I seen an owl fly up tonight on the power lines outside my house. I seen it fly in and it had a huge wingspan.

That is the first time I can ever remember seeing an owl in this neck of the woods.

I tried to get some pictures, but it was gone before I got back with my camera.

I used to see owls quite often when I worked the midnight shift. It was kind of wild because at night it looks sort of like a shadow when they fly.

I have always loved Owl's. I saw one of these on day back in the mid 70's. I was working for Value City Furniture in Clarksville, IN. I came in for the morning shift and he was sitting there right on the U in Value. I couldn't believe it because I had never seen or heard of a Great Snowy Owl in these parts. He didn't even fly away as I walked under him. Sure looked at me hard though. :)

Edit: I just read on Wikipedia that they have been spotted as far south as Texas and Georgia but Canada is the normal southern limit of range for them.

Owls are very cool and we have some down where we live.

I'll never forget seeing one once and stopping to look.

The owl was facing away from me, but turned his head 180 degrees around to check me out.

Straight from the Exorcist. LOL

Last year I was driving the roadster down our driveway when a shadow passed right over me. It was a low-flying barred owl, which landed on a branch just above me, on one of the oaks on our property. Turns out that tree was his winter home, and when spring came, he moved to another tree down by the creek. He (she) is still around and will likely move back to the oak for the winter.

I was also amazed by the barred owl's wingspan. My wife got some amazing photos of our neighbor, but they are unfortunately not stored on a web server.

Owls are fascinating to me. I heard one this morning around 4:30, somewhere in the trees outside my window. Couldn't pass up the opportunity to make a cup of coffee, sit outside for awhile and just listen to him. We live in the city, but have lots of wildlife. Deer and armadillo also frequently share this property.

One occupies a tree outside my window a couple of nights per month. He must rotate through his territory.

When I was a student at EKU in the early 60's, I lived for a time in one of the old dorms on the quadrangle. An owl nested in a tree just outside, and evidently became a mother, because for several days she terrorized everybody who ventured outdoors. A lot of guys had claw marks on their heads - one guy was clawed in the eye and had to be hospitalized.

The animal control folks eventually got a net on her and moved her and her nest out in the woods, but she fought them to the bitter end.

We live in a rural area and as such, see a lot of wildlife. Most of which, deer, skunks, turkey buzzards, bobcats, hawks, coyote, wild turkey and the occasional red fox, I'd seen/heard before but the Barred owls were a new one and a few years back, their "call" scared the you-know-what out of me the first time I heard it, up-close and loudly! It was dark out and I was outside doing something when they began "chatting" from a large walnut tree directly over my head...it was an amusing sight as I didn't know I could still move so quickly. :icon_lol:

I don't know if it's the proper name or not, but I've always heard them called screech owls. I hunt a lot, and let me assure you, there is nothing quite like hearing one of these critters sound off in the early pitch-black of morning in the woods. Especially if he lets you get right underneath him before he announces his presence.

I have always loved owls. I think they are beautiful and mysterious-probably because they are nocturnal.
I want a set of those candle holders from Hogwarts!

More commonly known as the Barn Owl hereabouts.

I remember some friends and I finding a Barn Owl dead in the woods when I was a kid. Looked as if it had lost a battle with another raptor, such as a large hawk or a Great Horned Owl we'd often happen upon in the same area on many occasions.
