I think Kentucky takes the cake when it comes to odd names. I'm always fascinated to hear about other people's kin and what kind of names they have.

A couple of good ones from my family are:

Niner - My Pappaw's sister. She was the ninth of eleven children...guess you start running out of names after eight! :)

JB - Just JB, not James Bernard, not anything, just JB.

Blondella & Rosella - Named after their mother Ella Rae...one's blond-headed, one's red-headed. I swear on a stack of Bibles.

Let's hear yours...I'm sure we've all got 'em!

I work in the schools so I see a ton of stupid names. I've had parents I wanted to hit because they cursed their children with awful names.

Da'Jour

Tequilla

Marijuana

Mignon (middle name...guess the mom was craving steak)

Rheale (I think its pronounced Really)

Jabin

Diaminique (like the generic diamonds they sell on QVC)

Norkis

Cleshay (yes, like cliche)

Charnina

Dominiqutria

Shardanay (yes, like the wine)

Asisika

Jamaciona

Jykajah

Desting

And this is just once school

I have a bunch in my family!! :)

One of my all time favorite Aunt's was : Dimple. No, she had no dimples. Just named that. She was one of the funniest ladies I have ever known. Oh yeah, she LOVED UK b-ball. But would never watch a game - only radio. I would go crazy as a little kid going to visit her b/c she wouldn't have a TV. Oh, the peace and quite I crave now.....

I won't even go into all the nicknames in my family - now, there is some funny stuff!!

What is up with that???

That's like Bill Williams, John Johnson....I mean, you know they're going to have that name forever, why do it??

Another good one I just thought of was: A fella I used to work with was named Dewey Delmer Minton, JR! JR!!!! As if it weren't bad enough the first time!!!!!!

This thread made me think of Wesley Snipes in "To Wong Fu"movie. His "queen" name was Noxema.:ggrin:

I had a great aunt who was born in Kentucky thatwas named Arizona.:shock:They called her Zone. The weird thing with my family is that I hadaunts that had nicknames and didn't know their real names for a very long time. I have an aunt Babe, a great aunt Coonie, and a cousin Doll. Plus, I had an aunt named Alsace after the mountains in Switzerland, I think.

I just hear some names and think some parents have a sense of humor, or the drugs hadn't worn off.;)

BTW, Capcat-Blondella sounds like some sort of Pamela Anderson (please let me show my breasts some more) series.:ggrin:

A funny story about Blondella and Rosella...

I hadn't seen them in years, but went to a family reunion where they were to show up. We're all there having a good time, when all of a sudden, up onver a hill come Blondella and Rosella...I swear the music from "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" started playing. They were adorned in tube tops and terry cloth shorts and a cigarette hanging out the side of their mouths. It was a classic moment in our 'high-brow' family history! :)

Me too! One time, I found out a relative's 'real' name at a funeral. Now, that is sad.

But then again, I have a best friend that I call by 1/2 of his last name. Have since I met him. That causes confusion when I introduce him to someone and then call him by something different - ha!

I used to date a guy whose Mammaw's brother's name was 'Dump'....well, Dump got sick and I had to go to the hospital to pick up the Mammaw and I didn't know his name to get a room number. Imagine the reaction from hospital personnel when I tried to find info on 'Dump'....

My family seems fairly normal compared to all of this. In fact, they seem to suffer from the opposite problem--lack of creativity when it comes to names. I have two Uncle Dons (one is my mom's brother, another is my mom's sister's husband), an Uncle Tom and a cousin Tom, an Uncle Bob (who passed away) and a cousin Bob--plus my dad was Bob, so some of my cousins have two Uncle Dons AND two Uncle Bobs.

It's pretty scary whenwe're calling a 50-year-old man "little Bobby" just so the rest of us know who exactly we're talking about.

My question is "WHY DUMP"??? How 'bout 'Sugar', 'Junior', 'Bub', 'Butch', 'Sis', anything but 'DUMP'!! It's just derogatory, especially to a female.

My boss' name is Wavid. His wife's name is Watha. They have 2 daughters. When I first started working for him, he told me their names were Wiffle and Waffle :) Of course he was just teasing about his daughters, but his and his wife's name are for real. He has a brother named David. To compound things his last name is odd too. I constantly have people calling me wanting the correct spelling!

In my family I have arelative(long gone to the promised land) who had the name of: Mary Etta Rebecca Sutton Della Parreta Clementine Razor Potts. I may have even left a couple of them out! How would you like to have that name.

I work in a public housing agency. I'm sure I could look in some residents' files and find some doozies.

I can answer this!! (I really have no idea why I am even here at 1:30 am!!)
The lady in question "Dump" was my aunt. (by the way there was an uncle nicknamed Butch as well):D Anyway as a young child she was quite short and heavy set. Her father who by the way was a very loving father somehow started calling her Little Dumpy when she was only 2 or 3 years old. Through through the years it came to be shortened to Dump even though she grew to be quite an attractive young lady. She was always short (only around 5'1") but as a young lady still quite nice looking. Unless I am mistaken her husband always used her nickname as well. I asked her about it once and she said given the fact her real name was Notra Dane, Dump was not all that bad. She at least had a good sense of humor about it. All the nicknames must have been a depression era thing. Lots of nicknames in that family as well as with many large country families from that period of time.

Charles = Tebe
Gladys = Dink
Francis = Pat (shortened from Pitty Pat as in little feet running across the floor)
Eugene = Butch
Notra = Dump
And the list goes on. I was close to a teenager before I knew the real names.
None of those were ever considered a source of embarrasement by any of them. But I always did find the nicknames and the reasons quite amusing.

Good night all,

I had a crush on a girl when I was a little kid on Pope Street. Her name was Dinky. I'm pretty sure that was her real name.

My ex-Wifes cousins were named Blue and Sky. Their Mother was a Hawaiian Hippie Flower Child from the 70s.

Kelly (ex-Wife) and her sisters were all named variations of the color green--Kelly, Teal and Sage.

Ok...well like the lady who works in the school system, I spent years working in the social service system...and TRUST ME...KY doesn't have the patent on strange names...how about a few from good ole Bama:

Syphilis (and yes I know what this really spells...but the mother called the unfortunate tyke Si-fi-luh-s first i short second long hard to describe in writing...lol) and the poor child had a twin with another VD name

Gonorrhea ( for this one think of sodom and gomorrah but with an 'N' instead of 'M' in the pronounciation)

Tekeyla (I guess mom had so much of it to drink she didn't even remember how to spell it!!!)

Acura Ontegra (this was first and middle...apparently she also couldn't spell or pronounce what she was going for either...she pronounced the first name A-cure-a)

Then there was the sisters Lexus, Porche, and Mercedes

Chaindrive (not making this up I SWEAR!!!)

Orange America

Spoochie

And the ones that I happened across in court records were often just as amusing: Nova Burns Bright, Peter Horny, and Harry Beaver just to mention a few that stuck out in my mind over the years.

So NO, Kentucky doesn't have ALL the weird names!
