View Full Version : How do you get a game on ESPN Classic?

I've been wondering this today. Mitch has said he's working to get the game on ESPN Classic... but what does that entail?
Does he promise to pick up part (or all) of the expense of putting the game on the air?
Does he try to drum up corporate sponsors that will promise to buy advertising time during the game?
Does he just call up the head of ESPN to say "pretty, pretty please with sugar on top"?
I really have no idea how you go about working out a deal to get a game televised when the cable company isn't interested. Anyone have a clue?

This should be a very good matchup this year and I am baffled as to why its such a slog to get it televised.
I think ESPN 1 & 2 chose games like Central Michigan at Akron State. not a real game, just an example, over us.

The games have been bad (TV wise) until you go back to the Ragone beating. two years ago was a great finish, but most everyone thought it was over at half time and stopped watching. And because is was suppose to be a blowout, no one watched anyway. This year it should be an exciting game, but history doesnt say so. Even the Couch-Redman offensive games were ugly blowouts.

You have to understand that ESPN is punishing UK for moving the game from the slot they had for it - the first weekend of the season. I'll take all bets that it's on ESPN next year when it's the first game. When we choose to snub ESPN we shouldn't complain/wonder about the consequences.

I'm no conspiracy theorist, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I don't think it's a conspiracy. I think it's big business & ESPN is showing who is in charge. Game times & game days are moved all the time to suit ESPN - hence our Th game at SC. They call the shots, period. Shots = $$.
Also, the game not being on TV is costing the SEC as a whole I think because I believe all network TV revenues are shared equally by the schools. If true, the rest of the SEC probably isn't too happy with us either.
Again, we can do whatever we want but there's no reason to expect anyone else - ESPN, SEC, LV - to like it. It looks selfish to them IMO.

Really? If ESPN wanted any part of this game there was ample opportunity on the many ESPN channels for them to pick us. That MB has to lobby for it on Classic vs ESPN coming to UK should tell anyone it's not common sense - hence my question.
BTW, please let jb answer what his source was vs. butting in.

Really? No, one of the articles on the subject. Might have been a Barnhart article in the Kernel.

FWIW, I also read an article that included Barnhart's comment that ESPN Classic was interested in covering the game.

I don’t know if I believe ESPN is trying to make a point or not but I am old enough not to discount anything these days. I look at the morning newspapers or watching the evening news brings that point home. Glancing over the games ESPN selected for that entire day inclusive of ESPN2 has to raise an eyebrow or two. Also, ESPN’s refusal to even consider a ‘split market’ telecast is troublesome as well, so who knows?

WHO KNOWS is a fair response, as I see it. When I looked at some of the games televised by the network that day, I must admit that the thought of ESPN's "trying to make a point" (a nice way of saying it ) did cross my mind. GO CATS!!!
