"This week the NCAA's Management Council will consider a proposal to prohibit coaches from text messaging prospects. If the Management Council concurs, the ban would move to the NCAA Board of Directors for final approval. Gillispie and coaches in all sports might have to rest their thumbs beginning Aug. 1. Blackberries will sigh in relief."

whats the diff. as long as they are not doing it in a no contact period, Phone or text who cares. Maybe the NCAA should worry about filing charges against OSU a not texting....Really stupid!

Contact is contact. As long as it is done in a legal contact period, it should not matter how the contact is made.

Kids today would probably rather get TM's rather than phone calls.

...and add USC to that list of programs that the NCAA should be focusing on rather than worrying about cell phone usage.

I think you are missing the point. They are trying to ban it all together, even in non-restricted time frames.

I was referring to legal contact periods only. as long as it is a recruiting period it shouldn't matter if it's smoke signals or C.B radio. It just points out the ignorance of the NCAA even more than usual. They did just admit a major screw up in filing in paper work.

I prefer the Bob Knight take on the NCAA Rulebook:

"I spoke to the National Press Club in Washington a couple of years ago, and I took the NCAA guide and dropped it on a table, and it sounded like a rocket it was so heavy," Knight said. "And then from beneath the podium, I took out the Constitution of the United States. I think it had four pages, you know.
"And I said, 'I'm a history major and I ought to know this exactly, but I think this has been amended 28 times since 1783, and it's provided millions and millions of people with the best lifestyle that has ever existed in the world.' And I said, 'But this son of a $*@*% over here has been amended 28 times since noon yesterday, and nobody still has any idea what the hell is in it.'"

I believe text messaging should be illegal. Not all text messaging plans are free. There are limits to the number of phone calls that can be made - why should there not be a limit or ban on text messaging?

As one article points out that a coach can text a player to call him back. The player calling the coach is not counted against the coach, but contact was initiated by the coach and therefore has found a loophole.

Kids have enough contact with coach's and schools - they don't need thousands of texts from coach's every month to let them know they are wanted.

I think the point here is that the NCAA wants to ban text messages totally. TOTALLY. As in they wouldn't be allowed even during recruiting periods. We're not talking about cutting out a loophole, we're talking about ignoring technology.

Well, if it becomes illegal, I'm going to be thinking that I surely wish it had become illegal before IU's Coach Sampson signed one of the top recruiting classes in the nation, while mostly able only to use only text messaging because of NCAA penalties for his intentional illegal recruiting at Oklahoma.Further, it would obviously be a shamefor UK, as wewould likely suffer with Coach Gillispie's beingsuch a hard worker in that area, reportedly being the coach who does the most textmessaging in the nation. :(In other words, the timing would work beautifully for IU and unfortunately for UK.

Having said that, IDO UNDERSTAND GeorgiaBlue's concerns about text messaging's cost to the recruits. I had wondered about that. Too, like Craigthe Bluehearton another thread, I expect the restriction to be passed.
