The timetable for expanding Papa John's Cardinal Stadium remains up in the air. But the facility's title sponsor has given the project a major financial push.

The University of Louisville received a $10 million pledge toward stadium expansion yesterday from Papa John's International, its founder, John Schnatter, and his wife, Annette. It was the largest gift ever bestowed upon the school's athletic department.

"This really puts us well on our way," athletic director Tom Jurich said. "Everybody always knew that a lead gift was going to be the key thing."

Why in the world do we let them sell their pizza in Commonwealth? Take the pledge today to buy ANYTHING but Papa John's Pizza.

The largest single gift ever given to UofL Athletics was given by the guy who invented the crappy pizza known as Papa John's. Its no coincidence that John is slang for toilet...but I've digressed.

"This addition lets the working man and the working women and their families get tickets to this world-class program," Schnatter said. "We've had a lot of fun with this program, so to be able to share it with the average man and average woman gives us a great deal of pleasure."

Oh thank you, thank you, thank you, Papa John for your bountiful heart that will now help all of the "little people" enjoy "little Brother."

Their expansion project was having problems getting off the ground until this happened. So why should we as UK fans support a company who is so heavily invested in our enemy? A portion of every dollar that you spend on their crappy pizza goes to fund the $10mil gift. It doesn't really come from his pocket...it comes from yours.

So think about this guys giant head and why he is smiling the next time you order a pizza.

I don't buy his pizza because I don't like it. He has donated money to UK too, if i'm not mistaken, although obviously not what he gave to UL. I may not like his pizza, but putting his name on the stadium and now this large donation, gives him a ton of advertising whenever they are on tv.

"Lil Brother reference..Schnatter has given very little to UK in relation to uavel..He tries to buy respect but it's not for sale.."

That is simply NOT TRUE. Schnatter has made more than a few size-able donations to UK. Were the donations 10 million dollars, No but they were anything but insignificant.

Great idea, Doc. As noted above the guys has been a major contributor to UK as well.

His donations to the University are a matter of public record. They are in the 6 figures. It secured his ability to sell pizza on OUR campus. Hes no friend of UK.

He also was smart enough to realize like most companies...you donate to BOTH political parties so as to silence guys like me or to keep the wolves away.

To LilBro they are over 20times as much as he gives to UK.

I hate PJ pizza simply because it sucks as a pizza, therefore, I don't buy it.

He donates money to UL because they allow his company to put their name on things. Whenever UL has a national game on TV...which is a hell of a lot more than us, PJ gets the benefit of hearing his company name over and over again by announcers. See how it works.

We don't do that.

We do things like name our stadiums after AD's that fall asleep at the wheel on their watch.

And if he donated 6 figures to UK, then that is a lot more than some do.

It obviously bothers yuou and some of our fans more than Barnhart, Todd and whoever allows him to sell his disgusting pie at the stadium. Why not talk to them. That is where your beef should be. Blame the ones that allow it, if so inclined.

Just my take.

I started my boycott when they underwrote the original little rail yard sweat box. I don't have to change a thing because my boycott still stands. Actually I liked the pizza but I would never eat pizza if I had to give my cash to PJP. They showed their cards (pun intended) and I will play my hand how I wish.

I know for a fact that Schnatter has a dining room table from Italy in his house that cost $500,000.

So his measly donation to secure the ability for his fans to regurgitate the talking-point that "he donates to UK too" simply rings hollow with me. Its simply an insurance policy to help ward off criticism from guys like me.

If the criticism gets loud enough he'll have to dig down and come up with some donation to the UK that will be large enough to blunt criticism.

It won't work for me because I remember the parties that were instrumental in bringing Pitino to LilBro(Schnatter) and I see his $10Mil donation to kick start their stalled stadium expansion.

If he wants to be a fan of LilBro fine...but don't blow smoke up my butt by saying he gives big bucks to UK.

I don't buy Papa John's pizza ever...not because of a personal boycot or anything like that...I think the pizza tastes like cardboard and is horrible. I'd rather have Pizza Hut or Domino's of a Digorno (sp?) frozen pizza if I'm going to get pizza. Pizza at stadiums typically is even worse in my opinion anyway

I think that the hatred for UL has gotten a little too deep. I am not a fan of UL in the least as anyone in the rivalry forum can tell you but boycotting a pizza place because they donate more money to UL than UK is taking it a little far.

I don't think it is the greatest pizza in the world but I think it is sort of silly to boycott over college donations.

As I stated above, Doc your logic is interesting. Let's all throw the guy under the bus, forget his numerous contributions to UK athletic and scholarship funds, (albeit only six figures on multiple on multiple occasions) because you "know for a fact" "that he has a dining room table from Italy in his house that cost $500,000." OK so your former brother in law knows a guy who is dating a "Perkins" mover, who said that a co-worker told him that.......Geeeez, don't throw that "I know for a fact that"................BS. out and not expect anyone to challenge you.
Even if it is true, just a note I am still on waiting your substantiating links on the "stadium expansion was in trouble before" links, but never mind.
What da hell is that supposed to mean. Sorry mods for saying the "H" word. So what? If true, the guy made his money? He can spend it any lawful way he wants. Frankly, I am not an advocate of socialism thought so I don't find independent wealth a disgusting idea. I wish I had 500k to throw away on a dining room table, I don't, but I am not going to trash a guy that does.

Thanks to those that sent me a PM on this topic. No offense, but grow a pair and post those comments in the open forum.

IMO I can see where a boycott is a good idea. Will I do it? More than likely not. I enjoy the pizza and I get it a discounted price, so it is very convienant for me.

I have met John quite a number of times, he brings his son into my work all the time. He's not a bad guy, doesn't really want any special attention or anything done just for him, although my boss gives it to him not matter what.

If you want to boycott Papa John's that's your prerogative.

Same as it's Mr. Papa John's prerogative to donate his money to UofL.

Last time I checked this was still a free country. Barely, maybe. But still free.

I could care less that Papa John's Pizza is sold in Commonwealth Stadium. I personally like the pizza and always have. I can remember when Papa John's hit the mainstream and replaced Little Caesar's as our primary pizza choice out in Middletown. [Talk about nasty pizza- Little Caesar's on Shellbyville Road went downhill fast!]

Anyway, knock yourself out. My kids were in Louisville two summers ago with their Grandparents and met Mr. Papa John at the mall. He gave them both his personal business card that was good for one free pizza- any kind, anywhere. My kids thought it was one of the coolest things ever at the time and really appreciated his gesture. As did I.

Dude can have a house full of $1m dollar coffee tables if he wants. His money. Best I can tell he earned it the hard way. How much of it goes to UofL is none of my business. Won't affect how often this Cat fan buys his pizza.

I tend to be a tad conservative myself so you can spare me the socialism lecture. Please join me some time in the Pol-forum if you wish to discuss and individuals right to make and spend his money as he so chooses.

That said, my statement about his dining room table is true. I don't need to make things up like this.

Actually its a funny story. I hired a furniture repair company, really just a man and his son, to do some work for me. He had just worked on the Schnatters table. It is a very special Italian wood and there was a flaw, a crack in the veneer. The manufacturer flew a repair technician in from Italy to repair it. The Italian guy proceeded to nearly ruin the table, gave up and flew back to Italy with his tail between his legs. Schnatter looked all around the country to find a craftsman who could fix his table....and found this guy just over the bridge in Southern Indiana. He had the table in his shop for the repair. He told me that his insurance coverage for contents did not even come close to covering it if something happened to his shop. Anyway, the story is true although boring as heck. I suppose that its possible that the owner of the furntiure repair company could have lied to me...but since I got his name from a contractor who was doing construction on Schnatters $40-mil home....oops there I go again.

Lector's point about the half million dollar table was not about class envy.

Lector's point was if PJP can afford such luxury, a six figure donation to UK was akin to putting a penny in a tin cup and then bragging to the world. Don't make PJP a hero because of a six figure donation, to PJP six figures is not didly squat; that was Lector's point.

No the point of boycotting a pizza place because of the owner giving more money to our rival.

That point is so stupid! If you don't like his pizza fine don't eat it. I don't like pizza hut I don't eat it. Not because Mr.Hut gives money to UL or UT. You boycott things because they harm the environment or they are doing some grave injustice to some people. Not because the owner donates more money to another team.

The company that sponsors our jerseys (NIKE) puts thousands of little kids to work in sweat shops every single day for long hours and almost no pay. Are you talking about boycotting them? No and I'm not either but I am using it as an example. That is a grave injustice to a society not a how dare you give money to another team.

Thank goodness Evergreen Liquors is alive and well (and larger than it used to be). We also had some luck buying from that old drive in liquor store up the road, but usually we had to run downtown to Family Circle.

I've been a longtime boycotter of Pappy John's, and it's not been hard. Their pizza is terrible in addition to supporting UaVel athletics. Here in Kingsport, if you really want pizza, you'll order from/go to Italian Village, Motz's or Raffaele's. As far as pizza goes, you CAN NOT beat a Chicago-style deep dish. I've never been to where you're talking about, but there was a place (can't recall the name) in Hoover, AL, just down the road from our apartment that had THE BEST Chicago-style pizza in town.

Don't they sell beer in Lexington in the afternoon? I was in between classes and had 66 tons to unload after that. They start selling beer at 7 am except on Sunday, when it's 1pm (complete pain I think) and only in restaurants.

The pizza at Pazzo's is pretty good, but the beer is fantastic. About 30 premium beers on tap. After the game the place is packed. It's on S. Limestone north of Kennedy's. The Spaten Lager is in the basement, so for quicker service, try to sit down there.

Thanks for the tip guys. I am glad that premium beers are taking over everwhere...and 30 on tap! That is awesome. I just cannot drink the pizz water in an aluminum can anymore...sorry Bud, Miller and Coors...since I've "grown" into the premium beers out there and the micro brews that are soooo good anymore.

I have never eaten Pappa John's Pizza, not even one bite. I see no reason to start now.

...Because there is a Papa John's about two minutes from my house, which is very convenient, and if I'm ordering out for pizza, then I'm doing so for the sake of convenience. If there was another pizza place equally convenient, then I would patronize it simply because of the UofL thing. However, my life is complicated enough as it is, so I don't need to inject sports politics into my fast food choices.

On the subject, I was just thinking: how many of you purposely patronize Krogers, Miller Ford, McAlpins, Purnell sausage, etc. because they are major sponsors of UK athletics (note their commercials during UK broadcasts). Most people on this long thread have strongly said they won't patronize Papa Johns because of the UofL connection. If so, then the same logic would extend to patronizing businesses that do have a strong UK connection. Are you a "buy UK only" purist?

is that they sell it at Commonwealth Stadium and they cook it right below our seats. That stuff reallllllllllllllllly stinks when they are baking it. I hate the smell. Football games should be for hot dogs and peanuts, not stinking pizza.

Apples – Oranges

If Papa Johns Pizza only advertised on their radio broadcast or was a sponsor then we wouldn’t be having this thread.

I have no problem with a local corporation finding naming rights to a stadium to be an attractive advertising option. John “Papa” Schnatter, however, has leapt beyond simple “advertiser” to being an ADVOCATE for UofL sports. He has allowed his corporation to become a vehicle to funnel millions of dollars to UofL athletics.

Whether by use of his airplane to fly Pitino back to Louisville or kick-starting their stadium expansion with this $10-Million gift, not to mention the prior millions that got his name on the stadium in the first place…..if its good for LilBro its BAD for UK. If enough UK fans boycott their admittedly crappy product then maybe they will think twice, three times, or more etc…. before giving them more money. Or, as I stated earlier they will be FORCED to blunt public opinion by digging deep and throwing some money our way.

So IMHO it is a viable tactic for us, as fans of UK, to strike back at one of LilBros cash cows.

If you want a good pizza..go to Wicks or Bearnos............Jockamo's on Goss Ave has excellent pizza

Wicks is very good. I like Clifton's, also, when I am in Louisville.
