Far from ordinary special teams

The last of eight stories examining the UK football team by position

By Chip Cosby

Memo to Kentucky football fans: Get to your seats on time, and don't take too long going to the bathroom or concession stand.

Kickoffs are looked at as rather blase in the grand scheme of things, but they could be a can't-miss with the Wildcats this year.

The Wildcats have boasted a Top 10 kickoff return unit the past two seasons and could be even more dangerous this fall with a new rule that moved kickoffs five yards back to the 30-yard line.

Few teams will have kickers who can consistently boot the ball into or out of the end zone, so there'll be more opportunities for Keenan Burton to get loose.

Burton finished third in the SEC in kickoff returns last season, including a 100-yarder for a touchdown against Louisville. He also had a 93-yard return against Idaho State as a sophomore.

Ryan Tydlacka will be the starting punter by midseason.

Our starting and backup long snappers are both freshman. That worries me some for the punting and field goal kicking.

Jason Dickerson was a true Freshman four years ago and he did an excellent job.

Makes you glad we aren't playing UL the first game. It is things like this that make the game better a little later. They may be better also, but I think the overall level of play is simply hire the 3rd game than the 1st. Lots of UK-UL games have been VERY sloppy and poorly played(especially on UK's side)
