Eastern Kentucky - September 1st
Intern: It's pretty safe to say that even a Bill Curry coached, Antonio O'Ferrell quarterbacked Kentucky team could dispose of the Colonels without much problem. But EKU probably isn't a whole lot worse than UL-Monroe, just ask Eastern alum and starting Dolphins safety Yeremiah Bell. Still, no contest, and it'll only be a great victory if the Cats avoid the devestating injury and Hartline gets a whole quarter of action. It'll be over before you've guzzled the first bourbon drink. UK wins by 40
Rob Gidel: Name to remember is Bobby Washington, former star recruit out of Miami that transferred from NC State to EKU last year. He's not your typical athlete on EKU's squad. Neither is Josh Greco, starting quarterback for Eastern. He's played his best games against top level division 1a programs. As a redshirt freshmen, he threw for 262 yards on 20 of 29 passing, against Vanderbilt. He has digressed though, particularly last year when he threw for more interceptions (13), than touchdowns (10). In the end, the inability for the Colonels to do anything in the passing game will be their greatest detriment. Washington and senior Mark Dunn will make things interesting early, but UK will eventually put the ball in Greco's hands and make him beat them. He doesn't have the skills nor the weapons at receiver to do much. UK wins by 32
Matt Jones: Here is the thing about playing a team like Eastern….you should have them outmuscled at every position….you are more athletic everywhere (especially this year) and you also happen to be more experienced. Add to that the fact that you are finally kicking the season off and it is a recipe for a crazy, sexy blowout. I expect to see a good performance early, a big lead and then some coasting…..with hopefully some experience for guys who need it at positions where depth may be an issue. I love Richmond, Ky and Eastern has that Roy Kidd tradition we love. But UK wins by 28
Kent St - September 8th
Intern: Think Brooks will show the team the Central Michigan and Ohio tapes before this one? Frankly, I'm glad this rivalry got renewed, as Kent will make the Cats sweat for a half and get them prepared for the Cards. Flask half full. UK wins by 28
Rob Gidel: Alot of how this game goes will have to do with Kent State's performance in Ames this upcoming weekend. If the Golden Flashes lay an egg against Iowa State and lose out on an opportunity to knock off its first decent non-conference opponent since Glen Mason was coach, the Wildcats are in for a fight. Kent State doesn't have great skill players, but they have a top notch lock-down corner and a linebacking crew that can compete in the SEC. What they lack is offensive fire power. If UK returns its sorry defense from '06, they won't need a great offense to score and this is Louisiana Monroe, part II. KSU will beat Iowa State this weekend and its trip to Commonwealth will mean a lot less. UK wins by 18
Matt Jones: I am with Rob on this. Watch how Kent St does at Iowa St the week before. If they keep that game close, then this one could be tight. Kent St (whose coach and I have a rivalry going way back) really believes it can win in Ames and give a scare in Lexington…..and they may be correct. The Flashes are not nearly as good at the skill positions, but their big fellas are not that far off from the UK variety. This is a game that truly could sneak up on UK if they arent completely focused. I see a nailbiter through the third quarter and then the Cats get in gear and win by 14
