OPENING AGAINST KENTUCKY DREAM DATE FOR COLONELS
By Rick Bailey
Aaron Jones was two days old when Eastern Kentucky defeated Louisville 45-21 on Nov. 23, 1985.
Growing up, the younger Jones heard about the game from his father Aaron, an All-America defensive tackle for the Colonels and nine-year NFL player.
The victory remains Eastern's signature triumph against a foe from NCAA Division I-A (now known as Football Bowl Subdivision). The Colonels will try again, making a quick trip up Interstate 75 to play Kentucky on Saturday.
"I remember a little but not too much," said Jones, who lived in Richmond three years before his father went to the pros. "Dad told me about beating Louisville and winning games. When I think Kentucky, I think EKU."
Jones, who transferred to Eastern from Florida State last spring, received letters from Kentucky when he was a prep All-American in Orlando, Fla.
"I didn't visit," he said. "I pretty much figured to stay in the state, either at FSU or Miami."
Jones is excited simply to be playing in a college game after sitting out last fall.
"Everybody is excited about the game," he said. "It's a big game to us, and we appreciate the chance. I'm ready to get some game experience."
Allan Holland, a backup quarterback from Hazard, grew up a Wildcats fan and had season tickets with his family until he started looking at colleges during his last year at Perry County Central.
"This game means everything to me," Holland said. "It's a great honor ... growing up in the state and watching UK and Tim Couch. He grew up 17 miles from me and was my idol."
