From UKAA:
Junior defensive tackle Ventrell Jenkins has been cleared to return to practice, Coach Rich Brooks announced following Thursday morning’s practice at the Nutter Training Facility.
Jenkins had shoulder surgery in the spring. Because of the nature of the surgery, a timetable for his return had been uncertain and it was thought he might miss part or all of the 2007 season.
“(Tests) showed significant healing on his surgical repair,” Brooks said. “He’s pain-free. He’s been cleared to test it all the way. We’ll work him in gradually over the next week and see how it goes.”
Jenkins was the team’s top reserve at defensive tackle last season. He played in 12 games, with one start, totaling 19 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and one quarterback sack.
Brooks had updates on other injured players:
-Junior linebacker Braxton Kelley has begun running and might be able to begin individual drills soon. Kelley has been out since the beginning of preseason practice because of a high-ankle sprain.
-Defensive tackle Myron Pryor will miss two-to-three days of practice because of a strained knee.
-Freshman defensive end Greg Meisner had shoulder surgery today and will redshirt the 2007 season.
-Freshman running back Moncell Allen, who has a broken thumb, has returned to practice with a protective cast.
Brooks addressed his team’s kicking situation, saying at this point, junior punter Tim Masthay and sophomore kicker Lones Seiber had retained their starting jobs going into the Eastern Kentucky game. Freshman Ryan Tydlacka has been impressive in practice and is pushing for playing time at both positions.
In one of the most closely contested positions on the team, Brooks said that returning starter Johnny Williams has had a very good fall camp and had gone back ahead of Sam Maxwell at strongside linebacker.
“Nothing is in granite,” Brooks said of starting positions. “Once somebody starts the first game, it doesn’t mean he has ownership of that position. If he doesn’t perform well or if the guy behind him plays better, that could change.”
