seasons at Texas have ended in the first or second round. While I enjoy the way Barnes can recruit, I'm of the belief that he is clearly a step down from what we had and would not make things much better.

All of the above is true...
I have seen Barnes quite a bit this year....
One thing...it is exciting to be at the beginning of a new UK era....
but it would be a downer...BIG TIME...if Barnes got the job.
Sorry to be repetitive, but remember Leftty Drisell? At Maryland, he used to have awesome talent, and his teams were consistently out coached. Poor lefty. I used to feel sorry for them....always knowing they were gonna choke.
Barnes is not even as fun to listen to as Lefty was either.
I really hope he's not the "one", and would take almost any coach over him.
