Yeah, getting a guy who was a HIGH SCHOOL coach just 14 years ago, over a guy who just won his second NCAA title in a row, is a real coup.

Smart move, Mitch.

Billy "The Other Guy" Gillespie.

I forgot since I don't watch UL play. But my memory is coming back. :ggrin:

Yeah, I recall an A&M team with 2 seniors, a junior, and 2 sophomores, let a freshman run cirlces around them...all while the inside game sat on the bench. Caracter played 7 minutes and Padgett 18 minues. And Louisville loses by 3???

No wonder Billy left, A&M will be starting over next season. Guess it's better to start over with an extra mill or two in your pocket.

He was coaching high school just 14 years ago.

Mitch really did a 180 on this one. From a retiree, to a greenhorn.

Yeah, he beat UofL. I guess that's the standard Mitch used to hire him.

Don't worry.....in 2009 when it has been 23 years, UL will still be sitting on 2 NCAA Titles.

I hope so too. But it looks as if Beasley may be transferring since Huggy left K-State. Ugh, yet another McD's AA top 10 5 star player that would be eligible next season??? Not to mention the Lance Thomas rumors. Has there ever been a starting line up of 5 McD's AA's on one team?

You might as well ship them the trophy.:dmad:

If you think about it him being a high school coach 14 years ago is a testament to his coaching ability.

He went from there to a juco for a year, then an assistant coach under Bill Self where he was a noted recruiting force. Then he was so good there that UTEP grabbed him. While at UTEP he turned that program around and took them to a NCAA Tournament which at UTEP is a great accomplishment. Then he moved on to UTAM and you saw the results there this year in the tournament. Then add in that he was getting a 5 STAR recruit to come to UTAM next year (which just proves his recruiting ability). He is a up and comer and I like the move personally. Young coach with a lot of buzz around him.

Seriously, I'm glad you guys got someone you like, even if it's not the REAL guy you wanted, but you are UK! Mitch goes out and hires a guy whose best NCAA run was this season...a Sweet Sixteen. No Final Four or NCAA Championship experience.

He may be a great hire, then again, he may be someone who cannot handle the pressure and folds like a lawn chair.

He has almost the same Tournament record as Slick Rick over the past 5 years outside of that one final four year he has been there as many times as Rick and with about the same results. Only he did it at UTEP and Texas A&M.
