By his own admission, Brandon Webb was not a child prodigy.
In 1988, while the Dodgers' Orel Hershiser was on his way to setting the Major League record with 59 scoreless innings, Webb was a 9-year-old playing Little League in Ashland, Ky.
"I was probably sitting out there in right field because I was awful, getting my minimum innings that I had to play in a game," said Webb, who is just 18 innings away from snapping Hershiser's streak and starts Wednesday against the Brewers.
Webb got better as he got older, but a big league career sure seemed a long way off.
"I mean, who would have thought that when Brandon played Little League or Tee Ball?" his mother Dreama Webb, said during Spring Training. "He wasn't that outstanding. He was good, but we never thought he'd do this."
The "this" Dreama was referring to was the 2006 National League Cy Young Award that Brandon won after going 16-8 with a 3.10 ERA.
