Just saw this and I gotta say, I love it. For us KY fans, it'll be easier to keep tabs on him instead of some lowly team. The Arkansas/UK games has just got much more interesting!

I'm happy for John. It's a great opportunity. It'll certainly add more spice to our games with the Hogs!

I'm really happy for Pelph to get a job at a "BCS" conference school, but I was hoping he'd land one outside the SEC. I'm not going to like having to root against him at least once a year.
I just hope he doesn't become to Billy Gillispie what Billy Donovan was to Tubby Smith: the young guy that was a lot of people's second choice for the job that the UK coach is constantly compared to.

Great news for John. He deserves it. I'll be an Arkansas fan for every game except a couple. It'll be fun to see him back in Rupp again. Hey, where do you thinkArkansas will be 9 years from now..........

My sources (and they are reliable) tell me that Billy Donavan will announce Monday at 3.30 that he will step down as head coach at Florida and join John Pelphrey's staff at Arkansas as associate coach. He mentioned something about being "born again", and the "woooo pig sooie" chant is alot cooler than the gator chomp. It's a done deal boys and girls, trust me on this one.

This is awesome to hear! John will succeed at Arkansas, I think. That team, assuming they keep everyone they had last season, will be in the top half of the SEC next season.

While I have been following WCN for a long time this is my first post. Want to congratulate John on being the new head coach of Arkansas. We welcome you back with open arms to the SEC. Unfortunately now I have to root for the Hawgs....

I don't know in which direction your fear may lie, but I have mixed feeling too. I wish the best for Pelphery but he seems to be going into a storm. The entire Arkansas athletic department looks to be in termoil.

I absolutely agree with UedK about the mixed emotions. He has a tough road ahead of him and I hope that he surrounds himself with good assistants and is patient with the turn around that Arkansas needs. Isn't it great to see one of our Unforgettables doing such great things!

Wonder how well he'll do in Kentucky, in regards to recruiting ? We'll he go after players like Preston Knowles or Steffphon Pettigrew ?

I think John is going to suffer there for a couple of years. That program has some real problems.

A big Cograts to John. I wish him all the luck in the world. I think he is ready for a job like this and will do well. Like others, I too have a concern about it being Arkansas but I am sure they are correcting things there. I think John will put a quality product on the court and give us a good game each year. Hopefully not too good. :)

If he has some level of success, however, it will be good for UK fans. The only way for John to ever be considered as a coach at UK is for him to make a name for himself at another program. Ark could provide him with such an opportunity, assuming they are patient and realize the mess he is inheriting.

Pure speculation here, but perhaps those problems were leadership-related. Pelphrey may be able to straighten things out a bit.
I'm excited for Pelphrey and wish him well in all but one game (at least) per season. :thumbup

Well, it's definitely a gamble.
But Ole Miss made a gamble last year when they hired Andy Kennedy, a guy who'd had only one year of head coaching experience and who'd never been to the NCAA Tournament. (Granted, Ole Miss is not Arkansas.) That gamble definitely paid off.
And it's not like Arkansas had their pick. There are clearly some things going on down there that go deeper than players getting caught with drugs.

There has been a lot of speculation about player ineligibility at Ark over the past week or so. He might not have many players back. Time will tell.

Im happy for john. But this is a step back for the Arkansas program., Stan Health won 20 games a year and went to back to back NCAA's. John has not consistently made the tourny. I know of the allegations of ineligibility but they are just allegations at this point.

Arkansas has hired a winner. I live in Mobile and have had front row seats for the past 5 years at South Alabama. (note my username) Have seen a LOT of growth in those 5 years. Consider myself lucky to be able to call myself a friend of John's. At 3:00 today Arkansas can start talking about the "former drug problem" in the program. John won't put up with ANYTHING like that.
Now... if they have enough sense to NOT give him the tour of the Tyson Processing Plant for a week or so, he won't bolt like Altman.

I hate this.
Now I will have to root for the hogs when they are not playing UK. Plus, try not to vomit when they are calling the hogs!

To further clarify I think John is making a mistake in going there not that the mistake was in hiring him. Those Razorback folks are almost as big feeling as UK fans with a lot less reason. Add to that their sorry AD, emphasis on football and all the rumors, I see it as a very bad situation to place yourself in.

Awesome opportunity for JP! This will give him the exposure he deserves. Alot more chances for Teacher and Student to go head to head. Donovan vs. Pelphrey, but then Billy G comes in kicks both their butts.

He might be patient but HE will not be the problem. The Arkansas AD is a nut, about half senile. John will have a VERY tough time working with him. I personally think this was a bad choice for John. I hope itworks out but working for Frank Broyels is about as unsecure as a job can get.

Hate seeing John coaching for the enemy.. But except for when they play us, I can't root against him, seeing as he is one of my all time favorite players, and a fellow kid from Eastern Kentucky.
He was actually my choice for the UK job after Donovan.

I doubt he has the capability to do much down there, but the 82 year old athletic director is gone at new years or maybe the school year end. Pelphrey has not shown himself to be a gifted coach so far in his career. Maybe he will be a gifted recruiter for Arkansas, it is a good recruiting area. A real good chance to show his stuff if he has it, or a career ender if he doesn't.
Invest wisely!

Talk about really putting his name out there. If he can go in their and turn that program around and get them back in contention. What a way to put that feather in your hat.

If he does well with what he is given, this could be a bridge job. He could be there for a short amount of time before a better program grabs him.

I wish John well, but FWIW, an Ark. grad at my office was not happy about this hire and said that they should have kept Heath if this was the best they could do. If JP can recruit in ARK and in Memphis, he should be able to get the players to make a difference in the SEC West.

Arkansas fan here. I am very pleased with John Pelphrey as our new Head Basketball Coach. I am also very impressed with your message boards here. Ours are filled with anger and vulgarity regardless of the topic. Obviously the Hog message boards don't represent true Hog fans. We could certainly take a lesson from this board. Most of the posts here seem to be productive, intelligent, and well written. Very classy and very impressive.

Thank you, Sue, for the nice comments about our site. Too, you do indeed have a "CLASS guy" in John Pelphrey. Here's wishing the best for you in all your games except when you play the Cats! :)
In regard to the concerns of some Cat fans here, yes, some of what I have read also concerns me for the situation Pelphrey is entering. However, I suspect he is a man who is going to handle it well. ALSO, in regard to Arkansas' athletic director, he is retiring, if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, Coach Broyles is retiring at the end of the year. Coach Broyles has taken a lot of heat the past couple years, but fans seem to forget how much he has done for the Athletic Department, The University, and the State of Arkansas. He is a great man. At 82, he deserves to retire and take it easy. The search for a new AD is underway. We made a great hire in Coach Pelphrey and I am confident we will hire a great new AD. Is it basketball season yet?!?!
