I know that everyone is hoping he will save the last scholarship for the 08 class, but what do you think the chances are that we sign a good junior college player over the summer? Billy Clyde is known as a good talent evaluator. I would be happy either way.

After we sign Patterson (I hope), I say we hold the other scholarship for '08 and run, run, run. I'm not really in the know as far as the JUCO players, but I doubt there's many quality big guys out there.

I agree, I'm not too up on that either but I would rather take the scholarship and recruit some quality big men for '08 than take the risk on a JUCO who may not pan out.

And what if we don't sign Patterson? He will probably use one of them on a JC player, right? I'm not pushing this, I just think if he can find a player that can contribute, he will sign him.

Unless there's a different deadline for signing junior college players, today is the last day to sign one of them, too. If he plans to sign a JuCo player, Coach Gillispie should have already done a lot of background work. Otherwise, I don't think even he works that fast. I know he mentioned the possibility of JuCo players when he first became our coach, but I haven't heard of any names. (Which doesn't mean he hasn't been quietly recruiting someone.)
Of course, we could get a verbal from a JUCo player or a high school player any time this summer. Then they could simply show up and go on scholarship this fall. The only drawback to this is that the verbal is nonbinding, and other schools could still recruit them.

If Billy G needs a contingency plan, Im sure he has one. It may not be the greatest player, but I'm sure there are some stop-gaps to be found somewhere on his list.

Every quality JUCO player is already signed. If we don't get Patterson, then I think we play with what we have and focus on 2008.

I agree. BCG will pretty much get a pass this year due to it being his first year, so I think he takes his lumps and holds the scholarships for 08 and works like hell to sign a top 5 class.

Jeremy Cox has come from the JUCO world and is only a few years removed from a championship there as well. I dont dislike the idea, but it seems we would have heard some names by now if this were the case.

And I liked both Barbour and Sims. Barbour wasnt the player he was supposed to be after he hurt/broke his wrist that year. Sims started farily well I thought and had a decent game against Kansas I remember correctly, but then again he hurt his back and didnt do much else all season.

I have a penchant for JUCO players though, it is almost like a rags to riches kind of thing.

Derek Anderson was a JUCO kid, and he turned out alright, so not all have been busts!

Anderson transfered from Ohio St, not JUCO.

I am trying to remember the last JUCO who did anything at UK. Was Dale Brown a JUCO? Was Rondney Dent a JUCO? Not a lot of success from the JUCO ranks. Frankly Barber was not bad, just overhyped. He was a pretty good 6th man his SR year.

I think he could/would have been great but then he broke his wrist and I think his shot and confidence were gone.

Thanks, those two would have to be considered the best two we have had in 20 years or so, at least that I can remember, though Dent was more potential than actual results due to his injury.

Bob Burrow was probably the best JuCo player ever for us. His teams were 43-9 (.827) He is one of only 4 Cats to finish with a CAREER scoring average of 20 ppg or better. (The other three are Dan Issel, Cotton Nash, and Kevin Grevey.) He was twice all SEC, twice All American, and twice All NCAA Regional.

There is a different deadline for JUCo players. If you'll remember, Sims signed over the summer. But if all the good JUCo players are already taken then it doesn't matter when the deadline is.:icon_frown:

Adrian Smith started for the '58 championship team, then played quite a few years in the NBA as Oscar Robertson's backcourt mate for the Royals. Smith was the MVP of the NBA all star game one year (and back then, the NBA all star game was a real game with both teams playing hard, including defense, and trying to win). Art Laib was a Juco, never got off UK's bench. The worst Juco I've ever seen at UK was the forward that Tubby signed. Can't even remember his name, now, but he gave up basketball after a few games at UK.

Nate something or other. He was aweful. Transfered out after 1 semester, something I had never seen before. Tubby sure knew how to pick em.
