View Full Version : Pick one band you think everyone should hear

I'm a big music freak and thought i'd throw this question out there... but if you could pick one band/group that you feel everyone needs to hear b/c they're good, who would it be?
For me, it's My Morning Jacket... everyone here needs to hear this... especially since they are from Kentucky (Louisville to be exact).... I hung out a little bit w/ the lead singer Jim back in the High school days and a couple of times during college (which he attended UK by the way, before pursuing his musical dreams) and he always had that aura about him... definitely worth the effort to listen... I know there is a lot of you who already know about MMJ, but just had to throw it out there and try to get a music conversation going...

I think everybody needs to see Nickel Creek live. Their studio albums are one thing; good songs, good singing, obvious that are talented musicians. But the live show: WOW. They are every bit as much a jam band as, say, Phish or Moe., and they are true virtuosos on their instruments. Especially Chris Thile on the mandolin. I've been to many, many, rock shows, but nothing rocked harder than the night I saw the Creek in Birmingham, AL, playing a version of "Taxman" and "Subterranean Homesick Blues". Also, in the middle of "The Lighthouse's Tale", they segued into some Coldplay and some Radiohead. Pretty amazing stuff...
Upon edit: Great topic!

Bela and the guys rip it up. Love Wooten and futureman. They play with DMB all the time. In one show I have Bela comes out to play and Dave says " On the dayGod rested he was making Bela Fleck a banjo"
You can get Robert Randolph off of btree.org or archieve.org. archieve.org also has a bunch of bandsand you can dload the shows and some have streaming option so you can just listen. I get all of my stuff from trading sites that use torrents.
By the way Bela and the guys are in Lex the first week of March.

what a difficult question!
the band that comes to my mind is the subdudes. great musicians with excellent harmonies. they may not be anyone's favorite band, but i think that anyone would enjoy listening to them, and i'm not sure that many people have heard of them. they are from new orleans, and have recently regrouped after separating for some time.
i still have to say that my favorite band is the dave matthews band, but i think everyone has heard them by now, or at least heard of them.
i would also agree that bela fleck and the flecktones, and robert randolph and the family band would be great bands to check out if you have never heard them. if you haven't heard them, you've probably never heard anything like them.
one last band. i'm not sure if it will suit everyone's tastes, but my favorite new find of 2005 was the john butler trio. awesome band from austrailia.

Haynes is the hardest workin' man in the business. I saw him with his band (then known simply as the Warren Haynes Band) when they opened for Blues Traveler. He went on to play with Traveler, then onto the main event with the Allman Bros. About 5 hours worth of guitar work by him that evening...

JD I got both Mule shows from Dec30 and 31 at the Beacon in NYC. On the 31st they played @ 32 songs. Have it on 3 discs so they played for almost 4 hours. They played some covers including Folsom Prison Blues, Pappas got a brand new bag, and some 60's soul stuff.

You have to get a bit of a buzz on in whatever way you prefer. Then slip on some high quality head phones and pop in a disk of the best of Pink Floyd and drift away with it for an hour or so.
A mind needs to experience a few of the boundries that group touched. It may be uncomfortable for some at first, but you will know you have been to new places and then came back safely having enjoyed the ride in some strange way. :D

I actually did get to see that. By accident. Just flipping the channels and caught almost their whole set.
Just an unbelievable band in every conceivable way. I've never heard anything like it. Z has to be the best album of 2005. (And many critics agreed.) I think what makes them great is that they can play a raucous Southern jam well, and they can play an atmospheric psych-ballad just as well.
Did you know that they used to record inside a grain silo so they could get that voice effect he uses?

Yeah, the silo is in Shelbyville... was owned by the family of the ex-member Danny Cash... I'm pretty sure (I think i read this somewhere) the video for One Big Holiday was filmed there... Z is incredible and really is whatprompted me to start this thread... Everyone in Kentucky should be proud of how they represent....
I'm assuming that you've seen them live... just unbelievable... you may want to know that they do have a live DVD coming out... supposed to be this year from the Z tour... I love this quote by the way after he killeda bug or spider on stage... "It was the first time I ever killed a living thing on stage - Other than slaying the audience with my tasty guitar riffs" - Jim James
I did run into Jim not to long ago on Frankfort avenue... really hasn't changed a bit... I didn't know him all that well, but we had a lot of mutual friends and hung out a few times back in high school... incredible memory... he knew who I was eventhough i haven't seen him in 10 years... he's a really interesting person to talk to... always has been...

A band that I've been fond of for a long time is the Pousette-Dart Band.I think that you can only get them on vinyl though.
Speaking of vinyl, I have been thinking about getting a turntable. I haven't had one for a while. I thought about one of those retro stereos. Does anyone have one that could tell me what the sound is like? I saw an Emerson on sale for around $130.00. Italso has a DVD player and a cassette player.

There is a band called "Spartan Fidelity" formed by two brothers that were in a band called Remy Zero. Their music has hints of Radiohead, Travis, and even a Beatles feel on a track or two. You've probably heard some Remy Zero along the way and didn't know it. They've been on some soundtracks and one of the songs "Save Me" is the theme song for "Smallville". Lead singer was at one time married to Alyssa Milano for a while.:thumbup

Black Eyed peas are the definition of sellout.
They were a very respected, somewhat underground hip hop group in the late 90's and their first indie album was very well received. Then they added the girl and totally sold out to the MTV genre, their music now is beyong horrible. "My humps", are your serious.

Insert Dave Matthews ...lol... talk about "sellout"... and your description is right on when you insert DM. Used to be underground and somewhat decent... now the music is horrible. At least he still has Buford playing for him, the only redeeming factor. I hate the BEPs also.

Not even going to get drawn into that debate. Out of @ 200 songs they have @ 8 music videos. But their studio stuff doesn't concern me, dont own a single one of their studio albums.
Sell outs don't let their fans tape their shows and trade them just like they did 14 yrs ago either. And not worry about the $$ they are missing out on.

We saw Chris Duarte last night at the Double Door Inn in Charlotte. Often accused of being an SRV clone, and at times a little over the top, put he put on a whale of a show before about 200 people who were shoe horned in there. Played for 3 1/2 hours, and was brilliant.

I can see both sides of the black eyed peas, Dm debate... Though DMB, fell into commerical sucess, but have maintained their roots, which i respect.. Black Eyed Peas did do the commerical stuff and it is hard to seperate. I like both fairly well
Whoever was talking about dream theatre, come on man.. It is like Steve Vai on crack... They can play, but it is so processed and produced. Though some prog is good, i pefer stripped down sounds, of just a guitar etc... If you took Dream Theatre out of the studio, it is hard to reproduce those sounds.

Okay, I dunno if it's for everyone, but I like this jazz and standards singer from Bozeman Montana, not the least reason is because she likes my kid.
I dunno, I never liked anyone who "everyone should listen to", in fact I always liked odd bands.

Another Montana musician would be Phillip AAberg, and I like his "Blue West".

Of course, it's small stuff compared to the big city, and we think we are "so special", so maybe it doesn't measure up, but if I get a chance, I promote my town.

Danny Gatton and Eva Cassidy were friends who played a lot in DC metro (sad to say I never saw either) but both were transcendant and both died way too young. Gatton was a guitar vituoso and Eva was a great torch singer.
Jeff Craddock
02-20-2006, 07:09 PM
Eva Cassidy was an amazing talent, having one of the purest voices ever. But she also had something else, a spiritual quality that's hard to define. Although I've heard it a thousand times, her version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow still gives me goosebumbs....and a tear or two. Eva took guitar lessons from Danny Gatton for several years. Her voice is such that many don't notice how good her guitar work was.
I saw the Eva Cassidy band once, at Border's Books and Music at White Flint Mall in Rockville. I had no idea who they were or how good they really were. It was after work and I was browsing--when I heard the band, I drifted over and listened to a couple songs. That was the extent of it. Years later, a couple years after Eva died, someone sat me down and played her version of Autumn Leaves. That was one of those musical epiphanies that happen once in a blue moon--there was something in that voice that melted away all my resistance and went straight to the heart.
Sir Richard F. Burton wrote: Danny Gatton and Eva Cassidy were friends who played a lot in DC metro (sad to say I never saw either) but both were transcendant and both died way too young. Gatton was a guitar vituoso and Eva was a great torch singer.

Wonderin, the near to Cincinnati people, why aren't the Greenhornes on this list? I'm juststreaming their Sewed Soles after listening to Holly Golightly sing with them on that weird Broken Flowers movie. Just sixties garage rock but kinda interesting.
They surely must play around Northern Kentucky, eh?

Look below:
Greenhornes (http://www.greenhornes.com/gh.html)
I had them confused with The Bears or one of their members other bands but I was mistaken.

I've recently caught onto a new band called "People in Planes":
http://www.peopleinplanes.com
The songs I have heard so far remind me a bit of early Radiohead if anything I could compare them to immediately. But they are an outstanding band that I expect will be heard from on radio in the near future.
I've already heard them a couple times on XM (the only place you can actually hear new music)

Jeff Craddock wrote: Levi, are they still playing? Rodney Hatfield--the harp player--was a friend when I lived in Lexington, way back in the day. I haven't been in Lexington since 1997, so I haven't had a chance to keep up with them. They were/are very good.

Sorry for the delay Jeff. I thought you might find this interesting:
Frank Schaap
Born: May 5th 1952 in New York City, raised from an early age in the great state of Kentucky.
Favorite food: Fried flounder, Cocoa Krispies, and Vin Rouge (though not at the same time)
Toured the US of A for 15 years as a founding member of the Metropolitan Blues All-Stars. Went broke and moved to New Orleans and worked with the Royal Street Rounders for 4 years as buskers. Met Danny and his cast of characters and misfits sometime around then. Wrote the Grammy nominated song "Deep Mine Blues" for Larry Cordle and Lonesome Standard Time in 2000. Went broke again. Moved permanently to France in 2002 where he performs solo and as a charter member of the Lost and Wandering Blues and Jazz Band. He remains broke.

Thanks for the link, Levi. :thumbup Frank was always unique--he used to do solo gigs at Alfalfa, including some of his own stuff and some more folkie things. But my all-time favorite Schapp memory is his incomparable version of Tom Waits' "Looking for the Heart of Saturday Night", his only Metro Blues solo.
I know Rodney is doing mostly art--"Artsnake"--but I've wondered what Nick Stump is up to. He published a book of poetry a few years ago, revealing a side that he rarely showed. He played one of the best--and most subtle--blues guitars I've ever heard.
Edit: I decided to answer my own question, so I googled Nick's name and came up with the link below.

Scroll down to "Stumpin' the Blues" and read catch up with the doings of all the All-Stars.
