LEXINGTON — At this point, three months before the Kentucky Wildcats tip-off the season at Big Blue Madness, Kentucky head coach Billy Gillispie is giving big thought into a small lineup approach for his inaugural season.

“This will probably be one of the smaller teams that we’ll have,” Gillispie said during a teleconference earlier this week. He went on to mention that Kentucky could use a four-guard lineup in the upcoming season.

Gillispie, who took over at Kentucky in March, inherited a team with a gigantic hole in the middle after Randolph Morris’ departure to the NBA.

Because of a thin front-line that includes center Jared Carter, who is rehabbing from a shoulder injury suffered in a pickup game, Gillispie will use freshman Patrick Patterson to fill the void quickly.

He anticipates that although the immediate insert into the lineup is a load for a freshman to carry, Patterson’s broad shoulders are up for the challenge.

With the quality of our guards paired against Tennessee's, that matchup is gona be fun to watch.

Yes it is. The strange thing is, UK and UT are going to have similar teams. That's a very good match-up on paper.

Looking at the inside match-ups: Chism and Crews are savvy, and I like 'em both, but Patterson should be able to destroy them athletically. Neither of them are that agile.

I dont know, when we played at UT last year they seemed pretty agile with all the back door alley-oops they had on us.

But I agree, it seems most people are picking UT to win the conference. And on paper we really match nicely tit for tat, so I like to think we could contend for the conference title.

Yeah, UK looks on par with Tenn, but Tenn has shown that they could hang with and beat the top teams last year. Unfortunately, UK hasn't shown that same ability the last couple of years. So, it makes sense that they are projected higher than us, but no one really knows at this point because we'll just have to wait and see how well this team gels with Billy Clyde.

Given Kentucky's lack of quality players and depth in the front court. The previous regime really left the cupboard bare up front.
