Texas Connection I
Billy Gillispie intends to throw a wide recruiting net. But in these early days of his time as UK coach, he's going where he already knows the lay of the land: Texas.
Gillispie got a commitment from G.J. Vilarino, a high school sophomore from McKinney, Texas, last week. He also offered a scholarship to another high school sophomore in Texas, Shawn Williams of Duncanville. When the caller identified himself as being from Kentucky, Williams' mother, Tonnea Cox-Williams, laughed.
What's so funny? "Well, I'm his mom," she said, "and I'm from Kentucky. I grew up in Louisville. I grew up a Cardinal fan. I never thought he'd be interested in Kentucky."
Cox-Williams, a 1988 graduate of Shawnee High School, works as a support principal at Maceo Smith High in the Dallas area. Her husband, Shawn, works for the parks and recreation department. U of L memorabilia, including odes to the Camden Connection, decorate the home.
Their son, Shawn, is a top 25 national prospect in the class of 2009. He attended Gillispie's summer camps at Texas A&M the past two summers. A 6-6 wing, he's received scholarship offers from such schools as Texas, Baylor, Arkansas, Illinois, Texas A&M and Arizona.

I read this article in the paper this morning and could not believe that his mother is from Louisville and a Cardinal fan!:shock:Has the old Camden Connection memorabilia up in her home. :lol:It is ironic to her too that her son is nowa huge Cat fan since Coach G is now here. She indicated that she woulda never thunk it.:thumbup

I knew that she was from Louisville, but I did not know she was a hardcore U of L fan.

Let's hope that she has a reason to cheer for the Wildcats beginning in the fall of '09. BTW, Rise magazine ranks Williams an the #9 player overall and the top small forward in his class.

Texas forward Shawn Williams has a family tie to the Louisville area and is high on the University of Louisville.

But the 6-foot-6 Williams also lists the University of Kentucky and Indiana University among the list of schools he's currently considering.

Williams, who will be a junior at Duncanville High School this fall, excelled this week at the adidas Super 64 event, where his Texas Select team went 0-4 but he averaged 18 points.

U of L coach Rick Pitino and UK coach Billy Gillispie watched several of his games. He said the three locals have offered him scholarships, along with Arkansas, Texas A&M, Kansas, North Carolina and Baylor.

Definitely a little worrying that an AAU team with Vilarino and big target Williams went 0-4.

Games they played-

85-84 loss to Michigan Mustangs
93-87 loss to Hunting Park Warriors
89-81 loss to Team Philly-Elite
76-61 loss to Lakeshow
