I came across this site and thought it was fun and interesting: an online list of power rankings for college football, going waaaaaay back.

Like any such measure it is open to debate, but still fun to peruse.

Some fun ones from it:

1984
18 West Virginia Eastern Independent
19 Florida State Southern Independent
20 Kentucky SEC
21 Tennessee SEC
22 Miami (Florida) Southern Independent
23 Arkansas SWC
24 Iowa Big Ten
25 Air Force WAC
26 Georgia SEC
27 Texas SWC
28 Notre Dame Eastern Independent
29 UCLA Pac 10
30 Clemson ACC

4 Penn State
5 Arkansas
6 Kentucky
7 Pittsburgh

(How can these power rankings, or the final 1977 AP poll, rank Penn State ahead of Kentucky, when Kentucky went on the road to Penn State and won?)

Wow. What a fascinating site.

And what a powerhouse Centre used to be. C 6 H 0 baby! :icon_mrgreen:

There's a great scene in The Praying Colonels where the running back from Somerset (can't remember his name, but I do remember that he was in the Job Corps and they recruited him pretty literally off the street) got hurt, and they rushed out on the field and poured whiskey on the wound. He went right back in the next play. :icon_mrgreen:
