I just found out that five years ago, Billy G was in the running for the University of Evansville job and was beat out by Steve Merfeld. Merfeld was just fired by UE after five years of lackluster basketball. And Billy G. ? Well I think we know that story.

There's quite often a lot of politics that goes on with job candidates.....whether it be a head coaching position or a job at the 7-11.

More often than not those very same politics cost schools, businesses, etc. the better candidate.

Wow, I live near Owensboro, and did not know that. Says something for his drive and the American spirit.

If you think there's politics in Coaching.........you should try law enforcement.

Thanks for sharing, UKSam. Too, having lived less than an hour from Evansville for almost thirty years, I find that particularly interesting. :DHmmm. I wonder how the University of Evansville athletic director is doing (or feeling ) these days. :)

If you are in Law Enforcement and don't know what I'm talking about.........then you must be BRASS. :ggrin:

Nice to see another officer that's a UK fan. Not many here in Berea, KY are real fans.

Shoot Sam, guess I've been gone for a while. I figured the Coach at U of E was still Jim Crews. :ggrin:

Nice comparison though, pretty darn interesting!

My boss lives across the street from Steve Merfeld. My boss is a big IU fan and has joked many times since Tubby leftthat he has seen Merfeld out in his yard, and that he would stop and let him know about the UK vacancy if I would like.

I haven't seen the UE Purple Aces in the big dance lately, how are they doing?

Maybe you missed the sarcasm. But yes I am brass. However I chose to go back to third shift, become a creature of the night..............where the brass does not have to be as polished.

Curly, Aces have been playing above 500 but they have had a lot of things against them. Style of play was slower than ours. Recruitment to UE is hard. They are one of the smallest DI schools and offer limited majors and tough academics. Oh yeah they play in the "Valley"

BTW Curly, It's getting time for Proms and Spring Formals. Need a date?

Jim Crews bolted for Army years ago and Steve Merfeld was brought in in 2002 after pulling off the 15 seed over 2 seed shocker with Hampton over Iowa State. It looked to be a good hire, just never materialized, but lets face it, UE basketball will never ever be close to what it once was a long time ago. Its impossible to win there now.

:ggrin: I guess it is getting about that time! LMK if your date comes down with pneumonia.

LOL

Thanks for the update on UE. Sad, because they used to be pretty decent and exciting, back when they had Scot Haffner!

Ah the good old days of running into the county sheriffs in the middle of the night at a gorey car wreck scene. Tell my friends at German Township Volunteer Fire Dept. that I said "hello"!

I still think that I'd prefer day shift. Too many domestic situations in the evening for my patience. And everyone knows that I avoid "domestic" situations all together! ;)

AAAAhhh....... I was being sarcastic also.....I miss the job....just not the bullcrap visits to IA over stupid stuff. I got sick of being guilty until proven innocent.

P.S. I noticed on the career thread that you were an LT :D

Heck my date left the country. Talk about being stood up. Do you realize that was Spring of 1987?It's funny how we lose contact and meet about once every decade.
