CARDS AN EXAMPLE OF VALUE OF TURNAROUND
By Chip Cosby
This much we know about the 2007 Kentucky football team: Assuming a respectable offensive line can be put together, the Wildcats have the weapons to put some serious points on the board this fall.
But we also know this: If the UK defense doesn't make significant strides, Rich Brooks and his squad will have a difficult time equalling or surpassing last year's successes that saw the Cats win eight games and the Music City Bowl.
College programs have been able to field decent teams solely based on a potent offense in the past. Take Kentucky during the Hal Mumme era. Tim Couch and Craig Yeast led a juggernaut offense that was able to offset some subpar defenses that led UK to back-to-back bowls.
Even last year, when UK ranked next-to-last in the nation in total defense, an effective offense helped by takeaways was enough to give Kentucky its most successful season in 22 years.
Now, however, the Cats are thinking bigger and better. They're talking about national rankings and contending for Southeastern Conference titles and BCS bowls.
