According to Scout.com and our own Rob Gidel, UK received its second football commitment of the year today, Randall Cobb, a multi-dimensional, slashing quarterback from Alcoa, Tennessee. Cobb is considered one of the more athletic players that UK has been looking at this season, but it is unclear whether he is certain to be projected as a college QB or at some other position. This is a big commitment for UK, although had it been Randall "Tex" Cobb, I might have been more excited.

Yeah, me, too. Especially since the man's been dead for about 4 years now. ;)

Randall Cobb, 5-foot-11 multi-purpose athlete from Alcoa High School in Tennessee, committed to the Kentucky Wildcats Saturday morning.
"I went up there for the Kentucky football camp," Cobb said. "It was a one-day camp, and I got an offer afterwards. I played pretty well, I guess. I wanted to think about it a little – to make sure it was the right decision. I think it was."

Cobb, who has been primarily used at quarterback and cornerback in high school, said Kentucky has indicated they will primarily use him as a receiver, “I worked out at receiver during camp and I think the coaches really liked what I could do,” Cobb said.

Cobb said that he loved the experience from his visit to Kentucky but that friends and family made it easy to make this decision, “My family loved it there and my best friend Kyrus Lanxter recently committed there,” Cobb said, “so I really felt like it was the best thing for me.”

As to whether he will be getting any practice and playing time at other positions, Cobb said he wasn’t sure, “I know they want me at wide receiver. We have talked a little about me playing some quarterback or defensive back, but nothing has been decided. I am not thinking a lot about that right now. I am just happy to have made the commitment and am going to do what the coaches ask. I want to help this team....

It's not quite a 'pipeline,' but the Alcoa-Kentucky connection will take place for a second straight year.

Tornadoes quarterback (http://www.volunteertv.com/sports/headlines/8310167.html#) Randall Cobb has committed to play for the University of Kentucky. He'll join former Alcoa teammate Kyrus Lanxter on the Big Blue roster. Lanxter will suit up for Kentucky this fall.

Cobb told Sports Overtime's Daryl Hobby that he committed to Kentucky June 30th. The Wildcats offered the 5'11" rising senior June 15th, after Cobb attended a Wildcat camp.

"Saturday morning around 4 a.m.," Cobb said. "I just, I was laying up and I couldn't go to sleep, that's all I could think about. I was ready. I felt like I was ready to commit then, so I called the next morning and told them."

Randy Sanders, a former Tennessee offensive coordinator and now Kentucky's quarterback coach, played a big role in the recruitment of Cobb.

Tennessee athlete commits to Cats

By Jim Tirey, CatsPause.com Staff Writer – Rivals.com

The Kentucky Wildcats added another commitment to their 2008 football class on Saturday, and they get a quarterback with great numbers who might also come in handy at another position before all is said and done.

Randall Cobb, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound dual-threat quarterback from Alcoa, Tenn., called the UK coaching staff and informed them he would be a Wildcat.

"I just committed about 30 minutes ago," Cobb said Saturday morning. "I called coach (Randy) Sanders and told him, and he told me to call coach (Rich) Brooks and tell him. He was excited. He said he had just woke up, and he liked good news to start the day off right. He was excited for me and for my family and excited to get me up there."...

Really? It's been awhile, but I distinctly remember reading about where he had passed away. I can't remember if it was in the paper or in one of the sports rags. Guess they were wrong, huh?

Oh, well. I stand corrected.:)

I don't know why but I really like having high school quarterbacks that are very athletic to play WR. Welcome aboard!

I thought ol Tex was dead, I heard that years ago, don't remember where. I thought he died in a fiery crash in Raising Arizona, but I checked imdb.com, and sure enough he is in pre production with ol Smokin Willie Nelson.
