Cats offer St. X lineman
By Jeff Drummond, CatsPause.com Publisher – Rivals.com
The talent-rich city of Louisville has always been a major football recruiting battleground for Kentucky, especially in recent years as the hometown Cardinals have elevated their profile on the national scene.
The Wildcats have found many of those head-to-head battles to be challenging, but appear to have a leg up for one of the top prospects in the Derby City for 2008.
"I've always been a huge Kentucky fan growing up," said St. Xavier lineman Matthew Smith. "I've been at the games ever since I was a little kid. My dad and my family are big Kentucky fans, and one of my best friends has always had season tickets, so I go to a lot of the games with him...

Many came to Kentucky's summer camp hoping to turn the heads of the UK coaching staff and land a possible scholarship offer.
"I got the offer after Kentucky's summer camp," Matthew Smith said. "I got the offer from Ohio a few months before when there coach came to see me at school."
The Louisville (Ky.) native is a Wildcat fan from birth and says the offer from Kentucky will be tough to beat.
"I went to all of there games this past year and I have a great relationship with the coaching staff," Smith said. "It was a dream come true to get the offer."
The St. Xavier HS standout, however, is not ready to pull the trigger, yet.
"I just wanna make sure it's the best decision for me, first," Smith said. "I'm going to Auburn camp and then I'll hopefully have a decision sometime before the season. I want to get it over with before the year, but my coaches are telling me to wait, so I am sure."
The Wildcats want the 6-foot-4, 270 pounder to play offensive line at the next level, making the transition from defensive tackle, much like former St. Xavier defensive tackle Justin Jeffries did when he made the transition to offensive line when he started for the Wildcats as a true freshmen. Jeffries would go on to make the SEC All-Freshmen team.
"That's what the coaches have told me," Smith said. "They said I can try out at defensive line, but that my future is probably at offensve line. They like the way I move and that I can really get around and I'd be great on the other side of the ball. I haven't played there for five years."

DLmen are generally more agile than OL. This looks like an attempt to even things up, i.e, Smith has good agility for an OL but maybe not quite enough for whats needed of an SEC DL. JMO.
