Looks like a great prospect. Interesting that he's from Oklahoma. If Capel can keep some of the recent talent in state, he could really build a monster program.

Me likey. I've always taken a liking to the big banger types. He looks like he could pass as Danny Fortson's twin bro.

One of the players I had a chance to watch at the Nike Memorial Day Classic was Oklahoma big man Daniel Orton, one of the best players in the Class of 2009.

The 6-foot-9, 265-pound Orton is a big guy. And he not only can dominate a game on the offensive end, but also on defense. He was sensational on defense the two games I watched him. He can take over with ability to be physical in the paint, block shots and dominate the boards.

Orton, ranked No. 8 in the Class of 2009 by Rivals.com and No. 10 by Scout.com, said he's still going through the recruiting process. He listed six schools: Oklahoma, Ohio State, Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA and USC.

I'm glad to see Kentucky on his short list. I think Orton would be a huge get for Kentucky. Not sure how much some of the other forum members here think of him...since I'm obviously the first one to post in this thread (after 190 views), while others are speaking out against the importance of big men in another thread. But at 6'10", Orton would bring that physical, low post interior presence and rebounding, low block scoring, and defensive presence that I think is so vital in basketball. Especially if Patterson was to leave after the upcoming season....Orton would be a great replacement (or addition, if Patterson stays). But either way.....like I said, from the sounds of things others may not welcome the news very much, but I don't care...I do.

I don't think you will find anyone on this board that wouldn't welcome this guy with open arms. Orton is a supreme talent! If he comes in then you will have a great low post threat for years to come.

I'm a believer in getting talent. Orton is not one you want to pass on if you have the chance to get him even if you had 5 6-9 265 guys sitting on the bench. He's an impact player that would see a lot of court time here and an excellent addition to the front line. While we do need back court players, you can't just dismiss guys like this out of hand because you don't know who will come back next year and who won't. You have to keep recruiting all positions and hope it works out.

If PP stays for his Junior year (which I believe he will) can you even imagine a front line of Orton, Patterson and Darius Miller (Miller will be an absolute stud by then)?

Did you really HAVE to go there? Do you think I DON'T want him? Geesh! Yes he would be an awesome get. But you don't have to have guys like this to win. That's all I was saying:icon_rolleyes:

That would be downright scary. Arguably the best frontcourt in college b-ball.

Outside of of course Wall and maybe the transfer from Iowa State, Orton is the guy I want.

I rate Orton as the #1 guy I want....IF...Liggins qualifies, and Vilarino is capable and able of being a true D-1, SEC type PG for UK (verdict still seems to be out on that somewhat as of now). Otherwise, Wall is #1 and Orton #2. But....IF...there is a way to land BOTH Wall and Orton....with Hood and Vilarino committed for next year....then I think it's safe to say that Kentucky would have the #1 recruiting class in the country for '09.

Here is a video I found of Orton. Clearly a man amongst boys. And if teamed WITH Patterson....it could be downright scary. Even if PP leaves, Orton, Harrellson and Stevenson would still form a very nice inside presence (with Meeks, Miller, Hood, Galloway, hopefully Liggins, etc. on the perimeter):

KU, Kentucky top Orton's list (http://newsok.com/ku-kentucky-top-ortons-list/article/3301427/?tm=1222149305)
By Brandon Chatmon

NewsOK.com

Kansas and Kentucky are the leaders in the basketball recruiting battle for Daniel Orton.

Orton had listed Kentucky as his leader, but the Bishop McGuinness forward on Monday said Kansas has joined the Wildcats atop his list. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Ohio State are the other programs on Orton's final list.

He was always going to take this visit. The outcome should be no surprise. However, he didn't commit on the spot. So that's the best we could have hoped for. Of course Self and co. are going to be tough to beat out, especially when you think of proximity and the fact that they've just hung a banner. But, don't count Gillispie out just yet. We've got the best relationship with the Ortons, and that's very important. I don't think this will drag out as long as originally predicted though, which was the spring.

You're kidding, right? While UK is definitely on the rise under BCG's recruiting prowess, we have not been nationally relevent since 2005 (our last Elite Eight). UK has not been in the Final Four since 1998, when Orton was around 9-years old.

Think about that for a minute......Since UK's last Championship/Final Four, Orton (and other recruits) have grown up with programs like KS, UConn, FL, UNC, UCLA and Memphis dominating the landscape. Kentucky has been mostly absent unfortunately.

This is the kind of recruiting war we need to be in. And it's obvious that Gillispie knows how to bring in elite talent. But to think UK should be winning every battle is simply ignoring the truth. We have major ground to make up nationally. The "Drought" has ramifications.

BlueHeart

I have a feeling that this isn't much to worry about.

By the way, it seems like BCG and Self have aligned in such a way that Orton will choose between the two. They are great friends and there is no dirty recruiting between the two. I certainly won't be surprised to see MANY recruits choosing between UK and KU for years to come. It's almost as if they can recruit together, get the stars to choose between the two, and then each school gets enough to be successful when it all shakes out.

Daniel Orton is a Kentucky Wildcat
ESPNU 100 prospect Daniel Orton of Bishop McGuinness (Oklahoma City, Okla.), ranked No. 10 overall and No. 2 among centers in Class 2009, has made a commitment to play for coach Billy Gillispie at Kentucky.

Orton (6-foot-10, 260-pounds) had also been considering Kansas, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Oklahoma State.

The standout averaged 13.7 points, 11.2 rebounds and 5.2 blocks during his junior season.

...from the pickup game this morning.

Fans applauded when veteran UK players appeared on the court for the pickup games. But Orton was the only one to rate a standing ovation. He did not disappoint. Early on, he rebounded a Patrick Patterson miss, dribbled toward the left corner and swished a set shot. "He's a beast," one fan could be heard to say.
Later, Orton dunked over Euton and got into an interesting competitive exchange with transfer Matt Pilgrim. First, Orton posted up for a basket over Pilgrim, which drew cheers. Then Pilgrim answered with a rousing dunk. Then, Orton dunked on Pilgrim.

Apparently, not really according to this (http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081012/SPORTS03/81012015)Bill Self notified Orton on Friday that Kansas had completed its recruiting class.

But Orton, a senior center from Bishop McGuinness High School in Oklahoma City, had made up his mind to attend UK before any of that.

Orton made up his mind on Friday, when Kansas coach Bill Self told him the Jayhawks had wrapped their 2009 recruiting with the commitment of power forward Thomas Robinson.

"Kentucky wasn't a backup plan, but it still made my decision a lot easier for me," Orton said at a news conference today at the Hyatt Regency.

“He is a great kid. He handles business off the floor as well as he does stuff on the floor,” Fisher said. “He is everything you would want in a son. He helps kids around the city. He’s very active around school and is friends with everybody. You will not talk to anybody here who doesn’t like him.”
Even though he’s been one of the nation’s top recruits, Fisher says that has not changed his personality.
“He is very humble and still wants to get better. He works hard in practice every day and then will spend an hour to an hour and a half shooting after practice,” Fisher said. “He is really dedicated to basketball. He will be ready to play in college and will make a great player.”

“He has an engaging personality. He will sit and talk to anybody,” Fisher said. “Nobody is ever bigger than him. He will go up to anybody and talk. Wherever he’s at, he will do his best to talk to everybody there.”

So how good is Orton?
“Potentially, his all-around skills could be as good as you will find,” Fisher said. “He can put the ball on the floor and he could lead a fast break if needed. He can probably outrun most guards and even most point guards. He can flat run. If he wants to get up and down the court, he really can.
“He can also shoot the 3. He’s very capable of doing that. We run a lot of ball screens and let him shoot the 3. But the most impressive thing about him might be his passing. He sees the floor very, very well for a big guy.”

I'm giddy as a six year old on Christmas morning. I think we will make some major noise this year but next year it is almost a certainty.:thumbup:

Here is a bit of what was said at the press conference.

I just returned from the Daniel Orton Press Conference at the Hyatt where he announced his intention to sign with Kentucky. There were about 40 fans in attendance, along with players Patrick Patterson, Razor Ramon, Jared Carter, Michael Porter, Josh Harrellson, Mark Krebs, Matt Schnerbenske, Buddy Halcell and Dwight Perry. Below you will see some of his comments and pictures from the event:

On his decision:

I decided two nights ago that I would be coming when Caoch Self told me they were going to stop recruiting me. Then I went to Madness and the fans sealed the deal…..Self thought I would really be upset when he told me, but it didnt bother me at all.

On his relationship with the team:

The guyss treated me like one of their own. They acted as if I was already on the team.

On the UK fans:

The attention has been a bit overwhelming. I am used to just being Big O’s son usually, but I feel like I have made a name for myself recently.

On the press conference:

I didnt expect this many people. But it shows how many people know and love Kentucky.

On the other UK recruits:

Dominque Ferguson is a great player and will be a great addition to the UK family. I also GJ Vilarino really well. We played together this year and he has great agility, speed and quickness. I would get the rebound and outlet the ball and he was already down the court. I like playing with him.

On whether he expects to play with Patterson and how long he thinks he will be in school:

That is Patrick’s decision and I cant speculate what that will be…..People tell me I will play 1 or 2 years, but it depends on how everything goes. You never know what will happen. ,,,more.

Link (http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081012/SPORTS03/81012015)He never said he was "KU bound", he merely stated that by Kansas getting Robinson, it made his decision much easier. Had we received a commitment from Favors etc, and KU still hadn't of gotten Robinson, he would've gone to KU.

...from the pickup game this morning.

Patrick Patterson might not make it to the Glory Land while at Kentucky but he has and will help bring the talent that will get Kentucky back to the Glory Land. I begrudge Patrick not a second if he goes to the NBA after this year however if he were to stay for his junior year he would get to see the Glory Land as a junior.

I can't even imagine a one two punch of Patterson and Orton!! I would completely understand if PPat went to the NBA after this season but man, I am hoping he comes back for one more. Throw in Hood, Miller, Liggins, Stevenson, Harris, etc....and next year's team (with PPat) could be a serious Final Four contender.

What a masterful job by Gillispie to get him to commit before his visit to Kansas next week. BCG is really earning his paycheck. BCG rocks!!

Did anyone else hear a rumor that Kansas took back their scholarship offer from him? If that is true then he had no choice but to come to UK. If I'm wrong please inform me.

Well, according to the news reports about and based on what he said, Bill Self basically told him they had finished their recruiting for the year and weren't going to offer any more schollies. Orton said it didn't really affect his decision apart from making it easier for him. Now, I guess you can take that to mean he was leaning toward the 'Cats all along or it was a toss-up. Your guess is as good as mine on that. Bottom line is he's gonna be wearing the right color blue next season and that's the important thing.

No more schollies for his position. You can look at this from a few different angles, but imo Self took the sure thing. Orton didn't commit at KU, and Self probably figured BCG wouldn't let him out of Lexington without a verbal. Now, part of that is my blue glasses, but I wouldn't look at that theory as unrealistic whatsoever. You don't just pull a scholly offer on Orton if you think you have a legit chance. I know he's ranked 22 now, but he also had that knee brace on. I don't know the particulars of that situation, but he's a top 10 player in this class.

I see what you're saying ukhouseman, but I wanted to make an addition to your post, if I may. I would say "helped steer". BCG and his staff did all of this recruiting. Tubby didn't "bad-mouth" us, and imo that's about all that can be said here. I do appreciate that though.

Since the issue has been addressed, here's what was wriitten in this week's Cats' Pause, to which ukhouseman refers:

Jeff Drummond writes: "The Wildcats also got an assist from former UK coach Tubby Smith, who Larry Orton contacted to get a second opinion of the program."

Drummond then directly quotes Mr. Orton as follows:

"He told me they're great people, they love their players there, and that it would be a great school for Daniel to go to."

That's probably a bit better than our former coach's "not bad-mouthing us" (and I had also previously read, somewhere, that he had also highly praised Coach Gillispie, by the way). :) YET, yes, absolutely, the credit for getting Daniel Orton as a Cat goes to Coach G and his assistants. After this season's success, recruits won't need a second opinion. They will be frothing at the mouth to commit. The problem is that there will be so few schollies available, they may have to fight it out behind the Wildcat lodge and let BCG take whoever is left standing.

But proposed legislation under consideration by the NCAA would restrict future payments to camp workers associated with prospective recruits.

Another example of UK with BCG changing the landscape of college basketball. I am here to say that as long as coach plays within the rules and continues to level the recruiting playing field it only benefits UK. For example if highly touted recruited has only the coaching staff and program to influence his decision then nobody will outwork and outshine UK.

Nice video. I agree that it does show a little more versatility and skill set than the one or two others I have seen. Nice up and under move down low, ability to put it on the floor in the paint, smooth baseline jumper with a little range, nice baby hook shot, and I especially like how he uses the left hand on the other hook shot from just inside the foul line.

With Orton, the main concern I seem to hear from a majority of scouting services will be conditioning...not ability. If he dedicates himself to that, he could be an absolute monster. One thing I'm completely unaware of, though, is his free throw shooting. Hopefully he's not a bricklayer from the line, and teams take a "hack-a-Shaq" approach to stop him by constantly putting him on the line....

Daniel Orton, the gem of Kentucky's basketball recruiting class, signed with the traditional SEC power on Wednesday morning after orally committing to the Wildcats on Oct. 12.

As Orton signed his name and officially became a Kentucky Wildcat, the Bishop McGuinness senior must have been battling mixed emotions.

On one hand, he was fulfilling a dream -- the shot-blocking big man had just joined one of the top college basketball programs in NCAA history.

At the same time, he knew he would spend the majority of his high school senior season on the bench, after having knee surgery last week.

The 6-foot-10, 260-pounder played his junior season on a torn ACL. Although the injury had healed heading into his senior season, he still felt a looseness and pain in the knee.

I like Stevenson to be in the mix to somewhere. I don't care how Gillispie finds out how to do it, Stevenson needs to be in that mix. He is a shot blocking machine, and needs to play for defensive purposes. Coach G needs to leave one spot open no matter what for that defensive monster, and IMO that's Stevenson.

Perry will be in the mix. His senior leadership and experience will be important....and besides, we don't know at of now if Patterson will be back next year. But it's definitely nice to have the kind of depth that a front line of Patterson, Orton, Stevenson and Harrelson will offer.

And just FWIW....Orton is a supreme shot blocker as well. He averaged over 5 blocks per game his junior year in HS. Here is a clip that shows some of his shot blocking (and other) skills:

Picked for the Jordan All-American game in New York as well, Orton will be on had in Louisville, most likely next to UK commits Jon Hood (Madisonville) and G.J. Vilarino (Texas).

Billy Gillispie today said what had been assumed for the past few weeks, mainly that Daniel Orton will soon be ready to return to the basketball court, which will allow him to participate in the Jordan Classic and in the Derby Festival here in Louisville. Many wondered why Orton was not picked for the McDonalds All American game last week, but Orton was not actually eligible for selection due to his missing over half the games for his team this season. Daniel however has recovered very well from his injury and was in attendance at the Tennessee game this past weekend, decked in blue and white. Orton’s unveiling to the UK fanbase at the Derby Classic (where he will join Jon Hood and GJ Vilarino) should be a great moment and one that I am sure UK fans will be anxious to see in April.

Daniel Orton, the top-rated player in Kentucky's 2009 recruiting class, needed knee surgery before his senior season started and did not get to play until the Oklahoma state tournament.

However, Orton showed then why he is so highly rated and why he could make such a big impact for Kentucky next year.

"He got cleared to play at 3 the day of our first game in the state tournament," said Andy Fisher, Orton's assistant coach at Bishop McGuinness High School in Oklahoma City. "He looked really, really good. He's is going to be very special in college."

In the Class AAAA championship game, Orton had 14 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots as his team, which had three injured starters out, nearly won.

In the semifinals, the 6-10 center had six points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots. The first game he had nine points, eight boards and five blocked shots.

He was limited to no more than 16 minutes of play and only play 14 minutes in the championship.

I noticed a few minutes ago....that Daniel's (this) "thread" had been removed from the list of committed Cats...but now it's back up.

Have we heard some good news just recently (tonight) regarding Daniel? Is he still committed to UK?

It was probably added back because Orton's father said that he did NOT ask for a release....

Yes, I added him back after Jeff Drummond interviewed his father. There was a mis-understanding from an earlier interview. When asked if he had requested a release, Daniel responded in an honest answer that he did request one. But that was 2 weeks ago when BCG was let go. His father says he is still going to UK.... for now.

I will bet dollars to donuts that you will be taking this back off after the Derby City game. I am sure that is the reason why they didn't announce it now. He doesn't want any backlash from that at the game.

Someone else mentioned this possibility in another thread as well. And honestly...I can't say that thought didn't cross my mind either!

But the Derby Classic COULD serve to "reinforce" Orton's decision. Once he gets there...if he hears the crowd going crazy, showing him the love....he might decide "ya know what. I've announced Kentucky, these fans love me, I loved Midnight Madness last year, Coach Cal still wants me....I'm going to Kentucky!!!"

Could happen....

I couldn't agree more! That is the exact thought that came to me as well. That the possbility is an extremely possible. He will get tons of love at that game as all of the UK recruits will.

University of Kentucky basketball signee Daniel Orton has been wavering on his decision to play for the Wildcats since Billy Gillispie was fired, but it appears that he is leaning toward staying at UK.

Orton, who was in town last week for the Kentucky Derby Festival, said he first thought about asking for a release from his letter-of-intent and then just wanted to think things over with his family before making a final decision.

It appears that decision is close.

In New York for the Jordan Brand Classic All-Star game this weekend, Orton told Adam Zagoria of SportsNet New York yesterday that he was “staying at Kentucky.” Orton has talked with new UK coach John Calipari several times.

Orton went on to say in the interview: “There was that time that from when coach (Gillispie) got fired, I was little frustrated with everything. There was a thought of having to go back through the recruiting process, which is a little stressful. But I just kind of dealt with it all. . . . Coach Cal’s a great guy and he just seems like a great coach.”

It appears that a decision by University of Kentucky signee Daniel Orton to play for new coach John Calipari is near.

In New York for this weekend's Jordan Brand Classic All-Star game, Orton told Adam Zagoria of SportsNet New York yesterday that he was "staying at Kentucky."

The 6-foot-10 Orton, considered one of the top players in the country, signed with former coach Billy Gillispie and has talked with Calipari several times.

Orton went on to say: "There was that time that from when Coach (Gillispie) got fired, I was little frustrated with everything. There was a thought of having to go back through the recruiting process, which is a little stressful. But I just kind of dealt with it all. … Coach Cal's a great guy, and he just seems like a great coach."

The player's father -- Larry Orton -- told The Courier-Journal last night that a final decision would come in the next few days.

Increasingly, it appears big man prospect Daniel Orton will stick with his commitment to play for Kentucky.

“It looks like Daniel will end up at Kentucky,” his father, Larry Orton, said on Sunday. To seal the deal only requires “just the final touch and OK it,” he said.

Orton, a 6-foot-10 center from Oklahoma City, Okla., is considered a top 20 national prospect in the high school class of 2009. He signed with UK last fall, then wavered on the commitment when the school fired then coach Billy Gillispie in the spring.

New UK Coach John Calipari has spoken to the Orton family several times. Earlier this month, Larry Orton said that something “drastic” would have to happen for his son not to play for Kentucky.

Apparently, nothing drastic has occurred.

I saw Orton, Wall, and Henry at the Nike Peach Jam last year. Orton and Henry were on the same team. Orton was a bit slowed by an injury but he and Henry already had NBA type bodies.

Orton seems like a great kid with a good head on his shoulders. I'm really happy he's going to be a Cat. I predict he will be the leader on the team in a couple of years.

Daniel Orton is “100 percent” committed to Kentucky and is looking forward to playing for coach John Calipari.

The Oklahoma City center signed with Kentucky in November when Billy Gillispie was UK’s coach. When Gillispie was fired, Orton and his father, Larry, asked for a release from the scholarship. However, they decided to wait to see who the new coach would be rather than get the release.

After two weeks of trying to make sure he didn’t want to change his mind about where he would play, the 6-10 Orton told his father Monday night that he was sticking with Kentucky.

“He’s 100 percent now,” Larry Orton said. “I asked him if he was sure this was it and he said it was.”

The Ortons talked to Calipari in New York Saturday before the Jordan Brand Classic. The UK coach also talked to UK signee DeMarcus Cousins then as well as two other high-profile recruits -- point guard John Wall and guard Xavier Henry.

“All along the coaching switch was something we just didn’t know about,” Larry Orton said. “We got to talk to coach Calipari again and it all went well. He told Daniel how much he needed him and I think Daniel appreciated that. All along we just wanted to make sure this was still right for him and he said today he was certain it was right for him.”

Daniel Orton, who is rated the nation’s No. 3 center, had a tumultuous senior season. He needed preseason knee surgery and missed all but the final three games of the year. His mother passed away in January. Then Gillispie was fired.

However, Kentucky fans were the one constant for Daniel Orton.

“I just think the Kentucky fans are what really convinced Daniel this is right for him,” his father said. “That was a large part of what he based his original decision on.
“He believes he will work hard enough to play anywhere. He’s not looking at being a one-and-done or two-and-done player. He’s about winning a national championship for Kentucky. That’s his focus. Not the NBA.” QUOTE from Vaught link

Too, Cat fans, how much do you like reading those words from Daniel's father! :icon_biggrin: We Kentucky fans are going to LOVE Daniel Orton. I honestly have no doubt about that. :icon_biggrin:

I hadn't read this one. It is a more complete article on how Mr. Orton feels and how Daniel does as well.
