I saw this one posed on another site but not quite this way.

A player pulls up for a jump shot....at the wrong goal. At the time he is inside the opposing teams 3-point arc but obviously well beyond his own 3-point arc. He is fouled in the act of shooting by the opposing team.

Does he get to shoot foul shots? How many? At what goal?

Ok Doc, here goes. This is really an easy one, although it sounds complicated, and will seem so in the explaination. But this is a good example why officials make the big bucks. :D

Rule 4, Section 67. A try for a field goal is an attempt by a player to score two or three points by throwing or tapping the ball into his or her basket. So, a player cannot be in the act of shooting if the attempt is toward the opponents basket.

Now here's where it can get complicated. If the team fouled is in the bonus, the player fouled would have a one & one at his basket. If, when the foul occurs, the ball is still in the hands, and the ball continues into the opponents basket, the goal does not count, and he will still get a one & one. However, if the ball has left the hands when the foul occurs and continues into the opponents basket, the goal counts for the opponent, and the fouled player still gets a one & one at his basket. The reason for this is the ball is dead immediately when the foul occurs, like any other foul.

I hope this makes sense.

That's bizarre, but a great explanation that in its own way makes a lot of sense. Thanks lighthouse. :thumbup

Wow...thanks Lighthouse.

Who is the guy that sat down to think that rule thru from A - Z. I would say that IMO both players should be ejected from the game for stupidity, The guy shooting at the wrong goal and the moron on the other team for trying to stop him.

Doc, you are absolutely right. I've had it happen and you should see and hear both coaches. It's a hoot.
