I have one and love it! Great center piece to my Home Entertainment System.
The Blu-Ray drive is incredible watching movies in 1080P. I play mostly sports games like NCAA 2007 Football and 2k7 basketball. I did pick up Resistance Fall of Man, and that was a pretty incredible game. I dont get into the online play that much, I leave that to my computer and World of Warcraft.
Cant wait for the TV tuner add-on due out this Christmas so I can start using it as a HD-DVR.
If your not a one dimensional hard core gamer, this system is a must have.
Now if your looking for some good, wholesome, family, fun oriented gaming you gotta check out the Nintendo Wii. My wife and 4 yr old love it!!!

I own all three next-gen systems. each has it's benefits and drawbacks. i'm not sure what kind of gamer you are so i'll break it down for you.
PS3- Excellent media platform. Blu-ray is most definitely the way to go if your looking to get into HD movies. The PS3 is lacking a little bit in the actual gaming arena. Mainly because there just aren't that many groundbreaking PS3 exclusive titles. Resistance is about the only one worth having. The online experience is several steps behind. Granted, it is free but not all that user friendly. Overall, the PS3 is great for the gamer who isn't concerned with online play and is interested in HD media. The Blu-Ray player is AWESOME!!!!!
360- Hands down the best system for the HARDCORE gamers. The Xbox Live system is so easy to use and adds so much more gameplay than just a singleplayer game. I've spent hours playing online through the night and have often woke up the wife from making so much racket over the headset. Where the 360 is lacking is the lack of built in HD media. Having to pay $200 for an HD DVD drive is still cheaper than purchasing a stand alone player. But, it's not really worth the money when the PS3 can be had for the same price. The 360 really shines with its library of games. I'll just go with the exclusives. Gears of War, Halo 3, BioShock, Forza, and tons of others. If your a hardcore gamer and play online the 360 is definitely the superior system.
Wii- What can I say....This thing is quickly taking over my family room. My wife loves the thing, all the guys that come over want to bowl or golf all night long. It's definitely a niche based system and i couldn't stand it being my only gaming system. But, it's different and is tons of fun.

Thanks for all the great replies. First let me say, I own the Wii and I agree it is great fun! I am looking into the PS3 for sports games basically with blu-ray being an added bonus. From what you all have said sounds like the PS3 would be great for what I am looking for. Any opinion on sports games on PS3 vs. 360?

360 is producing all the new sports titles at 60 fps (frames per second) while only making the PS3 at 30 fps. Simply put, the sports titles run much smoother and look a lot better on 360.

First of all, I have a 55" Sony 1080p SXRD HDTV that's the newest model and the best you can find.
I say that because I am here to tell you that there is NO DIFFERENCE in HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. I am a videophile, I have both the 360 and the PS3 and there is no difference.
That might be of some help to those of you wondering.
Secondly, there is no reason to get a PS3 at the moment unless you just absolutely feel like you have to have one or two of the games out that are actually entertaining that aren't out for the 360. I haven't turned my PS3 on in over a month to actually play a game. I use it as a Blu-Ray player primarily. Games on the 360 are just as good graphically and the XBox Live option is way better than PS3's online system.
Bottom Line:
For now, XBox 360 is WAYYYY better for gamers or videophiles.

Your right! Both formats output at 1080P. But which format will win out at the end. Remember the Beta vs VHS wars?
I'm leaning toward BluRay myself. Just because BluRay is outselling HD-DVD 3-1 right now.

currently EA sports games run at 60 fps on 360 and 30 fps on PS3, but that will change next year when developers at EA have more time to work with the PS3 cell processor. remember the last 2 years of NCAA/Madden ran at 30 fps on the 360, only in year 3 were they able to push it to 60 fps so they're on the same time-table with the PS3.
I have both and play my 360 a lot more, I like the controller better, and most of my close friends are on XB Live.
If sports games are the ONLY thing you'll be playing, I'd lean toward the PS3 only because of the Blue-Ray player, and the fact that Microsoft doesn't have any exclusive sports titles, where as Sony has an NBA title, although it sucks. but all 3rd party sports games will be out on both systems (EA and 2K).

i was seriously doubting blu-ray @ first. but, its just the better format hands down. there is so much more capacity on each disc that they are barely scratching the surface. it's clearly outselling HD-DVD right now and it doesn't look like it's going to end anytime soon.

I don't think we'll know a winner of the Blue-Ray/HD-DVD war for a while because of these factors:
1) upscaling DVD players make DVD's look even better
2) the costs of most DVD's are around $10-$15, cost of BR/HDDVD are around $25-$35.
3) support for each format is constantly changing, Blockbuster has chosen to carry BR discs only, but Paramount has sided with HD-DVD.
in the end, the consumer will decide the winner and when the winner is declared, I think we're still 3-5 years off since most people are happy with the DVD quality and pricing, and the fact that most people don't own an HDTV (yet).
